Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 12 Week 15: Vietnamese vs Vikings

Dial V for... Vietnamese and Vikings... yeahhh idk where I was going with that...

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Chinese vs Malay, and next up is the Vietnamese vs Vikings!

    Vietnamese: Archer civilization

    • Enemy Town Center location revealed at start
    • Economic upgrades do not cost wood
    • Archery Range units +20% hp
    • Conscription free
    • TEAM BONUS: Imperial Skirmisher available at Archery Range
    • Unique Unit: Rattan Archer (Powerful foot archer with massive pierce armor)
    • Unique Unit: Imperial Skirmisher (Imperial Age Skirmisher upgrade)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Chatras (Battle Elephants +50 hp)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Paper Money (Each team member receives 500g)

    Vikings: Infantry and Naval civilization

    • Warships cost -15/15/20% in Feudal/Castle/Imperial Age
    • Infantry gain +10/15/20% hp in Feudal/Castle/Imperial Age
    • Wheelbarrow, Hand Cart free
    • TEAM BONUS: Docks cost -15%
    • Unique Unit: Berserk (Powerful infantry that slowly regenerates hp)
    • Unique Unit: Longboat (Nimble galley-like warship that fires multiple arrows per volley)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Chieftains (Infantry gain +5 attack vs cavalry)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Berserkergang (Berserks regenerate hp faster)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Interesting match up here! For 1v1 on open maps, Vikings are always popular due to their exceptional economy, which can lead to deadly timing attacks. And yes, Viking eco is better than Vietnamese eco. However, is the Viking eco so much better that it overcomes the sizable advantages Vietnamese have when it comes to better archers, cavalry, and access to bombard cannons?
    • On closed maps, this feels like a straightforward advantage to Vietnamese. Vikings can always make an early Imperial Age timing deadly, but Vietnamese just have far better military options, critically including access to bombard cannons. Can Vikings make their classic timing work consistently here, or will Vietnamese just hang on and smash Vikings with imperial skirmishers, rattans, and bombards?
    • As flank in a TG (or as an archer civ in a 2v2), both civs here are very strong, but not quite at the level of Mayans and Britons. When looking at their flank archer play, we see pretty much the same dynamics here as in other game modes: Vikings have a better eco, and Vietnamese have a better army. How important is one over the other when it comes to team play?

Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Celts vs Indians. Hope to see you there! :)

After seeing some tier tier lists being being posted here and binge watching Ornlu`s campaign videos I decided to post my campaign tier lists. (Hard difficulty plus achievements)

After finishing all of them I can say :

    My favs :

Jadwiga : A very fun and challenging campaign. The set piece battles were all awesome and It has some of my favorite scenarios ( Siege of Vilnius, Vytautas`s Crusade and The Fruits of Her Labor )

Kotyan Khan : Best atmosphere in a campaign, does the fight for survival much better than Montezuma in my opinion and boasts a fun and yet challenging campaign.

Tamerlane : You just get a full on power boner, destroying everyone and everything.

    Worst :

Tariq : It`s very grindy and the most infuriating thing is that It could have been soo much better. Berbers are such a mobile and cav heavy civ, If there were mechanics like Sforza 5 where you would have to raid the countryside in order to defeat these big and heavily defended cities it would make the campaign so much more palatable, plus easier because the one sword difficulty does not fit scenarios like Razzia.

    Anyone else having lobby issues?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 07:24 AM PDT

So the lobby issues seemed pretty ok but since the update last night I can't get past the "Creating party" wheel of death, it just times out and says "AdvertisementJoinEvent" and doesn't allow me to join a game. Anyone else?

EDIT: Didn't mean update, just meant server maintenance.

how on earth are the mulitplayer services not working proberly for 1 month (also was disgusting before)? i unterstand if there are bugs in the game due to the old 1995 game engine, but the lobby browser? again? come on microsoft, you are not a small indie company, you can do it better... give the people the change to play and enjoy your game :(

Chinese +3 villager start. How good is it really?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 05:40 AM PDT

I was wondering how many villagers you're actually ahead with the chinese start considering you have to do loom instantly and that there is some idle time.

You *do* have loom while your opponents don't and they still have to get it but I personally only seem to be barely 1 vil ahead of my opponents.

Bonus points if you can translate this to resources in dark/feudal age 11

    Feature idea: flat terrain toggle

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 07:41 AM PDT

Would it be technically possible to make a toggle button that would make the terrain flat, but only visually? This would really help tremendously when building on hills.

Basically, make all tiles "Elevation 1" visually, like in the scenario editor.

Villagers dropping deer food to Dock

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 12:44 PM PDT

So, I was playing nomad yesterday and I built a dock. Near it were some deer, so I sent a villager to get food from it... but it didn't drop the food on the dock (logically.. or illogically, whatever).

Anyway, then I got into creative mode. With the full 45 food (I think?) from deer, I sent the villager to get fish, then immediately clicked on the dock to drop the food, and it worked!!

Did you know about it? Is it common knowledge?

    Hoang knockoff chills

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 06:59 AM PDT

Anyone else get a gold chill go down their spine randomly when ladder fighting? Had a queue where I wanted to play trashintines, but switched at the last second to franks with no real reason aside from a cold chill.

I dont know how else to beat them aside from axemen. I fail when trying to compete with brute force 9/10 times.
