To the toxic ~1000 Elo Frank pickers

    Posted: 27 Sep 2021 12:02 AM PDT

You beat me fair and square and I was fine with it. I was about to give you the gg wp and resign, but if you're gonna be rude and keep spamming 11, "noob," and "trash" in chat, then you can hunt for my last villager and break through three layers of fortified wall getting to him. We're the same Elo, my guy. I'm gonna go make a sandwich.

    Customising your UI

    Customising your UI

You can actually move around the positions of the interface in your game. I personally like everything at the bottom, since you can get a faster overview of minimap, production queue, and recources.

    https://preview.redd.it/h77qgb8a61q71.png?width=1926&format=png&auto=webp&s=35f6ce06cb57a9273db98b999890b9cbceeea8a7

This is how you do it.

Locate your AOE folder (in steam, rightclick on game and browse folder) - go to

    https://preview.redd.it/chgoes9k61q71.png?width=601&format=png&auto=webp&s=961cc2cc1e325145e8ce7fb2111ee764e878f44b

Inside "widgetui", you'll have a lot of different things you dont want to change.

If you're really clumsy or have never coded before, quickly make backups of these files. (if you've screwed up, deleting them will probably cause defaults to be created - cant confirm though)

You can open any of these files in Notepad, or any other code editing software

    https://preview.redd.it/3j9u9eeh71q71.png?width=478&format=png&auto=webp&s=e44ea165a3cc1a84a24d0c0098dae2a226a92aac

You can have AOE open while you change these around. After you Save the file, the game will instantly update the position. If nothing moves, you did something wrong.

    Technologyprogresspanel.json - production queue

    mappanel.json -minimap

    Scorepanel.json - ingame score

    recourcepanel.json - recources

I havent found a way to move the Control groups screen, thats why the minimap is offset a bit.

    What makes Liereyy so good?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2021 04:28 AM PDT

This is a genuine question because I'm not that good at AoE2 and would like to learn more about its top players. What makes Liereyy so good?

From my noob POV, TheViper is good at the following: multitasking, strategies (7/10 11), decision making, map awareness, macro and micro. He can hold aggression like few others and is active all over the map.

For Liereyy, aside from the obvious, I find it much harder to tell: Of course his micro, unit control and aggression are amazing. And clearly his strategy, macro etc. must be decent as well, otherwise he wouldn't be top3. But is it possible to be more specific? Because in terms of strategy I get the (maybe wrong) impression that his gameplay is usually like this:

    - be aggressive in feudal, gain an advantage with usually archer/skirm, sometimes scouts, via aggression and superior micro

    - and/or an aggressive push in castle age with siege and usually crossbows (plus/or sometimes knights, monks etc.)

Is there more to his strengths? Thanks!

    Another civ concept: The Swabians

    Posted: 27 Sep 2021 05:37 AM PDT

Just for fun, don't take this too seriuosly. Of course the game doesn't need this civ - but I need it. :-)

Coming from the region in southern Germany which is famous for the world's most beautiful dialect, I don't feel represented well enough by the Teutons. After splitting the Burgundians from the Franks and the Sicilians from the Italians, why not add the Swabians? And after fighting at Tannenberg as Jogaila and Jan Žižka, wouldn't Ulrich von Jungingen's perspective be the next logical step?

According to the clichés, the Swabians are known as Tüftler (inventors) and Häuslesbauer (house builders), but also for being stingy and keeping their money together. So I took the challenge to turn these clichés into a concept for a playable civ which adds some new bonuses without being OP. The strengths of the civ are buildings, advanced technology, and using their gold efficiently. A nice defensive fast-castle civ with a good monk rush for Arena clowns like me.

    Civ Bonuses:

    • Houses and Palisades built 80% faster
    • Can construct buildings of the next age (except fortifications) while aging up
    • Technologies (including age advances) cost -25% gold
    • Gold miners generate additional food (similar to Polish stone miners generating gold)

    Unique Techs:

    • Kehrwoche: Damaged buildings regenerate
    • Peasants' War: Boosts attack and HP of all trash units in the field (one-time use)

    Unique Unit:

Inspired by a well-known poem by Ludwig Uhland, this is a unit which just wants to go its way in peace, but can get really aggressive when being attacked.

    • Swabian Crusader: Cavalry. High HP, but slow movement and attack rate. Special ability: Returns 40% of melee damage to the attacker (e. g. a unit which deals 10 damage also takes 4 damage at the same time).

    Team Bonus:

    • Can upgrade palisades to Fortified Palisades by researching Fortified Wall

    Tech Tree:

    • All eco upgrades available
    • Missing Paladin, Siege Onager, one or two archer techs, Heresy, some dock techs, all non-European units

And, of course, the most important thing: their in-game dialogue, for example:

    Select:

    • Ha no!
    • Dô be-n-e.
    • Wa witt?

    Move:

    • Dô nom.
    • So isch nô au wieder.

    Attack:

    • He macha!
    • Emmr feschde druff!
    • Aogschbitzt en Boda nei!

    Select Monk:

    • Griß Gott.

    Move King:

    • No ned hudla.
    • No nix Narrets.

    Construct Building:

    • Schaffa, schaffe, Heisle baua.

Red Bull Wololo in Age of Empires II: the results of the series

I made a diagram of an AoE2 match's decision making (not necessarily exhaustive)

    Posted: 27 Sep 2021 05:59 AM PDT

Obuchs need a nerf for one obvious reason: they have no (generic) hard counter

    Posted: 26 Sep 2021 05:31 PM PDT

The fact that obuchs dominate every non-unique melee unit while receiving +4 pierce armor in castle age is nonsensical, cuz it breaks with the game's rock-paper-scissors format. Of course you can take out an obuch army with good xbow micro, but right now there's no viable way to kill them if they're under a castle or TC.

This doesn't matter much on Arabia, but it makes the Poles totally broken on arena. Few (if any) civs can outboom them, and it's literally impossible to push them in CA cuz obuchs. They just need 1 or 2 castles and their defenses become impenetrable.

Are there any videos about the development of aoe2 meta over the years?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2021 11:40 AM PDT

As someone who hasn't followed the scene for all of its existence, I'd be very interested. What I know about the subject I have gathered from bits of information occasionally dropped by casters and top players. Also, I have seen one Nili cast of a really old Daut game.

Things I'd like to know: Who were/are the biggest innovators? Who introduced the tactics used today? When was the development particularly fast? How has the meta changed during DE time and who are the biggest contributors? How much has technical limitations affected the meta and how fast did it change once the limitations were overcome?

Obviously this is a large topic and can't be completely covered in one video, so I'd be happy with something that goes through the big picture. I'm mostly interested in 1v1 Arabia.

Or if someone wants to write even a small essay here, I'll upvote. Though it might be best to make it its own post.

Cicero’s interactive build guides & other build guides

    Posted: 27 Sep 2021 08:51 AM PDT

Are Cicero's build guides competitive ? Should I learn them or should I learn other build guides that are more competitive?

Also what build guides would you suggest for a new Briton player? I can beat extreme AI with a simple 21 archer rush build by Hera, are builds like that good against humans ?

    Team Games?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2021 08:50 AM PDT

My 1v1 elo is 1000-1100, my team is 1400 now, down from 1450. I had only played teams with my friends who's terrible, first time playing teams again (without him) after the rank changes and man did I struggle. I did 4v4, 3v3 2v2 and I felt like I was playing someone a few hundred higher then me. I check their elo and it was nothing crazy, 900-1200 (obviously around the same team elo) do people just not play 1v1 very much and increase their skill in team games?

What a picture. Just finished watching the whole tournament and I’m so impressed by everything, despite the hiccups. Loved the hosting, the production, the memes, *that* MBL Hera series and I felt chills watching the intro on the first day.

Is there any mod generating a sound when an upgrade/age is clicked ?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2021 08:40 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

Question in the title, thanks for helping !

background story : I think all of us once in his AoE life had to face the situation where you are sure you clicked the age, but in fact you "didn't"

I was convinced that everytime this happened, it was my fault (miss clicked), but few minutes ago, I paused my mind, clicked on the button when it was clear (not red), and the game did not save the input (I suppose it is somewhat related to lag)

Obviously, this was my best window to close the game as I was ahead and was going to clear his army thanks to my arbalester. But you all know the rest of the story ... ;)

    Civ win rates by Elo

    Posted: 26 Sep 2021 01:46 PM PDT

    Civ win rates by Elo

I thought it'd be interesting to take civ win rates (like on aoestats.io) and bucket by Elo rating. It seems notable that beginners do well with civs like Vikings and Bulgarians that are bottom barrel for experts, and vice versa for civs like Burmese or Indians. Does this seem accurate?

This is using the Kaggle data here (https://www.kaggle.com/jerkeeler/age-of-empires-ii-de-match-data).

EDIT: Made some recommended changes to color scheme and Elo categories. Thoughts?
