An Age of Mythology Feature that ALL Age of Empires games could benefit from

Took this screenshot from a Boit cast - you can bring it up in-game!

Age games, especially Age of Empires 2, are notorious for how much hidden information they have. From the multitude of attack bonuses to several different speed modifiers (frame delay, reload speed, etc.) to the variety of armor classes. Dedicated players always end up just consulting an external wiki site to get all that information. But as you can see above, Age of Mythology incorporated support for an in-game Details screen, which you can easily bring up anytime. Even the one in Age of Mythology doesn't show everything, but there's plenty of space in it to do so. So maybe AoE 2 could have one too?

Plus you can see at the bottom a space for a history section, which has always been a big part of Age games. AoE 2 also emphasizes history a lot, but only via a separate history section found in the main menu screen, as well as of course the story told by the campaigns (which are oft quite romanticized). I think this would pair well with those - sure you won't spend time reading it while in a competitive match, but you could always pause the game during a campaign scenario to indulge your curiosity.

What Campaigns are worth playing? And wich ones should you avoid?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2021 06:56 AM PDT

So, after being rather underwhelmed by some of the campaigns I have tried, I just finished the Dawn of the dukes Campaigns which I really enjoyed. Are there other campaigns that are on the same level? And what are some campaigns that are generally not worth playing?

Is it okay for players to climb ELO during a lower level tournament?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2021 08:05 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I recently joined a lower level tournament with a cap of 1400 ELO. During the sign up and at the start of the tournament I was 1320 ELO.

One of the rules was that you could not have a max of 1450 ELO before or after the tournament. The tournament lasts between 1-2 months, playing one set a week.

I questioned this rule, and the Admin then said that it was okay to keep playing 1v1 RM. So, I kept practicing on the 1v1 RM ladder. I had noticed that several other players were already above 1450 ELO before the tournament even started.

Perhaps I should have just practiced on an alternate account, which another player openly admitted to doing anyway to avoid this rule.

By the time I had reached the semi finals, I had climbed to 1485 ELO. It was at that time the Admin decided to ban me from the tournament.

So basically a few questions. Was the decision to ban me really fair? Is it reasonable to expect nobody to practice or improve during a tournament? Lastly, what tournaments are open now?

    Thanks,

Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 12 Week 18: Burgundians vs Mayans

    Posted: 21 Sep 2021 09:08 PM PDT

Which is/was more fun to play against - Flemish Revolution or Obsidian Arrows? 11

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Italians vs Malians, and next up is the Burgundians vs Mayans!

    Burgundians: Cavalry civilization

    • Economic upgrades cost -50% food; available one Age earlier
    • Stable techs cost -50%; Cavalier upgrade available in Castle Age
    • Gunpowder units +25% attack
    • TEAM BONUS: Relics generate food as well as gold
    • Unique Unit: Coustillier (Medium cavalry with a powerful charge attack on a long cooldown)
    • Unique Unit: Flemish Militia (Heavy infantry with bonus damage vs cavalry)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Burgundian Vineyards (Farmers slowly generate gold)food->gold effect is being removed in the next patch
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Flemish Revolution (Ornlu does not like this tech)

    Mayans: Archer civilization

    • Start with +1 Villager, but -50f
    • Resources last +15% longer
    • Archers cost -10/20/30% in Feudal/Castle/Imperial Age
    • TEAM BONUS: Walls cost -50%
    • Unique Unit: Plumed Archer (Fast, tanky foot archer)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Hul'che Javelineers (Skrimishers throw an additional projectile)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: El Dorado (Eagle Warriors gain +40 hp)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Okay, so we've got some pretty powerful civs here! For 1v1 Arabia, Mayans have been at least near the top of the pack for the past 20 years. Having a strong early eco, a cheap and flexible military, and two good power units with the Eagle Warrior and Plumed Archer will do that for ya. However, Burgundians can be very dangerous if they are able to get to their mass cavalry. Does their midgame cavalier and cheap Paladin tech make up for missing Bloodlines in this case?
    • On closed maps, Mayans used to be all the rage when it was Castle drop Plumes into a quick Imperial, but that style has very much fallen out of fashion. When it comes to the current meta of booming into an early Imperial Age timing, Burgundians are a far more natural fit. That said, Mayans can still hit very scary timings with lots of archers, and Burgundians still do miss Bloodlines and Siege Onagers. How do you see this one going on your BFs, Arenas, and Hideouts?
    • In team games, Mayans have been a top tier flank pick since ye olde days, but one could argue the current meta favors them even more than back in AoC. Mayans are very comfortable going for high numbers of archery ranges on low numbers of TCs, and that is generally what we see from most high level players these days. That said, Burgundians are the cool new kid on the block when it comes to pocket civs, with their strong eco and cavalry play. How do these civs compare to one another when it comes to team games?

Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will begin Round 13 with the Britons vs Sicilians. Also, this is where I am introducing the Bohemians and Poles into the RNG pool for the discussions. Hope to see you there! :)

What were the best and most entertaining games/series from RBW5 in your opinion?

Thoughts after RBW5 and Empire Wars Duo.

    Posted: 21 Sep 2021 05:19 PM PDT

I'm curious how others feel after this last month of competitive AOE for what's coming next. It seems RBW5 will be tough to beat in grandeur.

I love seeing the elevated play, and it seems that while Viper is still in the top, I don't know that we have clear #1. Viper, lierry, Hera, Mr. Yo all seem to be in that top tier where they could win a tourney and no one would be surprised.

I am a little concerned that the top is being held mostly by GL and AM though. Maybe it's just because Yo and ACCM couldn't make RBW5?

Does anyone else feel that concern that we might be looking at a stable of two teams elevating faster than the rest?

Feels like Villese is keeping up, and so is Dogao, but there are some names I have gotten used to seeing it the last 3 or 4 years that seem to be dropping off faster than newer players are stepping up.

I guess I'm just curious what others observe and think about. I love seeing the top being contested, but I'm a little worried the gap from the top 4 is getting bigger and might become too big?

    Finally hit 1000 ELO!

    Posted: 21 Sep 2021 04:21 PM PDT

I got the game in late may I made a post about 2 months ago about finally hitting a positive winrate and I can now say I've finally hit my goal of 1000 ELO. Super excited! This last game at 996 was so damn stressful. Now to never touch the game again so I don't have to pull my hair out when it goes back down 11.

I usually play Lithuanians or sometimes Huns and my biggest hurdle was always just learning to deal with Halb spam I've finally somewhat got the hang of it. It still stresses me out a bit but I am getting better. Think the last few weeks has been a huge evolution in my game. Here's my Aoe2.net profile if anyone wants to check it out. Youll see a huge spike from just the last three weeks and that's purely from throwing in some swordsman with my rushes or skirms.

How do I continue improving at the game while still fighting AI? Have I peaked?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2021 05:06 AM PDT

Started playing recently, I've certainly improved quite a lot. (Thanks SOTL and T90) Using key binds, playing to my CIV's strengths. Entry level micro, abandoned arbitrary "house strats", don't care how pretty my base is, understand counters and high priority targets. However I'm at the stage were moderate bots are much too easy but hard bots are just too hard. I typically play with friends across a variety of maps and we took to using the CD AI as the one just labeled "AI" surrenders WAY too easy, plus this one (to it's detriment at times) builds walls and very rarely towers. To my understanding the HD bots literally cheat in terms of resources so I've basically ruled out fighting that. Maybe a 1v1 against a hard bot is an idea as it's a bit rough to do with a team of human players versing an AI set to the nearest skill level of the best player. To those who may not know in AoE2 all AI in a match must have the same difficulty, so unfortunately unable to put varied AI types against me at once to spice it up like other games. Though I have tried putting the DE AI on a team with the CD AI infront of it to mix up the difficulty.

I know I should just take the plunge and try fighting a person, I'm well aware that there's only so good you can get against bots. It's past a certain point you're developping an entirely different skillset, and certainly with any amount of time against an AI it can become incredibly easy to meta game.

Oh, also I really suck at naval stuff. I've effectively mastered the build order of a regular map but throw boats in and outside of investing into more wood eco I just fall off in that regard. That said, the bots are particularly ruthless with naval combat.

Okay maybe not learned today but definitely felt the point proven to me in this friendly 1v1.

First clip where streamer casually walks through my house walls

Second clip same match where I casually walk through his house walls

Third clip where I do it again after he tried to patch it up with another house.

Final clip where it was the final straw after he tried to patch it up with palisades

Team meta on low gold maps?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2021 05:25 AM PDT

I play a bit of 2v2 Megarandom with my wife. Last night we got a nomad start on a map sort of like acropolis but which had scarce resources, every gold had just 2 tiles. Didn't think much of it or scout that well, I planned on archers into Xbows, she planned on scouts into knights, like almost every other 2v2. Enemies went spears and skirm in feudal, I got totally mopped up by skirms at their base and mine, ended up in castle age with no gold, no map presence, desperately trying to mine a second gold to afford the xbow upgrade, but by the time I got it I had 3 archers and they camped skirms outside my ranges.

So... Obviously that was a bad strategy. In retrospect my guess is that I should have started mixing in skirmishers way earlier, maybe even gone like 80% skirmishers?

But in general, on maps like that with low gold and stone before trade, how do feudal and castle age typically go? What's the best 2v2 composition to start taking control of the scarce golds and trade routes?

    Beginner tips

    Posted: 21 Sep 2021 03:05 PM PDT

Hi all! So I've finally decided to start playing ranked games in AoE2DE. I've played since the original, but I only really ever played with friends or against AI in the past. I've done the Art of War missions, and I'm fairly comfortable with the dark age and feudal. I've decided to main the Mayans, because I like Eagles and they seem pretty well-rounded in general.

I've played 3 games so far (won 1 and lost 2) but in all of them, I've been pretty passive early on, and I've had trouble being scout rushed. Any tips on how to defend against this? I know rushing and harassing is important but not sure how to do it properly!

From 800 elo and climbing up

    Posted: 21 Sep 2021 04:21 PM PDT

So I started playing in AOE in July at 800ish elo and now I am at around 1169. Is it considered a good progress? I really enjoy the game as much as I used to enjoy chess. I felt like getting passed 900-1000 was even harder than passing the 1000-1100 range. Is that true for other players? How hard is it to reach 1200 or 1300? What efforts should I be making? I feel like I still barely make walls and most of my opponents are good at walling and small walling.
