Age of Empires II Glorified view of the past , ranked lobbies.

Glorified view of the past , ranked lobbies.

    Posted: 07 Oct 2021 03:01 AM PDT

I'm not sure if some players have a glorified view of the past when they wish for a ranked lobby system back. But one of the main reasons I stopped playing Age a few years ago was the lobby system. It took forever (especially for new players) to get into a game. If you didn't decide to play against the same people again (which I don't think makes sense in ranked), it took forever again. Especially for TG, there were sometimes endless discussions about settings.

I am certainly a player that benefits from the DE system, since I enjoy playing 80% of the maps. But I think that for a really meaningful Elo, only a mixed rating makes sense. Otherwise there is also the question where the line is drawn, Arena ranked, BF ranked, 25 pop only-feudal michi ranked?

I don't think ranked lobbies are up to date anymore. I still play lobbies regularly as I also enjoy CBA and other more unusual modes. In addition, I also play in Tg lobbies that are organised via Discord. But for just 4-5 games in an evening, the current system is much better suited.

I am by no means saying that the current system is perfect. And I still want some features; not having to invite players over and over again; more ingame interaction for those who do want to organize lobby games; etc. But what I certainly don't want are ranked lobbies.

Where is the wonder on the map?

FYI: Its called "Random Map" - because the Map generation is Random, and not because you get a Random Map when you Queue Ranked matchmaking

FYI: Its called "Random Map" - because the Map generation is Random, and not because you get a Random Map when you Queue Ranked matchmaking

For 20 Years this game existed, and it was always undoubtedly called "Random Map" generated from a "Random Map Script" (RMS). In fact, we never had a Matchmaking System, we had Ranked Lobbies. There was no such thing as Matchmaking. And it is called "Random Map" to make it indistinguishable from Scenarios/campaigns, as well as DeathMatch (DM) and now Empire Wars (EW) or Battle Royale (BR). So, Even if the Ranked would be called something with "Random Map", it has nothing to do with the map selection, but very likely how the maps are generated.

If you asked anyone that played this game longer than 2 years, everyone would confirm that it is due to that, besides in a Lobby you can also select "Random Map" (next to DM, BR) - and it doesnt give you a Random Map from Arabia to Yucatan

So please don't make comments like this and try to shift the meaning of "Random Map" to make it an argument against Alt+f4er - because butterflies are also not flies covered in butter.

    Muh Mega Random

    Posted: 07 Oct 2021 07:09 AM PDT

Just started getting back into AoE and didn't realize there was a rotating map pool. That's cool and all but the lack of mega random as a staple (the way that arena + Arabia are) seems like an oversight.

I'd be fine with mega random variations (eg no water mega random this time around, holy cup style always start w a monastery mega random next time around, etc) to add "variety". But it's such a unique map system and one that I really enjoy (AoEs great joy for me has always been exploring the map and dynamically adapting to what I see, not memorizing build orders) and with it gone I'm a lot less interested in continuing to play right now.

Anyone else feel this way? Or am I minority and consensus is it's a fun occasional map but not one to play regularly?

    Beginner Questions

    Posted: 07 Oct 2021 07:12 AM PDT

Hello guys I have started playing AoE2 DE like a week ago and I've been watching it for like 3 months from T90 and various pros, but mostly T90. So I know how the game works but, I don't know at the same time. I have some beginner questions and Im pretty sure some of them have answers online somewhere but Im not sure if they are still relevant because of the new Arabia map update and the game is evolving so I wanted to ask you guys. And in my opinion it is good to list all the questions at the same place in case another beginner like me has to look for them and find this post. Here are the questions:

    1. How are ranked map pools are chosen? Are they voted by the community? How often they change? You can ban 3 maps but can you prioritise a map?
    2. Some pros aren't using auto farm, why is that?
    3. Does all 1v1 maps have the same amount of animals equally for each player? Does all 1v1 maps have same amount of animals? (2 Boars, 4 Deer, 4 starting sheep + (2+2)extra sheep for each player, as far as I know)
    4. Same question above but for the mines and woodlines. (I would be so happy if someone answered this with how many exact gold, stone and woodline each player get on the map.)
    5. Why is the game 1.7 speed, I can understand 1.0 speed may be slower for everyone so they made it 1.7 but why do they still display it as 1.7 since it is the default speed at this point no one is playing 1.0?
    6. How does animal aggro work? If someone lames a boar and I catch them If I attack the boar will it turn on me or If I attack a boar with my scout when do I lose the aggro?
    7. Is every kind of food income at same speed but people prefer fish and animals to farms and fish traps because the traps and farms require resources to make but animals are free? (I ask this because someone told me you collect food faster from animals and fish then farms and traps)
    8. How does hill advantage work? Does the damage increase when you are even higher or is it stable if you are higher than the enemy thats all it matters?
    9. At the earlier ages before the Balistics technology I think, Im not sure the archery range units miss some shots, they are not aimbot. If the shots they miss land on a different unit and not the ones that they attacked would it still damage that enemy like a mangonel shot for example? (Same question for towers, castles and TCs)

    Thank you for reading.

An unintended consequence of the Long Swordsman buff...

    Posted: 07 Oct 2021 05:47 AM PDT

Some campaign missions just got a lot harder! I am currently trying to beat everything on the hard difficulty; some it makes no difference (you just start with fewer resources) but others it increases the numbers of enemy units. When you have no choice but to fight LS with what you have (some light cavalry or similar) suddenly everything gets a bit trickier.

MAA into LS viability Vs cav civs

    Posted: 07 Oct 2021 04:21 AM PDT

Combination of what I've been doing and a question. At my elo (~1300) it's very common to face 2 or 3 stable KT rushes.

And I've been wondering what the best build using MAA into LS could be.?

Picking for example Burmese who save a load of food on LC upgrades, have amazing monks for converting the inevitable siege, and having some boss level attack on their Infantry.

In feudal ive been pressuring with MAA, spears and twr, going Black Smith and market as the age up buildings.

Burmese LS beat knigths 18:10 with about 10 LS left (meaning they snow ball very quick) . You can already train 8 MAA on the way to castle age, and then easily continue to train LS out of 1 rax in castle age

The main thing I was wondering is if it's actually best to harvest gold and buy food at the market until you have enough farms to sustain multiple rax.?

And at what point would buying food become too expensive?

I'm fairly happy doing this gold abuse with Saracens but wondering if it's viable to rush food for LS?

Are Burmese potentially a better LS civ than Japanese due to the eco (saving food) and better support from monks?

Ethiopians seem a surprisingly viable civ for this as well since they can easily suppliment with pikes and get an eco boost that directly contributes (food and gold)

Some people want unlimited bans in ranked, I believe they are underestimating the impact that would have on matchmaking and queue times

    Posted: 06 Oct 2021 01:04 PM PDT

AoE 2 ranked already has 8 matchmaking queues:

    - 1v1 Random Map

    - 2v2 Random Map

    - 3v3 Random Map

    - 4v4 Random Map

    - 1v1 Empire Wars

    - 2v2 Empire Wars

    - 3v3 Empire Wars

    - 4v4 Empire Wars

Fortunately people can and do queue up for multiple of these options at once, however there is nothing forcing that to be the case.

Adding unlimited map bans would multiply these 8 queues by the number of maps in the pool (7 for 1v1, 9 for teams). That is now 68 different queues for matchmaking. Yes, some people would still queue for multiple options, but surely you can see how having 68 queues creates a potential problem for matchmaking with the size of our playerbase.

Adding more queues pretty much invariably leads to longer queue times and/or a decrease in matchmaking quality.

Some queues or combinations of queues would of course be much faster than others, but ALL would have less players available than what we have right now.

EDIT (Adding since I think people also don't realize this):

The unlimited ban system would mean that anyone who bans any maps at all would have less available players to match with. The only way you could keep the same amount of available players and queue times we have currently would be to ban ZERO maps.

Anyone else kinda sad that hunting dogs has been removed from the game?

Simple math on why infinite map bans is not a good suggestion, and why the current matchmaking system actually gives players more control over which maps they play on

    Posted: 06 Oct 2021 04:33 PM PDT

Firstly, the argument for infinite map bans is to "allow people to play the maps they want". I will use basic math to prove why it wont work.

Let's say 50 people around the world are queuing for Ranked RM right now.

Let's say of those 50 people,

    • 40% of those players are in the 1v1 queue,
    • which makes 20 people

Let's say of those 20 people,

    • 40% of those can be matched in similar regions,
    • which makes 8 players

Let's say of those 8 players,

    • 1 of those has an ELO within 50 of yourself

    Current system

You get matched with that player, and the matchmaking pools together the maps that have not been banned and chooses one.

    Infinite ban system

    Scenario 1

    • Player A has all maps banned except Arabia, because he wants to play Arabia
    • Player B has all maps banned except Islands, because he wants to play Islands
    • These players do not get matched against each other, and they both don't get to play a game

    Scenario 1a

    • Player A decides to open his map pool, because he doesn't want to wait that long despite not wanting to play on a few of the maps. Still bans Islands
    • Players still don't get in a game

    Scenario 2

    • One player decides to open his map pool completely, because he doesn't want to wait long to get into a game
    • One player has all maps banned except Islands
    • Map: Islands

    Conclusion

The current system allows for both players to get matched in a reasonable time against each other, and gives both players a level of control over which maps they want to play on.

The infinite bans system ether gives 1 player complete control over which maps are played on, or they never get to play a game.

Therefore the argument for the infinite map bans to "allow people to play the map they want", is really just "let me play the map that only I want to play" - which is not really fair.

Please stop making new posts about infinite bans.

    It's not a good idea.

    Thanks,

    Posted: 07 Oct 2021 08:10 AM PDT

The dude is my favourite player to watch on t90 streams the only player (except LEL obviously) who's games are interesting to watch.

The dude has beaten the likes of viper and hera several times, has defeated hera in RBW5 and then in GL doesn't even gets a qualification due to a french No Namer? The dude has been said to be top 5 by several others and still man.

    This is sad.

    Why no one uses Kamandran?

    Posted: 07 Oct 2021 03:30 AM PDT

I recently tried Persians with a ball of trebs, Paladins and trash xbows and it really seemed op. 25 vils on wood easily handled constant spam of xbows from 10 ranges. The paladins took out seige and skirms, trebs cleared out castles, I don't understand why Persian civ isn't seen much at higher levels, especially when their trash xbows seem op. But then again, I'm a lel so I might be missing on something which others notice?

    Pushing deer is hard

    Posted: 06 Oct 2021 12:52 PM PDT

Today, I was trying to get a deer through a gate in a wooden fence for the first time and it was an absolute nightmare. I had the gate open, went all the way round the deer, and slowly started pushing it in.

It was all going well but at the last minute, it freaks out and runs off in a completely different direction and I have to start all over. The second time, exactly the same thing happens - the deer goes right up to the gate but at the last minute runs off instead of going through.

I'd like to report success on the third attempt, but I had to give up at that point. I'd wasted ten minutes and was clearly not skilled enough. On top of that I was sweaty, muddy, and my family were getting hungry. Anyway, that's the story of my walk earlier, off to play AoE2 now.
