Just found that's a pretty hilarious way of describing the way these patches use to (not) work.

(Just forgot to turn on my mods btw, after a 30 second queue too, not that you think of mine as one of the evil map dodgers. We do agree at this point that these guys are the bad guys, right?)

    I really don't like turtle maps..(team random)

    Posted: 08 Oct 2021 02:03 AM PDT

Arena, Black forest for example.. Obviously there are alternatives. But i'm still a 900-1000 ELO braindead idiot. I do so much better when you have to mix feudal micro/macro(trust me i suck, not a brag). Turtle games.. I get castle dropped trying to boom. Or I build an army and can't get to them before they are able to build a counter; having built the first army It's tough to counter the counter in time.. I guess It's build orders that win these games?

Really wouldn't be as upset, but people are very toxic. Makes it difficult to just suck it up and move on.. Got ripped a new one, insulted ect. my last game for getting castle dropped.. I had a few units but I suck and was about 75% into castle myself, no stone.. I actually had my scout patrolling and caught the castle in the process - but he sent 20 or so vils to do it. So they molested my scout.. Meanwhile my pocket players continue booming and flaming. Spamming flare all over my base(iBelieve it or not it makes the whole thing harder!) and encouraging words like"BuIlD a cAsTle!!, NOOB!, KILL YOURSELF". I probably could have snuck out a few vils and tried to rebuild. But that shit takes the wind right out of my sails..

Should Samurai and Woad Raiders get some love?

Should Samurai and Woad Raiders get some love?

Hi all! With the latest militia-line buff, I see that some infantry Unique Units' usage could be still more reduced in the gameplay. The biggest advantage of infantry UUs over Longswordsmen was that, once you built the castle you didn't need three (or two if you opened M@a)food and gold consuming techs (Supplies, M@a upgrade, Longswordsman upgrade), just to create an usually situational unit in Castle Age. With the cost reduction of Supplies and LS upgrade (you save 125F 25Gcompared to the patch before), plus the easier massing of LS at Barracks, plus the +1 melee armor they got, the only and small advantage of Unique Units like the Samurai or the Woad Raider is becoming tiny. These two units have also a very situational usage later in game, and Champions can replace them easily, noting that the civ bonuses both for Japanese and Celts apply to them. I'll talk about them a bit:

    Japanese Samurai and Champions

In the Table below I show the difference between Castle Age Militia-line and UU. The cost of upgrades and massing is also included:

    https://preview.redd.it/h7hdxfhb38s71.png?width=489&format=png&auto=webp&s=147b97ccb1008be094077557753111ccda69b055

For most of maps, the m@a opening for Japanese is the way to go, thus the m@a upgrade will usually be already researched by Castle Age. Supplies could be researched on the way to Castle Age, and the LS upgrade would be the first with the Blacksmith armors. Samurai would be locked behind a Castle, which also needs stone mining, which weakens the economy. Of course, the Castle will pay for itself by strengthening a defensive or offensive position.

When it comes to resource consuming, the limit in Castle Age for an even investment is between 15 and 20 units. For fewer units, Samurai cost less (+650 stone for the Castle). We could say that a Castle produces units at the same rate than two Barracks (and I don't think that, even committing to LS, you're going to build more than 2 Barracks so early – The only civs that would do that are mesos, with their strong early eco for Eagle spam).

And then it comes the real usage of both units. Let's start with Castle Age. It is becoming more popular the Siege Tower wall hop in Arena, which would be good for Japanese. But you want to do it as early as possible, and massing Samurai will always be slower than LS. If you Castle drop and open a hole on enemy wall (this can apply to any map), Samurai will fare better thanks to their higher speed. If you want to snipe siege (a ram attacking your Castle), Samurai will be spammed more quickly than LS. If you want to counter Eagle spam, LS have a higher bonus attack, but Samurai will chase them better. Last but not least, Samurai has a great attack bonus against UUs. Which UUs could be seen in Castle Age? The most likely are (we can discuss this, BTW) Conquistadors, Konniks, War Wagons, Plumed Archers, Huskarls, Mangudai, Janissaries, Arambai, Rattan Archers, Kipchaks, Serjeants and Hussite Wagons. The rest, to me, would be situational in Castle Age, and not very used against Japanese. From all these, the only ones that don't outrun Samurai are Serjeants, Jannisaries and Hussite Wagons. The last two are Gunpowder units, which fare very well against infantry in general. Samurai would need to cover the gap to be able to attack them. Serjeants are slower, but, if you see them in Castle Age, it's likely that they will be protected by Donjons. If Serjeants were spammed from First Crusade for a push, Samurai would indeed be very valuable to counter the strat. Regarding the rest of the UUs, there are two more melee units (Konniks and Huskarls). Samurai would counter them very well.

In Imperial Age, the list of units counterable by Samurai is higher (I still find it weak against ranged units and slower than most of them. Most of the civs would go for other units), but upgrading and massing Samurai will be more gold intensive, especially due to the upgrade and +10 gold cost of each unit, and would even become more food intensive after like 30 units. With similar stats and Champions being easier to mass, the use of Samurai becomes very limited.

    Celt Woad Raiders and Champions

I'll show you the same table for Celts:

    https://preview.redd.it/mpcv2tsf38s71.png?width=515&format=png&auto=webp&s=778d27c3888c3aeec862ef31d7b3210ae0a33040

Celts' opening could also be m@a, although we must never forget the Hoanging potential (in this case, nothing in this post will matter). WRs are still more food consuming than Samurai, but in Castle Age you save 100 food from Squires, thus leaving again the balance of food between 15 and 20 units. An advantage for WRs is that they are much less gold demanding. All I said before about Castle drops is applicable to Celts for this comparison, with the big difference that, while Japanese fare better when engaged in combat, Celt infantry is better at chasing units, fleeing and forcing combats.

Woad Raiders are, after all, raiders. Unprotected vills will be their favorite prey. They are faster than all military units except for Cavalry Archers (and similar UUs), Steppe Lancers, the Scout line, some Cavalry UUs, Elite Eagle Warriors with Squires, and the rest of Cavalry units (Knight-line, Boyars, Cataphracts, Tarkans…) need to get Husbandry (or be Cuman) to outrun WRs. They lack melee armor, so any melee Cavalry (and infantry if not properly microed) will be cost effective against them. Even lacking a high value of the pierce armor, they can cover the gap with foot archers and kill them quickly, although you need numbers to take that fight effectively. Their best usage could be killing Eagles, because, as opposed to the Samurai, they chase Eagles and kill them easily. In Imperial Age you have again a costly upgrade that will leave resource consumption above the Champions'. Their usage will be similar, with a mobility that only Eagles, Cavalry and Cavalry archers can achieve.

What I mean to say with all these data and facts is that these 2 units have a very niche use. Samurai can be paired with Skirmishers against Archers and with Halberdiers against Cavalry, but, if not fighting against UUs, their usage is far from common. That role could be easily for Champions. Woad Raiders belong to a civ that, to me, is one of the most difficult to play with, and there are too many units that can chase them or hit them badly due to their nearly inexistent armor. Apart from that, if you need to fight, Champions will fare better in melee combat.

Both units have 1 pierce armor (max 5). FU Skirmishers need 40 shots to kill them, while Arbalesters (16 shots), HCA (14 shots), Heavy Scorpions (7 shots) or Hand Cannoneers (4 shots) are very effective against them.

Should their pierce armor (for Elite versions) be increased to 2? Would it be broken for WRs because of their speed? In that case, should upgrade and unit costs be lowered for these units? I await your ideas and comments evaluating these thoughts. Have a nice weekend!

A tip for everyone whose mods are disabled after an update and have to spend a few minutes enabling them.

    Posted: 08 Oct 2021 12:34 AM PDT

    Go here:

    C:\Users<username>\Games\Age of Empires 2 DE<steam64id>\mods

Find a file called: mod-status.json. Make a copy of it after your modes are enabled, in the right order, etc.

Next time there's an update, quit the game, go to that folder and replace the newly changed file with your backup copy. Now restart the game.

The game might crash if any mod is unsupported. But you knew that already.
