    Cuman revival?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2021 06:16 AM PDT

Anyone else seeing Cumans a lot more often since History Hit Open where Viper played them quite successfully? I also noticed a few casters/players commenting on them, saying that they're currently a lot better than they are perceived by many of the players.

Are Cumans finally back? What do you think?

What should I know before playing Team games online?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2021 02:21 AM PDT

Hi! I've never played a Team game online (only some occasional 1v1 last year) and wanted to try. It seems like team games are relatively stressless, but I'm still don't want to spoil the fun for my teammates for not knowing something important. So any advice is welcome :)

So how do you guys play team games?

    Camel Archers or Cav Archers?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2021 08:05 AM PDT

I was in a 1v1 random civ Arabia game (~1150 elo) the other day where I got Berbers and my opponent got Mayans. I don't normally use Berbers and am not very familiar with their strengths/weaknesses other than that they are a Cav civ (honestly I thought they were cav/elephant before the game started and I checked the tech tree). So I'm no expert... Anyway, in mid Castle Age, my opponent was producing a lot of Plumed Archers and Pikes and I was doing mostly Genitours and a few cav.

I had a castle on his flank and I wanted to pressure his main woodline which was housewalled. In the heat of the moment for some reason I saw Camel Archers and thought "Oh right, these counter other Archers, and can kite away from Pikes, perfect!" I later realized that made no sense and they only counter other Cav Archers, but by that point I had produced ~20 Elite Camel Archers out of both castles and had been raiding eco and harassing Pikes with them.

I ended up winning the game, but am still not sure if I did the right thing in making Camel Archers, or if I would have been better setting up a few Ranges and going Cav Archer. I know Berbers aren't a good CA civ overall, that's not my question.

My question is just - are Berber Camel Archers broadly better than Berber Cav Archers against non-CA units? Their stats are really similar, but Camel Archers seem to be better in every way except for lacking the bonus against Pikes. Am I missing anything?

    Aftermath map 1v1 RM

    Posted: 22 Oct 2021 01:25 AM PDT

A heads up for those that haven't come across this map on ranked 1v1 RM - as I hadn't ever played it before...

    • You start with TC, broken stone walls (that you can't re-wall the gaps), 6 houses, no woodline in the base, a rax and a smithy, berries, gold and stone all close to the TC. There are also 2 trade workshops that generate 24 resources/min.

    • I was Bulgarians vs Goths. I did a 21 pop 3 MAA opening. Next thing I know, Goth decides to make 15 MAA, add a second rax (got one free, remember) and 3 archers and hit me in Feudal...

    • It's not far off Empire Wars... I honestly didn't stand a chance as it was my first time playing the map. Caught me completely off guard.

Honestly, is it so difficult just to get some standard RM maps in the ranked 1v1 map pool? We got coastal forest (?) for a few hours on Wednesday before the maintenance - that's now gone.

I certainly don't know the approach for this map, you can forget any sort of standard RM meta.

    Replays gone?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2021 09:01 AM PDT

Hi - I was hoping to review a replay from a game i played sometime in September, but in my replays they only date back to October 1st. Are replays from games older than Oct 1 gone forever? :(

    Thanks

Franks build order not targeting foraging?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2021 08:01 AM PDT

Is there a reason when I look at Franks build order they still start with sheep/boar when foraging is 15% faster? I feel like I'm missing something here...

EDIT - two great answers - I've got it sorted now

100% record with malay on arena

    Posted: 21 Oct 2021 10:09 AM PDT

Since the viper keeps saying malay is the best arena civ I decided to give it a go. I've lost every single game I've played with them. So what army should I go for? And what are the best strategies?

Bulgarians vs Teutons late game match up

    Posted: 22 Oct 2021 02:34 AM PDT

Recently played as the Bulgarians vs Teutons and the game went to late imp. What do you think of the match up in general and what are the best chances for Bulgarians to take the win? What are the possible viable late game army comps for Bulgarians?

In my match the Teuton player went for fully upgraded Paladin and Halbs + Trebs. While I went for a mix of FU two handed swordsman, Halbs, Hussars and trebs. It was a stalemate until I ran out of gold and couldn't stop the Paladin spam anymore. It was RM aftermath and there was a lot of gold on the map, the opponent had more map control. Looking forward to your insight!

Any psychology majors here? Why are 1v1s so much more stressful than team games ?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2021 01:08 PM PDT

I've noticed that I get so much more stressed and worked up during 1v1 games than I do team games. Does anyone know what causes this ? Like I know the obvious answer is "because you only have yourself to blame" but I just can't help but feel like there's more to it than that. Like I don't feel like I've ever been that critical of myself during 1v1s and I am equally aware of all the mistakes I make in team games. If anything I would have thought that you should feel more stressed in team games because your mistakes also impact other people as well not just yourself.

So yer was wondering if anyone really knows / understands what makes 1v1s so much more stressful than team games.

    How do I get better?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2021 04:00 AM PDT

So here's my situation : I play celts/incas/italians mostly, with celts being my current main civ. It's also the one I had the best results with so far. Just as a sidenote, I'm stuck on Voobly since my potatonPC can't run DE. I donplay the new 1.6 Patch, so DE balace is active. Anyways, my goal for now is beating the Hard AI. But for god sake I'm not succesful at it. My current strategy is Drush into FC and Knights, than transition into siage, altough I never get to that point. Usually, even if I get one or two vil-kills, he usually reaches feudal by the time my militia are out, and they're finished by archers or m@a. After that, I get rushed, and even if I get to castle eventually, I already lost my powerspike and my units are outnumbered. I'm already using most hotkeys too. So how do I improve? Yes obviously practice, but I've been doing this for two weeks, and failing. So what other than that?

Bulgarian strategy against strong archer and pikes civ

    Posted: 22 Oct 2021 08:47 AM PDT

Ok so I am gonna be more specific to a scenario and a general strategy I use but feel short against some civs such as Ethiopian or Mongol. My elo is between 1100-1200 up and down and my goal is to get a decent win before they go Imp and get abr

My strategy: 20 pop MAA opening, transition to scouts to knights. If they pressure me in fuedal I make one range skirms and try to get both fletching and armor upgrades. Then starting castle I do two things: make two stable knights and try to get all armor upgrade before engaging in fights and send a villager to build a forward siege workshop.

Problem here: if I was against an archer civ who mass crossbow mostly I feel more comfortable dealing with them once I have all upgrades. But if it was against an archer civ who mass crossbow AND pikemen, such as Ethiopian, I often had to retreat to near my siege workshop and get scorpions and mangonel ASAP. But usually at this point neither scorpions nor mangonel is effective as their numbers and speed are too low against the already larger number of pikes and crossbow so they just end up jump onto my siege and eventually I had to retreat to my base and discard that siege workshop.

So what would be a better strategy here? Should I be adding more pressure to get more skirms to clear their archers as much as possible?

Or should I stick with my default strategy but have a better control? But play more defensively? Try to get more stone starting mid-fuedal and get kreposts as many as possible and focus on massing konnik and try to hit them back after getting stirrup?
