Totally demoralizing losses that sap your will to play

    Posted: 14 Oct 2021 09:58 PM PDT

What type of losses make you so dejected that you don't want to play for the rest of the day or even longer?

I had one today that felt incredibly frustrating. I'm quite weak playing against knights, especially Franks. I probably lose two thirds of my matches against them.

I should say that my RM elo hovers around 1100 and my EW elo around 1000.

Today, I played an EW match against Magyars. So immediately I know what to expect. It's usually scouts into knights, which means me flailing around my base chasing scouts unsuccessfully in feudal and getting up to castle not much faster than my opponent with an eco already heavily out of whack. But I actually got my walls down this time and kept him out of my base for most of feudal. He made a good skirm switch in late feudal and ended up breaking in anyway doing some eco damage, but nothing game ending. Despite the skirm switch, he still made it up quicker than I did by maybe 40 or 50 seconds. I probably produced a few too many spearmen.

To keep this from being too long, basically I played pikemen mangonel in early castle into 2 TC pike/eagle against his knight skirm scorp composition. Incredibly, he didn't get into my base during castle. I almost always die like that vs cavalry civs - chasing knights around my base, not plugging wall holes, falling behind in eco and resigning when they get up to imp. But I kept him out this game, chased him away from my base multiple times and took some good trades in the midfield. I played better than I usually do against mass knights, at least I thought I did. But when I started to push into his base late in castle, he almost immediately hit imp. I couldn't believe it. I had to resign. He had at least 3 TCs going while I was on 2 and not even close to clicking up.

In retrospect, I didn't macro well behind the castle age fights in the middle against his knights and siege. I had too many pikemen chasing knights and while I got some good trades, he did well at keeping his numbers up. I was too focused on the middle play, didn't drop enough farms and didn't get my eco rolling in general. I have to say, for my elo, I think my opponent played very well. But I thought that I had played much better than I normally do against mass knights, so when I saw him get up to imp like that and be in such a better position than myself despite all the knights he had made in castle age, I couldn't stand to play another game.

So yeah, does anyone else have certain types of losses that take away all your motivation to keep playing? What are they?

Age of Empires Monopoly Board Game

    Posted: 14 Oct 2021 08:33 PM PDT

Thinking of mocking up a AoE2 monopoly just for fun.

I'm thinking having all "properties" be different buildings, so going up from cheap dark age buildings (outpost, mill) to expensive buildings (ending up at castle/wonder) as like the "boardwalk" equivalents.

What would you do if you were tasked with something like this? What would the railroads/jail/free parking be?

Fun to come up with these kind of ideas so I'd love to hear any thoughts.

    Vietnamese in 1v1?

    Posted: 15 Oct 2021 05:56 AM PDT

So i've recently come back to aoe2 de and have been enjoying the Vietnamese (when I was a kid all I played was the Goths) and was wondering how they are in ranked 1v1's.

I've never played ranked in any aoe before and am really keen to get into it, so was just looking for people's opinions on the Vietnamese in this setting.

    Thanks

    Late-Feudal Tier-List (Civ-Strength through the Ages, Part 3)

    Posted: 15 Oct 2021 05:31 AM PDT

    Late-Feudal Tier-List (Civ-Strength through the Ages, Part 3)

How strong are the Civs through the ages?

    Part 1: Approach

Part 2: Dark Age & Early Feudal

    Today we continue with the...

    Late Feudal Age

Late Feudal: Power of Archers, Power of mixed compositions and mass Scouts, Eco throughout Feudal and age-up times

    Late Feudal Age Tier-List

    • D-Tier: Arguably the period were infantry is by far the weakest, due to the dominance of ranged units, this is also the biggest struggle period for the Goth. You can add cheap Spearmen which makes them less vulnerable to mass Scouts, but other than that they lack anything to compete with the various bonuses of other Civs. Spanish have pretty much nothing here except that they can rush a tower for defense quicker + their Archers don't scale.
    • C-Tier: Mongols struggle in their eco after they burn through the food early on and don't get any bonus anymore then; still they can start everything a bit earlier than normal civs. Persians spend some extra food on their villagers which won't pay off yet and have also no bonus, but: holding here or forcing the opponent into a prolonged Feudal gives them extra villagers, therefore they have a passive advantage at least + they can up a bit quicker. Berbers still no bonus except for their Vils; advantage for them is that they want to go into Cavalry and ranged units long-term, so it is okay if they spend some ressources into upgrades; still wondering if they should be moved to D-Tier. Franks don't get bloodlines and don't want to waste ressources for ranged units. At least decent eco and Scouts that are better than vanilla. Magyars have the cheaper Scouts which are good for a full Feudal play, but I think that doesn't happen often enough to make up for their lack of eco and (because of that) difficult Archer transition.
    • B-Tier: Now it's getting complicated, the situations of all the Civs start to get a bit wild with many advantages and disadvantes mixed. First of all, here are most of the rather generic Archer-Civs: Italians, Koreans, Japanese, Byzantines, Bohemians (and Incas up to that point; changed them from A-Tier). They all have some minor bonuses to help them in the Archer-war, but not enough for A-Tier. Then there are some Scout-Civs that start to have a good eco now: Slavs, Indians, Poles, Teutons. Lithuanians can control late Feudal with the faster Skirms quite well, but lack any economical bonus in the long run. Tatars and Aztecs have a smooth eco going into their Archer transition and going up from that, nothing special but they're flexible and decent. Bulgarians have the option of going for a lot of upgrades and a super strong army but due to their bad economy, that is not too strong of a strat.
    • A-Tier: Some Civs that just have a really good eco here, so they have a good Archer transition, can add some Scouts too and that without risking the necessary uptime. Malians, Celts and Huns are super smooth here because they can afford buildings (and then farms) more easily. Burgundians, Malay and Vikings eco will start to kick in. Saracens can boost their eco here with the Market which gives them many options + they can kill buildings with their Archers. Cumans can go into multiple production buildings earlier and/or have a villager advantage here already which makes it super tricky to play against them. Britons and Portuguese just have an easier time to mass archers, Portuguese also save a lot of ressources while doing that and Britons are quicker in adding Skirms if needed. Vietnamese have stronger Archers and decent eco behind it. Turks and Sicilians become really interesting here because of their military bonuses. Turks allow you to play full Scouts against Archers which will be also instantly upgraded in Castle Age and can raid better; very dangerous option. Sicilians will just win every fight once you have enough numbers to force an opponent into counter-units; basically, the opponent can't build Spears or Skirms which are both crucial in many late Feudal Age situations; could be S-Tier if they just had economy.
    • S-Tier: Chinese eco starts to kick in like crazy now when you survived until here and then the upgrades are also cheaper + they can scale both main lines into Castle Age AND afford both at the same time which is really strong. Ethiopians simply have the strongest Feudal Age unit in faster firing Archers; once you massed them, you just have an amazing army available. Mayans may be seen as A-Tier only, lacking Scouts or any military advantage, but the mix of cheap archers and their good eco is super convenient to play and forcing the opponent into Skirms is great for them because they have the Eagle option behind that; they just come out with an advantage here so easily.

    A little bonus again: A until-clicking-up tier-list.

Mechanics/ Hotkey Tutorial Series by Pros?

    Posted: 15 Oct 2021 01:32 AM PDT

I feel a huge aspect of becoming a better player in any RTS is getting your basic mechanics right.

Is there any series that teaches that?

Like which hotkeys to press to:

-Do the start (2house, villagers queue sheep) - quickwall -place lots of farms at once -micro archers -jump around screens

Those things that dramatically speed up what you can do in AoE2

    2 v 2 Strategy Question

    Posted: 14 Oct 2021 01:50 PM PDT

Hi everyone, me and a friend have been playing a lot of 2 v 2s and we settled on a strategy of both going feudal aggression on the person across us, then teaming up on a player in early/mid castle age to try and knock them out.

In this strategy do you think it's more effective to double team the person who was hit harder in feudal to finish them of completely, or is it better to double team the stronger player while their teammate would struggle to help because of their earlier setbacks?

    The Appropriate Turkish UU?

    Posted: 15 Oct 2021 06:34 AM PDT

The Turks in the AoE2 timeline are also based on Seljuk Turks, not just the Ottoman Empire.

Because of this, wouldn't it make more sense to have a alternative UU, like a cavalry archer (name is Sipahi) for Turks rather than janissary? The janissary could just be a second UU only available in the imperial age, in the form of an upgrade to hand cannoneer. (Gunpowder units in Bapheus and Manzikert seems….off)

Regarding the castle age UT, what if it's called "Beyliks", and the bonus effect still remains as it is.

A lot of people seemed to had the problem but it was a few months ago:

How did the system managed to get us matched with these people???

How did the system managed to get us matched with these people???

This is not a complain or a rant. It's rather a WTF moment.
I'm about 1200 elo 1v1. 1660 TG. My mates don't even play 1v1 and are of a lower TG elo than me.

Yet we get matched with these people

Red was 1976 1v1 elo, purple was 2144 and yellow don't play 1v1. The queue time was around 40 secs, even faster than my standard waiting time. I don't know how this happened lol.
