Why is the timer not real seconds/minutes?

As the question above. I find it wierd having made up seconds.

What's wrong with the game today!?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2021 04:05 AM PDT

I've played two ranked games this morning and in both of them myself and several other's in 4v4 games started rapidly losing our buildings as they were randomly deleted, the first game on arena it took about 15 minutes to start happening and the next it happened with two minutes. Obviously I had to resign both times but then the results had no bearing on my ELO 🤔

Is anyone else experiencing these issues today? Does anyone have any idea what's going on ?

    Historical changes I would make

    Posted: 26 Oct 2021 04:14 AM PDT

While I love AoE2, there are a few historical-based changes here and there I would make to give some of the civs a bit more life and accuracy. Now, most of these are smaller-scale and don't involve things that have never happened (like changing civ names) as things like that open a can of worms. So this is just adding units, or changing architecture. Anyway, this is mostly for fun, and me getting some brainstorming onto paper.

Indians - Give access to Battle Elephants
India is well known for its elephants, and it seems odd that this civ only uses them as chonky cavalry archers.

Mongols & Huns - Create new architecture set based on the yurt design
The Hun architecture makes very little sense, and the Mongol one only works in the context of the Yuan Dynasty.

Vikings - Create new architecture set for them based on their Wonder design
The Central-European set only sorta works during the Feudal age, then it looks very out of place. It's even more egregious when they build their Wonder.

Sicilians - Give access to the camel-line
A big deal was made over them being a cultural mix, yet that wasn't very evident in their tech tree. Also Sicilians used to raise horses with camels to get them used to the smell, so they clearly had access to them.

Turks - Give access to the Steppe Lancer
Seems odd that a (even partially) steppe nomad civ does not have access to this unit.

Huns - Give access to the Steppe Lancer
Similar reason to the previous point. Probably a horrific idea balance-wise haha.

Huns - Remove Atheism tech and replace with...anything else
The Huns were not an atheist people. Plus the tech is really weird.

Saracens - Change the Mameluke to a horse-type cavalry unit
It's not even the right kind of camel. Seriously, this thing is just bizarre.

Persians - Change to Central-Asian architecture
Been covered multiple times as to why.

Persians - Add a unique further stage for the Cavalry Archer line with more defense
Parthians and Persians were well-known for cavalry archers, but isn't reflected in-game with any bonuses or even fully-upgraded Cavalry Archers. An upgrade with a lot of armour would reflect their cavalry archers better.

Lastly; Turks, Malians, Persians, Saracens, Berbers, Indians, Tatars all use the Imam skin for their monks. And Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Mongols, Vietnamese, Malay, Khmer, Burmese use the East-Asian Monk skin.
Different skins for Monks are possible (Mesoamericans), and these two are already in-game. Seems like a waste to not use them.

What does everyone think of the seeding for the first AOE4 tournament?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2021 08:56 PM PDT

I was just looking at the details for the event, and saw how the seeding is going to be done for the Genesis Tournament:

    **

There will be 64 seeds and the order will look something like this (not exact - some of the numbers and order may change!):

1-#10 - The AOE IV ranked ladder

11-20 - Recent record among AOE II pro players

21-#23 - Recent record among AOE III pro players

24-#32 - Recent record among non-AOE RTS players

33-#46 - Recent record among AOE II pro players (second batch)

47-#54 - The AOE IV ranked ladder (second batch)

55-#60 - Recent record among AOEO and AOM pro players

60-#64 - AOE II//III Personalities (must be playing at highest level)

    **

Interesting to see that Aoe2 pros get the highest priority from outside games. Also funny to see there are a few spots reserved for casters. I wonder if T90 will get one of the spots?

    Arbalests vs HCA in late-game?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2021 07:47 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I've been playing the Japanese more and more these days, and I'm starting to love them, be it on water or open/closed maps. But since I know I'm pretty bad at this game and I want to improve (pretty sure I'm a LEL even though I've never played ranked) I'm trying to diversify my armies more and more instead of just spamming post-Imp Champions and Samurai with Trebs.

I've realized that Japanese have FU Arbalests as well as FU Heavy Cavalry Archers, and since I know it's good to use ranged units when available and that the Japanese are pretty alright in terms of archery range (though they don't have a direct bonus from it), I was curious which one was the best for early Imp or post Imp? And also with which units I should pair them up with (Samurai? Siege? Halbs?)

I usually play in Team Games with a lot of my friends who are alright at this game imo (though they've never played ranked as well), and I do enjoy playing aggressively and in flank position although I don't know if that changes anything.

Any advice on which unit to use against which unit/civ or in which situation is highly appreciated. Thank you so much and have a good day! :)

The DE DLC Campaigns are the best the game has ever seen (ESPECIALLY JADWIGA).

    Posted: 25 Oct 2021 10:48 AM PDT

Minus Edward Longshanks, all the Lords of the West, and Dawn of the Duke Campaigns are the best AOE 2 have ever had. ESPECIALLY Jadwiga. In story, voice acting, game design and continuity (All the Dawn of the Dukes Campaigns had recurring characters) Jadwiga is hands down the best official AOE 2 Campaign. Each scenario got better than the last and starting from scenario 3 they were already hitting all-time best individual scenario campaigns.

    I'm curious if others agree?

[PSA ]Not strictly AoE2 per se, but Game Pass is on sale for $1. For anyone interested in AoE4 or anyone who doesn't own AoE2 DE, I'd recommend grabbing the Game Pass for a buck and then Game Pass Ultimate for another buck, netting you $2 for two months of Xbox Game Pass on PC.

Really good comeback with Britons.. in the late imperial, my town was destroyed by Vikings.. I let my villagers run through the map and collected some gold and wood.. Mass archers and a few trebuchets were enough to conqueror!

Even I've won the game.. whenever I loose and good chat with the enemy(!), I'm being happy.. Thanks Microsoft!

I should have take better screenshot, such as my glorious army :)

P.S: I don't know if I should blur the names but I don't intend to hurt or humiliate someone. Don't get me wrong.

Viper stream and community appreciation post

    Posted: 25 Oct 2021 02:39 PM PDT

Watched about 4 hours of Viper's aoe4 stream on Facebook earlier today. The majority of the chat was very nice and was active, people were giving the link to how to make a gamerpage for those who didn't want their actual name displayed (I chose to keep mine unchanged), and Viper himself seemed very happy. It reminded me of how much I love this community. Regardless of everyone's opinions on the changes in the past couple weeks, I just want to remind us that we have earned a reputation as a generally non-toxic and chill community. Let us not ruin that reputation by name-calling or belittling people we disagree with. I know this is a relatively random and disorganized post, but I just wanted to put it out there.

Decided to play a little this morning...

First game someone afk, second game someone afk again. A while ago the matchmaking got updated and supposedly it was gonna make the game better, but the matchmaking is still garbage the same as before. It feels worse to be honest, if you consider how many smurfs are playing. Is multiplayer on this game dead? It feels like every game one of the following will happen:

    • Someone is afk and it is insta-lose
    • A smurf will rush a lower elo player, force them to quit and then insta-lose
    • Someone that is clearly way lower elo than the rest of the players is taking their time building their base to make it pretty and then insta-lose

And before trolls start annoying me, I don't complain because I lose, I hate winning on this game too because it feels like every victory I get is because the enemy team had one of the previous! Why is it so hard for the devs to balance the matchmaking around average player score, win rate, and other actual player skill measures, like Dota does for example? And actually punish people that troll or go afk? (definitive edition for reference)
