New tricks for an old Empire dog?

    Posted: 14 Oct 2021 03:54 AM PDT

I'm 35 - I was there for the birth of our great AoE franchise, spending several hours wrangling idle villagers when I should have been revising. I then had several years in the wilderness (blame Apple Mac) 20 years to be precise. But now I'm back (with a PC). Spent the last few weeks getting up to speed with early game tactics. Got my feudal age time down to between 9 - 11 mins. Feudal age can be hit or miss but I'm slowly learning how to predict counters from enemy feudal age attacks. Attack me in the dark age and I'm a goner! I've noticed that I love the simplicity of the early game - fewer options = less stress. As soon as I reach castle age I turn into some kind slot machine addict and start hammering the hotkeys like it's whack-a-mole! I get two extra TC's down and the economy is looking good but then little blips of enemy colours appear on the map and 5 minutes later I'm swarmed and everything's burning despite having a bank of resources. I can't seem to go fast enough to spend the resources I'm gathering. So as per the title - any advice for an old empires dog looking to learn new tricks?

PS - I purely play as Britons because I'm totally original and feel like playing as anyone else is a betrayal to Queen and country being English and all...

Finally tried archers on the ladder

    Posted: 14 Oct 2021 04:58 AM PDT

Today I finally broke my habit of only playing scouts into knights by picking Mayans on the ladder. I never really play archers even in unranked but the last two days I took the time to practice a build order and tried it twice in ranked today, both ending up being very dominant wins vs. Tatars and Vikings. The basic plan was to go straight archers, maybe build 1-2 eagles against skirms and then mass crossbows like crazy in castle age which apparently can easily overwhelm players at ~1050 elo. The next step is obviously to try with a non-S-tier civ and still succeed but I'm glad I finally broke free from always playing the same strategy.

I can only suggest any other one trick ponies like me to just try something else once in a while, it's fun and can work even if you're not as comfortable as in your standard build!

Scorps did not kill any crossbow but for sure did weaken them.

The matchmaking ban is a good idea but the execution is awful

    Posted: 13 Oct 2021 11:03 AM PDT

Joined a 3v3. Teammate drops 30 seconds into the game. As is customary, me and the remaining teammate resign. This has been the standard behaviour for many years.

I just got hit with a 30-minute ban for this.

Could I propose that the penalty should apply only to the first player who disconnects or resigns from a team game?

Is Marketplace the best 1vs1 map for UUs

    Posted: 14 Oct 2021 08:30 AM PDT

You have so much stone. You have practically unlimited gold. Trade bonuses like those of Italians, Spanish and Bohemians shine too. So basically making all UUs and Paladins possible.

    Quee Dodgers

Since the update i had absolutely no problem with time-outs, beacause i don't dodge maps wich i dont like (i like open maps, ban watermaps, and i win arena) and people crashing out of the game happens very seldomly.
Opinions? is it really so bad?

Do priests start healing farms and fishtraps automatically, like with other units, or do I have to click every farm?

Favorite Civs as a new player - would like some suggestions for others I might like!

    Posted: 14 Oct 2021 12:41 AM PDT

Yo! So relatively new to online, I've mustered the courage after beating most of the campaigns on hard and being able to *sometimes* beat the hardest AI on 1v1 arabia. I've just gotten up to 1100 ELO in 1v1RM and 1000 Elo in team games. Hype!!

So far in 1v1's I lean very heavily on calvary. I have the scout rush into knights nailed, and not so surprisingly I have the most success with Franks. I have a lot of trouble against meso civs. I know the counters- skirm/maa line to beat the possible rushes, clean up with cav in castle/imp but I find it quite challenging to survive the feudal pressure aztecs and mayans dish out. I also hate playing as them since no cav options.

In team games I broaden out a bit. Franks are good but I recently discovered Persians after taking the Spirit of the Law quiz, though a bit outdated I love the civ. Solid eco that snowballs out of control as pocket, an amazing cav line, a unique unit that slam dunks the left over feudal rushes that may be in my base, and what I can only describe as lengendary xbow spam potential in the late game. Turning all that wood I would otherwise trash in the market into a neverending sea of xbows is so satisfying even as a player that hasnt experimented much with the archer line. Also heavy camels AND halbs! The options are just solid.

As it stands though- I'm just a two trick pony only really good at pushing cav in feudal throughout with two civs. I want to branch out to infantry and archer builds but am not sure which civ to practice those build orders with or which I will enjoy as much as Franks and Persians. Also being a low ELO player, I don't use seige as much as I know I should be- basically just trebs with the occasional onager but I never invest in the tree much. Are there certain civs that would be better than average for a new player to experiment, maybe "git gud" at using seige with?

    Anyway there it is.

TL;DR - I LOVE calvary, hate meso. I like strong eco bonuses and strong units- Franks and Persians. What other civs should I play that are in a similar vain but for the other unit types? also monks are gross, but I like the monastary techs.

Best way to cut through trees?

    Posted: 14 Oct 2021 06:27 AM PDT

    With Onagers.

What mechanics do you use to cut through a line of trees? E.g. on closed maps like BF.

I usually shift click a bunch of trees through the fog of war . However when the tree targeted gets deleated the onagers moves there instead and stops shooting the others queued in.

    Any tricks?

Do you include a scout in your pack of 10-20 knights for the added line of sight?

    Posted: 14 Oct 2021 06:05 AM PDT

It's +4 tiles so you can see monks and pikemen from further away and react accordingly. I don't exactly know how worthy that would be to include a scout in my knights but I am tempted to start doing it. Plus they can always take down a monk for free.

    Farm cosmetics idea

    Posted: 14 Oct 2021 05:48 AM PDT

Just had the thought: what if each civ (or civ group's) farms represented the typical crops grown in their country of origin?

E.g. Vietnamese rice paddies, French vineyards, Mesoamerican Cornfields

Purely a cosmetic change, of course, but would be super fun to see.

Finally beat the AI on moderate

    Posted: 13 Oct 2021 09:16 AM PDT

Got back into the game recently after "playing" as a kid (basically sim city with cheats against the easy AI).

I've been lurking this sub, and watching some youtube videos with general tips and beginner dark age build orders.

Was able to beat standard AI very easily, but kept getting rolled by the moderate AI's seemingly endless trash spam before I could build up an army.

Finally beat them twice yesterday, as franks and as spanish. In both games I did a feudal rush of 5 scouts to harass their villages, killed several. Then focused on building more TCs as soon as I hit castle and really pumping out villagers, building a few castles, and going heavy into knights/conquistadors in the second game. Fully upgraded to paladins, withstood the trash attack with my castles support, and then invaded and finally beat them.

This is basically rambling at this point but felt really good, going to try to beat them without using the knight line, then move on to hard AI or playing online I think.

How many of you have opened or forwarded ports to improve network performance?

How many of you have opened or forwarded ports to improve network performance?

    https://preview.redd.it/azgh4cp9pet71.jpg?width=1119&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=af25a94412debc1315ac3d602f3473beb8b32051

I'm wondering how many of you have followed those specific instructions and whether or not you were successful. If you were able to open and forward your ports successfully, was the improvement you experience in connectivity noticeable?

I tried myself, but even after figuring out how to open and forward my ports, a port checking tool available online (https://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/) showed the ports closed. I then had it scan all of my ports, and they all show up as closed.

I have been playing DE on a laptop using wifi. I am aware that this is a problem, so I will be buying a usb adapter to use ethernet cable, instead. But I'm still curious how much of the poor connectivity I experience in games is attributable to not having those ports opened. Any input is much appreciated!

Timeouts and players trying to work around it

    Posted: 13 Oct 2021 12:57 PM PDT

Since the new timeout rule came into effect I've had a number of games where players will refuse to play. They will either go afk, get their vils killed by a boar or exit a few minutes into the game.

I have reported them all but I doubt that'll do much to change the overall behavior.

What do you think of the timeout ban? Have you encountered this behavior? How can it be improved to stop the cheeky work arounds?

Tbh I'm not even sure I like the timeouts anymore. Getting into a game only for it to be ruined is much worse than players just quitting before a game starts.

How to deal with a lame?

    Posted: 13 Oct 2021 05:15 PM PDT

Sup people, I'm currently sitting at 13XX Elo and suddenly people start laming boars almost every other game. Since I didn't have to face that situation up until now, and couldn't find a good video on YT, I was wondering what my reaction should be. Currently I just resign cause I can't be bothered, but obviously that does not improve my gameplay. So here I am wondering what to do when being boar lamed.

Assume, I notice it, but my scout is out of position to stop it.

    • Do I make dark age farms? If so, how many to comp for the boar?
    • Do I have to drush? If so, what vill count should I aim for feudal age then?
    • Should I push and/or long distance deer?
    • Do I just go 6 on berries?

I know there is no magic formula, but what should I aim for?
