    Memb appreciation post

    Posted: 19 Oct 2021 01:15 AM PDT

So after recent events and realizing how few casters the scene actually has, I would like to take a moment to appreciate Memb for his efforts in the community.

Not only organizing great tournaments, but over the past year he has more and more become the hub for all that is AoE tournaments. There are have been so many events going on that its difficult to keep track off, but you could be sure, if it had any relevance to the top players Memb would cast it.

No need to look around who is casting the match or tournament that you are interested in Memb got you, he'll have it covered. Let's hope his channel gets the attention and growth it deserves and for him to be able to secure AoE popularity on twitch!

Historical tidbit: Spanish forget to research siege engineers vs Aztecs at Tenochtitlan

    Posted: 18 Oct 2021 09:50 PM PDT

This is referenced in Cortés' Third Letter, late in the Siege of Tenochtitlan:

Since our powder was running very short we had spoken over a fortnight before of making a catapult: and although we had no engineers really competent to undertake it, yet some carpenters offered to make a small one... The catapult took some four days to put into position even after it appeared in the square, Meanwhile our Indian allies were proclaiming to those in the city in what a marvelous manner we were going to kill them all... Both hopes however were doomed to disappointment, for neither did the carpenters succeed in working their engine, nor did the inhabitants though frightened make any move towards surrender, so that we were obliged to cover up the failure of the catapult by saying that moved by compassion we were unwilling to kill them all.1

Cortés tends to be understated, but we have another account from Díaz del Castillo with some more color:

In Cortés; camp there was a soldier who said that he had been in Italy in the Company of the Great Captain and was in the skirmish of Garallano and in other great battles, and he talked much about engines of war and that he could make a catapult in Tlatelolco by which, if they only bombarded the houses and part of the city were Guatemoc had sought refuge, for two days, they would make them surrender peacefully... Cortés promptly set to work to make the catapult... When the catapult was made and set up in the way that the soldier ordered, and he said it was ready to be discharged, they placed a suitable stone in the sling which had been made and all this stone did was to rise no higher than the catapult and fall back upon where it had been set up... Cortés at once ordered the catapult to be taken to pieces.2

Finally, we also have an account of this instance from the Mexica side of things, in Book 12 of Sahagún's history:

And then those Spaniards installed a catapult on top of an altar platform with which to hurl stones at the people. And when they had it ready and were about to shoot it off, they gathered around it, vigorously pointing their fingers, pointing at the people, pointing to where all the people were assembled at Amaxac, showing them to each other. The Spaniards spread out their arms, showing how they would shoot and hurl it at them, as if they were using a sling on them. Then they wound it up, then the arm of the catapult rose up. But the stone did not land on the people, but fell behind the marketplace at Xomolco.

Because of that the Spaniards there argued among themselves. They looked as if they were jabbering their fingers in one another's faces, chattering a great deal.3

All in all, this is a relatively well documented event during the war between the Mexica and the Spanish-Tlaxcalans. It fits with the Spanish having to rely on items like gunpowder being delivered from the coast and having to improvise. Some projects, like the brigantines constructed by Martín with Tlaxcalan labor and the utilization of native craftsmen to make crossbow bolts were fairly successful, but the catapult is recognized as an unequivocal failure, with only who to blame for its construction and failure being in question.

PSA: glhf and gg are for yourself

    Posted: 19 Oct 2021 03:10 AM PDT

think of it as anti-salt, try and imagine you are against the avarage version of yourself.

Thoughts like oh its one of those one-trick pony's, can't play anything but franks fucktard will negatively affect your gameplay and makes the ladder less enjoyable for everyone. And for all you know he picked random, or does so 90% of the time but is not feeling on top of his game right now.

in my experience 90% of people who rage at the end of games don't say glhf at the start and people who do almost never rage (or at least don't type it out)

    Are odd strategies not appreciated?

    Posted: 18 Oct 2021 09:32 PM PDT

I have felt a lot of negativity recently when playing, casting or discussing odd strategies. I fully understand that not every strategy can be everyones favorite... but can't we embrace odd strategies for the breath of fresh air that they are or have we come to a spot where only Meta play is socially exactable.

Understand getting lammed, TC rush, Berber vill rushed, tower rushed, siege tower hop, or other odd strategies can be triggering... but do we really need to get salty over this? can't we just embrace the beauty of AOE2 and all the strategies contained in it.

a lot of us complain about the same civ being picked but when fresh ideas come out with odd civs I find that we shut these ideas down.

Guess what I am trying to say is that AOE2 is a Wonderfull game, that I love all the oddities, and that I am worried that we might be suppressing odd strategies.

Regardless I for one will keep playing odd strategies regardless of ridicule!

    App to Practise Build Orders

    Posted: 19 Oct 2021 12:56 AM PDT

I am the developer of a new android application AOE 2 Build Orders

I had made the application for personal practice and subsequently decided to share the app on the play store. But I am not very experienced in the ways of the Build Orders and also I am also a beginner in AOE and unable to decide if the app is more useful than a regular old PDF or a printed sheet of paper.

I am here to ask if the Idea is useful or is there anything I should improve moving forward.

Edit: There are no Ads/Purchases in the app. It's just to help other newbies like me learn the starting better.

Poll: Is there any way to override the current 2v2 meta for open maps?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2021 02:43 AM PDT

Hi all! I'm going to ask a straight question to you (not like last week's, sry, btw), but let me explain myself a bit about 2v2 matchups in Open Maps (mainly Arabia):

EDIT (I'm going to write it again for those who think I'm trying to ask for a buff/nerf of any unit): I'm not asking to buff or nerf anything. I like to PLAY RANDOM CIV and I'm asking about possible strategies if I find myself let's say as Bulgarian facing Franks + Mayans. Sorry to those who read it and gave their honest opinion.

Current state: What we are seeing today (and all pros do it, so it is vastly copied) in >90% of games is a combination of a strong Archer civ (Britons, Ethiopians, Mayans,...) or at least civ with access to FU Arbalester (Vietnamese, Japanese, Vikings, Incas, Chinese,...) with a civ with a good fast access to knights (Franks, Lithuanians, Huns...), especially if these can be upgraded to Paladins. Both civs usually have a good early eco bonus, and that leaves behind other good archer (Italians, Saracens,...) and Cavalry (Teutons, Slavs, Persians,...) civs. Both 2v2 most important Tournaments in 2021 (Empire Wars Duo 2 and Two Pools 2 – Thanks Lidakor!) have shown this combination, with very few exceptions, just for certain maps that include water or specialties.

In fact, Two Pools 2 Tournament (in which you choose one civ for the other team to play) showed that civs who lack mainly a good Arbalester/Paladin and/or a good eco bonus were a common option to choose for the opposing team (Spanish, Celts, Goths, Burmese, Burgundians, Turks, Sicilians, Bulgarians,...).

Off-meta: Pikes, Camels and Monks (+a couple of UUs) counter Knights. Mangonels, Skirmishers (+a couple of UUs) counter Xbows. What counters one of them is weak to the other. The only exception could be Cavalry Archers, and in fact, the civ with the best Cavalry Archer + a good eco bonus was the only exception to the rule of Arbalester/Paladin civ pick (Mongols). But never forget that teching into Cavalry Archers is way more expensive than massing Xbows or Knights. The middle path (mixing counters into the main army) has important drawbacks. For example, mixing Camels into a Knight army (and not all civs get access to Camels) could be countered by the Archer player aiming for Camels. Mixing Skirms into the Xbow army leaves the mass more difficult to micro, and a unit that, at melee range, won't attack the unit that's attacking him. Infantry has become a bit more viable when fighting knights, but they're equally weak to archers (Malians and Huskarls being one of the few exceptions). There are also Unique Units that fare very well against one of the units, but they are also locked behind a Castle. It seems that, if the knight + xbow players play well, there's not much the opposing team can do.

Nerfs proposed (Disclaimer: I'm not asking to nerf them): The only two options that have arisen to give more chance to "off-meta" civs were discussed also by Hera and his followers, and one of them posted the idea many months ago. It involved increasing the Knight creation time in Castle Age and increasing the Xbow upgrade cost. This would especially affect civs whose eco bonuses get going a bit later (Khmer, Teutons, Slavs for example). In any case, any nerf to these two units should be paired with an increase in Eagle creation time, for the impact that it'd have in 1v1. FC civs like Spanish or Mongols would also benefit here. It'd be a very big change indeed.

Civ drafts: On a recent post, I've seen the idea of civ drafting. It's an option, since, imo, civ picking should never be forbidden. But both teams could agree to enter a small draft before playing. The draft could be introduced as an option before the game, and could include bans. The drawbacks I see would be still delaying more the start of the game, and making matchmaking more difficult, because if one team doesn't agree to draft civs, they could not be matched with a team asking for drafts

My question here is: Can meta Xbow + Knight be countered? Or the only chance to open up a bit the unit diversity 2v2 in open maps is nerfing both Xbows and knights (again, I'm not asking to nerf them, just want to know your opinion)?

I'd like to know your thoughts, and if anybody had success countering the strat, please share it with us!

Highest Effective APM during Red Bull Wololo V

I just analyzed 98 of the 102 #AoE2 games from #RBW5 with @CaptureAge. One result is a list of the top 5 players with the highest effective APM average across all games. They are: Vinchester, @Hera_Aoe, @JorDan_AoE, @Liereyy1, @TheViperAOE. But in what order? What do you think?

What is everyone's view on pausing during a game?

    Posted: 18 Oct 2021 10:02 AM PDT

I personally don't mind as long as it's not a super long pause. I was up against a guy who didn't want to wait the couple of seconds it would take for me to get my kid a drink and was wondering if more people feel that way or are like me and don't mind. There is only so much you can prep for.

If new Arabia spawns hills all around your starting base then TCs should be able to be built on them

    Posted: 18 Oct 2021 05:34 PM PDT

There's so many hills circling your base now, to the stage it's difficult to place TCs near starting resources.

I understand they want Arabia to be more aggressive but it's like my base is a crater which is whatever but I'm regularly finding it difficult to place TCs next to my other gold and woodlines. Would there be a downside to this, I don't see why not considering other buildings and castles can be placed on hills?

Using a a house or a palisade foundation to guide villagers

    Posted: 19 Oct 2021 12:05 AM PDT

I realized I do this but essentially only because I've seen higher elo players do this:

Say I want to drop a forward castle and want to send vills forward. I select them and have them build a house forward which I may or may not build.

What is the rationale for this/why do players do this? I figure it is so you can hear by the house completion notification that they've arrived. But I'm not sure. Any other reasons?

2nd TC on Gold or Wood?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2021 02:13 AM PDT

I usually drop a tc with the workers from the resource the tc is gonna be producing for (tc on gold - use about 4 gold workers, tc on wood - use about 4 woodworkers) so i found sometimes its good to drop the 2nd tc on gold, so that the woodworkers can keep working and i can build the 3d tc earlier.
but sometimes, especially when i want to make knights that can cut my gold income for a while, so i rather drop it on wood and when there are more woodworkes after the tc is built i can drop the 3rd one on gold.
Even when doing a knight rush i find it imporant to drop more tc's as soon as possible, so i can build my advantage futher up, even if i do decent damage with the knights.
Did some of you have similar thoughts? Should i never make a tc when knightrushing? should i use vills from different sources or what do you think?
Also i usually make 4-5 scouts in feudal age and wall, to go as fast to Castle age as possible and i use civs who help with that like lithuanians or magyars.

    Quick play matches

    Posted: 19 Oct 2021 04:53 AM PDT

Are quick play matches ranked in any "hidden" way? I don't believe so, but I've seen people claim that, including on this sub.

So what's the deal? Are they just randomly assigned (as I think they are) or are they somehow "ranked"? It wouldn't make sense to me since the point would be that they precisely aren't ranked matches, but it's w/e.

What are the exact rules to avoid a timeout now?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2021 08:17 AM PDT

Afaik you have to stay in a map for atleast 5 (ingame) mins before leaving. Do you have to do anything during that time or can you just afk?

Also over the past fews days when I got mega random I could just delete my TC and suicide the vills into an enemy tc without getting a timeout, today I got a 4min timeout for that. Was that patched or what happened there?
