Don't worry, your opponent's map might be even worse...

Started a game today, realized I had terrible woodlines. Thought I was screwed, and decided that my only hope was to rush to feudal and go all-in Feudal with a Tati Rush. Arrived at my opponent's base, and as it turns out, his woodlines were even worse. Lesson is to not get discouraged. You opponent's map might be far worse than yours. You may have terrible woodlines, but your opponent may have even worse woodlines with forward gold as well.

Is there a mod that gives me a quick overview of my opponent's tech tree?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 02:03 PM PST

Since the last patch, hovering over the tech tree button will give me a quick overview of my own tech tree.

It looks lovely, but I don't need that. I know my tech tree. I'm a noob so I pick civs.

What I really could use is the same feature but showing my opponent's tech tree, as well as (or rather: especially) their bonuses.

Anyone know of such a mod?

    Appeal to queue bans

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 12:06 PM PST

I Just was removed from a queue because the game crashed. Now I have to wait half an hour to enter the queue again. 5 min I could live with, but to wait half an hour, not because I quit, but because the game is buggy is not acceptable. Can I appeal to this in some way?

    Compare players' KotD4 performance

As the title suggests, this only looks at what happened during KotD4 (starting with the round of 32). You can select multiple players, though it works best with only two. E.g., here is Daut vs Nicov, today's first matchup.

Each had 4 games in the tournament so far. Each has a 75% win rate. Nicov is slightly faster and has a better K/D ratio. But Daut killed way more units. You can do your own comparisons at https://dondinardoni.com/king-of-the-desert-iv-in-numbers/

I wish there was a "Set Gather Point to self" hotkey

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 12:09 AM PST

There are times when you want to garrison all your freshly produced troops inside their production buildings. Currently you have to manually cycle through e.g. each Archery Range and right click each building to achieve this. I think this would be a good QoL hotkey for late-game, which would enable you to select e.g. all Archery Ranges and then set the gather point for all of them in one swoop.

Anyone Else Find It Weird How Little The 2 Newest Civs Have Been Changed?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 06:01 AM PST

Just got thinking that there have been 2-3 patches since the latest expansion was released and so far the only changes to Poles have been to give them SE and increase the training time of Obuchs slightly and there have been no changes to Bohemians (if I'm remembering right).

I think these civs were better balanced at launch then most others but they're definitely still a little imbalanced. My impression is that they're both decent but unspectacular on open maps and top tier on closed maps, with Bohemians especially being OP on Arena.

I don't think much would need to be done to balance them out a little more, maybe removing the 2nd free mining techs and/or the extra spear bonus damage from Bohemians and nerfing both of their UUs in some small ways. Maybe then also give Bohemians 1/2 price chemistry or full price but instantly researched chemistry to make them a little stronger on open maps.

What balance changes would you make to the new civs, or are they actually fine and I've just wasted all of our time?

Looking for a Buddy for Co-op Campaign

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 04:00 AM PST

    Hey, everyone!

I've recently started playing AOE2 again on DE, but I'm relatively noobish, around 900 Elo on RM 1v1.

I wanted to start Co-op Campaigns to see how they work, and was looking to see if one of you may be interested. Preferably someone comfortable with English and (not a deal breaker, but) someone who can be on a discord call while we play for more fun.

Hit me up in the comments or DM.

Hopefully this goes down well. 🤞

    Cheers!

Edit (25.11.2021): Teamed up with a buddy from my time-zone, but feel free to use the comments section for this kind of matchmaking.

I am having trouble getting into scenario editing and modding

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 11:14 AM PST

So every now and then I am a bit busy with the scenario editor, and before Definitive Edition was released I also made a few mods (I used advanced genie editor) for the game which introduced custom tecnologies and custom civs. I was very happy with this being possible for my childhood game.

However, the problem I'm having is that the information to make such mods is really scattered around and for Definitive Edition I'm not even sure where to begin anymore at all, and I couldn't find any proper guide to get me into it again. I tried to check the official forums to maybe get a tutorial but no luck there either.
I can still figure out with trial and error on how most of the scenario editor works, but to get into the deeper part of triggers for example, like using custom variables, is something I'd like to use but something I definitely need more explanation for to understand and use it myself.

Is there still an active group of people here who is into modding and scenario editing? Or does anyone know a good source for tutorials on how to mod the Definitive Edition of AoE2? I would really appreciate either.

    Need help with MARKET

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 08:38 AM PST

I guess it must be a simple fix, but I can't figure it out...

Somehow something changed in my game and when I hit a hotkey to buy/sell resources, doesn't buy/sell 100 resources as it always did, but now buys or sells the maximum possible amount of resources...

If I don't hit the hotkey and click in the UI button works OK. What did I changed??

I would appreciate some help with this please. Thanks in advance!

Fun with siege towers on Arena (Inca)

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 01:21 AM PST

Just had the most fun 1v1 ranked game on Arabia playing as Incas. I am low ELO (800) with a 30% win rate

I went for a 23 vill feudal, with a focus on food and gold.

    The fun begins:

Just before I hit feudal I sent 2 loomed up vills (with scout guarding nearby) to each of the enemies gates.

As soon as feudal hit, I walled them in with stone walls. I then made 1 tower right at the far corner of their wall with 1 vill. It goes up as all they have is cav. I thought this may pressure them to focus their military on this side and maybe even drop a defensive castle later (We'll come back to that).

Meanwhile I started massing Eagle Scouts and attacking the other corner of their wall to confuse them.

Well, I think they panicked; they started creating scouts and skirms. I figure scouts destroy eagles, and skirms are a cheap range unit to keep me attacking their walls. I had to redirect my scouts to different areas of their wall, and they would follow. I had about 10 scouts at this point.

Now back to my tower; They hit castle and dropped a defensive castle on the side of their base to destroy my tower. It dies pretty quick lol. All the while I race to castle and started stone mining heavily during the transition.

As soon as castle hit, I queue up 2 siege towers. I recall my massed Eagle Scouts (now probably about 20) and filled the towers with them + 1 vill. I sent them over the walls to attack their vills, and tried to drop a castle in their base (lol), but my army got shredded by their cavalry. I think I maybe killed 4 vills and a few skirms.

    So that failed. Bad.

So I switch to a mixture of pikemen to deal with cav, + scouts to raid, + 2 mangonels to pressure from the other side of the wall.

I ready my anus for the second wave, and set my siege towers on their wall, (I wasn't aware till just now that they can stay their as a ladder for your units!) with my mangonel protecting nearby.

    It begins.

I start flooding them with upgraded pikemen to attack cavalry, and eagles to destroy their vills and skirms. Their cav starts dropping like flies.

Their castle was too far away to do shit!

Finally, for the cherry on top, I send a flood of vills (10+) that were mining stone and drop a castle within their walls, protected by my cav and scout meat shield, just out of range of their TC.

The castle goes up, my eagles start destroying their woodline, their town bell rings.

    They call the GG

    ——————————-

Beautiful. I love being a noob.

Anyone have any siege tower stories to share?

How does melee armor and pierce armor work?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 04:52 AM PST

Hi, I have been playing this game for a while but I still don't understand how armor affects the units? Why is it okay for knights to run under TCs after castle age armor and not before that? How does +1 armor affect so much?

They're both on sale right now, which one do you recommend? I'm intrigued by the Poles but the civs in LoW look interesting too.

Should you be banned for refusing to resign & attempting to outlast your opponent? (Poll)

    Posted: 25 Nov 2021 08:58 AM PST

Let me start off by saying I don't at all agree with this & think you should just suck it up, buy spies & clear the map with patrol/attack move if your opponent doesn't quit.

Some people on /r/aoe2 however believe you should be outright banned for refusing to quit, claiming it's against the games rules & that "No sport in the world would allow it" clearly unaware of the timewasting that goes on in football, MMA, boxing & even blitz chess.

Is it BM to play cat & mouse running around with your king or last scout/villager? I would personally rather just leave if I were losing, while on the other hand I genuinely enjoy hunting down my opponents & clearing their base over them resigning early.

    What do you think?
