I get unrightful cooldowns for leaving lobbies all the time

    Posted: 16 Nov 2021 01:36 PM PST

Help. I constantly get errors when I try to join unranked team games and now my cooldowns are 30minutes. Enough for me not to have time enough for my evening aoe2 match.

I find a match. The timer ticks down and then when it reaches 0 or sometimes before I get some random error (0xffffff something like that) and I cant play for 30 minutes now? Yesterday it was 10 minutes, I fear I might get cooldowned to oblivion for technical issues that have only really started to become a problem after the new matchmaking features were introduced...

I have an LTE connection if it matters, so UDP packet loss might be a tad higher than your usual cable connection, but its usually not a problem. It only started happening some time ago, where I would get a lot of errors when trying to match a game, but now with the cool down technical issues like these are pretty infuriating...

The game should be able to handle packet loss if that is the case. If it is server side error, I don't see why I should get punished. My internet is pretty stable even though its LTE, I can ping foreign servers all day with minimal packet loss, if any.

Do you guys pick civ in 1v1 ranked?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 01:52 AM PST

Just had a ranked 1v1 Runestone, Franks vs Chinese.

I went 4 stable castle knights all in(pls dont blame this build order, i am not good at remembering real build order and i know this one doesnt make any sense 11). But anyway, since the opponent planned to go xbox as I scouted early on, obviously I just won the fight right before his xbox massed up with the first several knights. Then I got into his base and kept raiding his base with light cav and knights, and soon he resigned, but ending up with something like 'you're just lucky', 'tryhard frank', etc....guess he got little bit tilted, 11.

and i was like, what? dude i didnt pick civ. I just selected frank, but I kept the random button on, that means if he kept that button on, both of us should get random civs other than the one we preselected.

after all, do you guys really "pick" civ in ranked? For "pick", I mean disabling that random button and select a specifc civ u want to play. Plus, what's the point of him blaming me over himself picking civ, as I am the person who actually made compromise for people who want to play random vs random.......

Top 5 Arb + Siege push civs on open maps

    Posted: 16 Nov 2021 06:57 AM PST

Hi all! Today it's time to check my top5 Arbalester + Siege civs for open maps (mainly Arabia). Eco bonuses become very important and a consistent game plan until getting to Imperial Age is needed to carry out this strat. Unlike for closed land maps, I gave less importance to the availability of BBC or booming bonuses. There are many candidates for this top, but I chose these with the best of my judgment. Let's check it out:

5th: Chinese. With one of the best early eco bonuses that is reflected on a 2 vill advantage, Chinese can pressure early and gain advantage from then on. Their versatility is well-known, thanks to a wide tech tree and savings on techs, which helps with transitions. Researching Arbalester, Bracer, Ring Archer Armor, Chemistry and Onager or Siege Ram means saving 690 resources. With Siege Rams and Trebuchets (although lacking Siege Engineers) as the best Siege options, Chinese can do a nice push with their FU Arbs, and mix a meatshield (Light Cavalry or Halberdier) depending on enemy response.

4th: Ethiopians. Ethiopian eco is not as strong as other civs' on this list, but they make up for that with insane Archers. As I pointed out on my original post, the Ethiopian Archer-line deathball is so dangerous, that many civs relying on Archers need to mix in or go straightaway for Skirmishers to stop it. The biggest issue of going for Skirms is that it puts a handicap on your eco with their wood + food consumption. The free Pikeman upgrade is also very useful when facing a Cavalry unit. In Castle Age, Ethiopians can take military advantage, be aggressive and advance first to Imperial for their Arbalester + Siege push. They get the most complete Siege Tech Tree, so this strat is carried out perfectly by them.

3rd: Britons. Britons are regarded as one of the most "predictable" civs, but of course, that doesn't mean that they are not deadly. With their early Shepherd eco bonus + Faster working Archery Ranges + Cheaper extra TCs + Extra Range on their Archers, it seems "a bad play" not to take full advantage of these features. Unlike the rest of the civs, Britons are less likely to receive a badaboom from Mangonels/Onagers, since their Xbows (8 range) outrange Mangonels and Arbalesters outrange Onagers. With 11 range (10 range if you still haven't researched Yeomen) Arbalesters, Britons become very dangerous in early Imperial, forcing a switch into Skirmishers, Rams or high pierce armor units. It's worth mentioning their Trebuchets, who can snipe enemy siege and groups of units, and Onagers, which, being Skirm and Ram counters, are essential to guard your Arbalesters.

2nd: Mayans. Mayans' tech tree is geared towards Archer production. With a nice eco bonus and cheap Archers, they are one of the civs that could most easily afford a 3 Range Archer production. The Archer mass can become critical and thus uncounterable, and Mayans in Imperial Age get access to the Siege Ram for building razing (along with Trebuchets), Halberdiers against Cavalry and 100HP Eagles against Skirmishers and Siege to end the game. One of the most popular flank civs on Team Games, Mayans could be hard to stop if you let them mass Archers.

1st: Vikings. I regard Vikings' free Wheelbarrow and Hand Cart as the best eco bonus in the game, which makes them very strong if their economy grows undisrupted. It's true that they lack a strong powerhouse, but that doesn't matter when you are the first who can afford any unit available on their tech tree (never forget that they have a solid Knight rush even without Bloodlines). In Castle Age, they get full eco potential and can stockpile a ton of food (when they're going Xbows) to advance to Imperial very fast. With Siege Rams and 3 infantry options for support, Vikings are one of the civs with the fastest Arb + Siege push.

So, what do you think about the list? Gimme your opinions! Next and last will be closed land maps! Have a nice day!

    Newbie's strategy

    Posted: 16 Nov 2021 09:40 PM PST

Ive just quite recently started playing aoe2 after i got my game pass, so i've just played 10 or so games, new to this game... i want yall to tell me if my strategy will work efficiently. Im not a complete newcomer to rts games, ive played some before aoe2 too such as 0 ad and ironically aoe4... so the strategy i use is kinda like an early boom kind of, since the past few games ive adopted a Strat of setting up a basic economy at hope you know like boars and farms but i love the forward gold and stone...(around the 30 min mark i usually have around 20 grand of each resource) so i usually make encampments to secure the resources...over time i like to develop these smaller bases into outposts with town centers and their own barracks and all... i love to secure gold very early and leave inbase gold as emergency because as everyone knows upgrades are very useful, since the past few games, my eco gets set up very well and those mining bases turn to forward bases by the castle age and a key landmark i love to set up my gold towns near is mountains because in the game, when i make these bases, i start this gradual forward line whi because of early stone allows me to build a line of say 4 or so castles, allowing me to fortify hills, after that seige workshops and then i move forward slowly with the bases, and eventually, i get the complete middle ground which allows encirclement of enemies and then the resources i accumulate allow me to make raiding parties of hussars and soon when the enemy economy is week because of the devastation by hussars and all, i launch a forward attack... till now, ive only played against normal-hard ai and the strat has worked... will it work in multiplayer? also... i use that gold for as many upgrades as possible on the civ's highlight units and siege units...i also love the spies upgrade which you get for 16000 gold from castles....

Does playing the campaigns instill any bad 1-1 habits?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2021 08:46 PM PST

I'm a n00b campaign player (done with all except Jadwiga, Bayinnuang 5, Alaric 4, and Attila 5) who has recently been dipping my toe into 1-1 games. Mostly I play quick play random civ. Already I can see that I'm valuing stone too highly because the strategy of build a few castles, turtle, and assemble a deathball works pretty good for most campaigns. Obviously my Dark/Feudal ages need a little work because most campaign scenarios start in mid-Castle but I'm wondering if there are other adjustments y'all can make to help me make the switch.

    Still interested in “nothing” maps?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2021 03:45 AM PST

I've been tinkering with my own very very unique nothing map for the past month.

I haven't seen anything like it yet and I've found it really fun in play testing

Any interest? If so how do I share it with the community?

I love watching T90 content on noobs and novel maps on YouTube. I'd love to actually get a very short video highlight / trailer of it to him if possible when I'm finished too as I think he would love it and show it on his channel 100%

I'm a programmer by day so naturally it uses triggers to do some really novel stuff to make it a "Nothing" game with the X factor. But they aren't quirky triggers, they are sensible quality of life triggers. I haven't seen a nothing map at this level lol

How i suppose to play with old Vietnamese in arabia?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2021 11:05 AM PST

I'm a voobly player, 16xx-17xx... and I'm not a baaaad player, I know to use a lot of strategies and have some good and bad civs.

I was playing Vietnamese x Mayans now, on Arabia. I thought: "well, Mayans... he will open archers, and they're cheaper... But he have eagles too... so my army should be Champs + Imperial Skmis/castle archers... with that combo I should win. And with that in mind, I started.

My map wasn't good, front gold... but had back wood, berries and Stone. So... front gold is bad, but I could dela with easily. I put a Tower protecting my Gold/main wood and closed the map very well. All this with a fine M@A open (I killed one vill, stayed in his base for 1 minute and half and killed his 3 M@A + Eagle Scout)... so it was a very good M@A open. He really did archers, a lot of them, but my transition to Skmis was very good and in feudal I was protected and had some damage in his base.

But after that was a downhill. He went Eagles to counter rmy Skmis, and find a hole in a fucking tree that on villager cutted IDK why. I tried to counter his Eagles with Long Swordman, and used Skmishs. I went 3 TC trying to boom and secure my resources, but it was dificult to deal with.

My impression is that even doind a much more number of archers his eco was better... And that what a feel in every game with Viets... their eco is just BAD. Fuck man... it's so frustrating.

How I suppose to play with old Viets? I NEVER won a single game with this civ except in BF or Arena. I just don't know what to do more with them in Arabia!!!

ps. Their Stables aren't good, and elephants are slow as hell. Impossible to counter a army of eagles, for example.

What am I missing for 10 minute fast feudal build?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2021 11:46 AM PST

I'm just doing a regular 10 minute Feudal Archer Build Order with 22 villagers...

It had been a while since I played, but even then I kept reaching feudal with 22 villagers as late as 12-13 min, which isn't even close to good...

So I tried checking a bunch of things more carefully such as: 1. Build houses like 3 pop away from cap to avoid slowing down of queueing of villagers 2. Force dropping food off the boar to avoid any wait time between villagers 3. Not forgetting to queue villagers

What else should I do on this list to be more efficient and reach Feudal earlier? Because even after doing most of this properly I reached at 12 minutes in like 5-6 games today...

    Thanks

I've only just started to realise this was a thing in scenario editor. Now I'm making huge set piece battles with upwards of 12k units on the map.

My pc lags like hell with it but I love seeing so much action on screen.

Pokey skirmishes just don't do it for my anymore.

    Posted: 15 Nov 2021 03:08 PM PST

It was amazing. I'm never touching the singleplayer again. I lost my first two games and won the third, due to my supreme onager skills and mental warfare. And the fact he was using crossbowmen and not a single knight. As Franks.

But mostly my amazing onager skills. I love this game.
