Video series idea: How to beat common builds

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 09:01 PM PST

There are a bunch of videos showing how to do the common builds you see on the ladder, but what about videos about how to beat them? In particular a lot of builds done on the ladder you can end the game simply by knowing how to counter it. For example Spain's 12/10 into unique church FF is very common and pretty potent (piroshiki and draztik are known for this), and if you knew how to defend it, you'd probably win instantly.

Not much of a youtuber myself, but thought I'd suggest it since the big remaining AOE3 youtubers post here.

Why do I always get matched against people who are way better than me?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 12:24 PM PST

Literally EVERY match I get matched against people who just crush me

Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Edit: I don't play ranked, only standard supremacy/treaty

Civ that gets the most hate tier list Treaty version

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 03:14 AM PST

    Tier S

    Mexico, Japan, Russia

    Tier A

    Inca, USA, Ethiopia

    Reasons

Mexico - Soldados, Soldados, and Soldados, the most frequently banned civ in lobbies. Those dudes tear down walls like they are made of toilet paper or something, in one game I had 15 layers of walls and when I was able to react half of my vils are dead, that's how fast they go through walls. On top of that Soldado can be trained from their hero and field hospitals and they train very fast. (with some native tech they can even become instant I think)

Japan - The same old Shogun/Daimyo unit spam from multiple directions, long range mortars, fuck tons of buffs. Have to engage them in a choke. If your base can be attacked from multiple directions you basically can't leave your base ever. (This is why I never play 1v1 in treaty, as in team games players can cover each other's back)

Russia - Same with Japan but with instant Infantry spam. Has a card that buffs Infantry siege damage so they can really tear down your walls fast, although not as fast as Soldado. Impossible to leave your base unless the map allows you to set up a choke. In some maps with rail roads that goes into your base, you just can't deal with Russian aggression cuz there's not enough space to build enough walls. Although I would say against Mexico Japan Russia no amount of walls is safe.

Inca - Much less powerful than those above but is very sneaky with invis buildings as well as Chasqi able to receive shipment. Have to research spy, or build all your defensive buildings inside your base. Kalanka overpop is another reason you have to turtle super hard against this civ at the beginning of fight.

USA - Not really a cheesy civ but with almost never ending eco and units that are basically better version of their euro counter parts. The saving grace is their eco although is super powerful, it's still a notch below China/Brit and their rather expensive units making their eco drainable even with a eco worth of 120 vils. (99 vil + 5 wagons + 8 CDBs)

Ethiopia - Very annoying with Gatling Camel spam, and ability to steal your mine so that fucks up your boom.

    Treaty vs deathmatch

    Posted: 24 Jan 2022 09:25 PM PST

hello. i'm wanting to share my thoughts on aoe3 game modes. I have been experimenting with different game modes and playstyles to add variety to my usual competitive supremacy games.

I used to play deathmatch a lot when i was a kid. I liked the convenience of high numbers of reasources.

recently i tried playing deathmatch for the first time in ages and i was impressed! the AI played well, making large armies and attacking me. the action started quickly but wasn't overwhelming. the resources were high enough to give us 4-5 big fights before we ran out.

I enjoyed it so much i am keen to try deathmatch with a human. i have not yet had the chance as i have seen no games and no one has joined any i've hosted

I see deathmatch as a good alternative to treaty for me. I enjoy the occasional game of treaty, but i am no fan of extended treaty periods. Building my base over and over gets boring. when i play treaty i prefer to play with a 20 minutes period. I don't understand people playing treaty games of 40 or 60 minutes. I don't want to wait that long. With deathmatch i was able to build a base and army and attack quickly. Because it started in the post industrial era, i did not have to research techs. It was refreshingly simple.

I am wondering what the community's thoughts are on deathmatch? i notice online there is either supremacy or treaty. i never see deathmatch. I imagine there are some issues with balance and speed, but i don't understand why 20-60 minute treaty periods are common and deathmatch games are non-existent. Do people not want to jump straight into fighting?

    New unit?

    New unit?

I found these units in the post about Empire Wars. Are they from new DLC? In my opinion they look little "napoleonic". Any ideas?

    New campaigns

    Posted: 24 Jan 2022 11:00 AM PST

Hey guys, what do you think is the possibility of seeing new campaigns in the near future? With the new civs there is big potential, but yet it doesn't seem like the developers are using it.

    Fuck my graphics

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 02:43 AM PST

apparently, I need to buy one of those fancy gaming pcs, because my 2017 Macbook is not good enough for the remastered version of a 2005 game.

if I accidentally leave my browser or any other program open, you can bet the game is gonna crash 99% of the time at some point.

and I'm playing on the LOWEST possible settings.

    Frustrating as hell.

    Counter for Mass Gatling Camel?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2022 10:30 PM PST

I find mass Gatling Camel to be quiet powerful, and it is one of the few true counter to Mexico Soldado spam. They are very cheap (140 gold and 140 influence if you send all cards and upgrades, 280 resource for a 4 pop unit is among the cheapest in the game, After getting like 30k food then using the Charity card, you have more than enough influence to spend for the rest of your game) and when fully upgraded do 24x6 dmg with 18 range and 3 rof with very little negative multipliers (only 0.75 vs Heavy Cav and 0.5 vs Artillery but you still kill those very fast due to high base dmg and siege dmg type). Their multiplier vs Infantry is insane, you shred any type of Infantry even Soldado and Maigadi melt like butter, mass Chimu surround from all direction can give you some trouble but only Inca civ have access to those.

On paper, Culverins should be the hard counter to Gatling Camels, but you can use the superior mobility to simply get out of Culverin range, Culverins will never be able to chase you down.

Light Cav + Heavy Cav comp trade not too bad against mass Gatling Camels, but playing as Ethiopia you also get 12 Conquistadors and they provide very good meat shield for your Camels as well as anti Heavy Cav. (and they are great to have in the same control group with Camels because having the same movement speed) Also if you kite instead of standing still you can actually trade very favorably even against Light Cav + Heavy Cav comp due to Gatling Camel having superior range. Ethiopia train Camels and Conquistadors very fast as well so you can easily re-max while most your opponents will have harder time keeping up with you.

Gatling Camels are especially useful in team games, you have the mobility to help your teammate and still get back home for defense, great at map control especially sniping trading posts and picking off astray Infantry and Artillery groups.

Only effective counter I can think of, as theory crafting, is build layers and layers of walls and turtle behind them and fill the map with your walls and defensive buildings, to eventually deny the space for Gatling Camels to maneuver so they have to eventually fight you straight up, that is the time they are become vulnerable.
