THE most insane comeback of a 2v2 game EVER!!

    Posted: 21 Jan 2022 11:47 PM PST

    My ally name: moist

Haven't played aoe2 in a few months. A bit tipsy. Black Forest. Ranked 2v2. I barely got to castle age when both of my enemies had trebs+mangudai stacks at my walls. Walls, which were close to my base. I thought we were lost 100% but didn't wanna be the first player to quit the game. I lost ~4 castles, tons of army and workers. Economy was bad... too much gold and wood, not enough food to send stacks of anything. I was attacked so freaking hard I had to sell most of my gold and wood just to buy food for a few stacks of knights and scouts to hold enemies from killing my frontline and workers.

I was 100% sure we had 0% chance to win the game but didn't quit just because I hate it when my ally quits when he gets fucked in other games. I just tried to freaking survive and not die. Then my ally (moist), sent stacks of scorps+elephants to the backlines of enemy frontline. Game seemed still quite lost but might as well play it out. Somehow we(he) deleted the trebs and my ally destroyed enemy eco (one that was closer to him) and then he sent the stacks to the backlines of my attacker and smashed it.

Then we (he) destroyed the frontline of the attack to my base and I kinda helped with shitty scouts but I feel my REAL strength was NOT FUCKING QUTTING.

I've never been this euphoric about a videogame, EVER. The feeling of being fucked so hard, having almost no army, no economy, no tech and no hope, yet somehow still being in the game. The feeling of coming back into the game and possibility of winning was gradual and so was my euphoria.

UN. FUCKING. REAL. What a comeback, what a victory. I've played videogames my whole life and this has got to be #1 comeback of my life. Thank you moist. I still cannot believe we won the game.

And this is the reason why I wrote this: no matter how bad it is, just fucking play it out and see what happens. Don't whine, dont type. Just play.

God damn well played and well carried Mr Moist. Never give up. Never surrender!!!

New at the game, need some pointers! Replay inside ~

Hey guys, so I started playing a few days ago after watching some T90 videos on YouTube. It's pretty fun so far! I'm like 800 elo and struggling. I've played some other strategy games before so I have some basic grasp of map awareness, hotkeys and such (although I've learned like 3 hotkey thus far: farm, house and peasant). I'm a total noob at AoE2, but I was decent at SC:BW.

I picked Japanese to learn, and started to use somewhat aggressive play with barracks and archery range in my games, and I think I'm doing well in early, I win a lot of games vs sloppy walling, but I'm also struggling a lot vs more experienced players who just wall up and rush to imperial, and then proceed to take the whole map with castles. I have no idea how to break through, as it seems way too late to start pushing with trebuchets after I get my own castles and imperial. Perhaps I could have intercepted his off town centers instead of going for his base, but it feels like this also leaves you exposed to knight rushes and sniping off your siege army.

I'm posting a replay of a game I just played on four lakes against some guy with Lithuanians. He walled like crazy, then went full macro mode. I killed his army again and again, but he just kept producing those elite horses. In the end he just harassed my workers and went all-in on my TCs until he won. It was a bit funny game, but typically what always happens to me when I go for a longer game.

I know very little about what upgrades and such are useful in late-game and I probably should have gotten a university at some point. I'm also a bit unsure of how many unit facilities you add, when you stop making workers (is it really useful having over 100? The guy was apparently at 139 villagers!) etc.

    Crazy military stats

Is the Feitoria keeping the Portuguese from being a good land civ?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2022 01:38 PM PST

The Portuguese excel at two map types: water maps and closed maps. According to the statistics they struggle in the early game on open maps, because their bonuses don't help them too much during these stages of the game. Some people say they need something during that stage of the game to be a competetive civ.

My question is: is the current Feitoria design preventing the Portuguese from getting something meaningful for the early game, because their late game potential is so strong? Especially the ability to wood-starve enemies on water maps seems to make this unique building quite hard to balance. Generally speaking I like the idea of a unique building that generates resources, especially gold (a Feitoria is trickling 12 more gold/min than a relic, so you can potentially have income of 10-12 relics - 360g/min).

Should the Feitoria be available in the Castle Age with a build limit? Should the Feitoria be completely reworked/tweaked or even removed to make the Portuguese easier to balance? What are your ideas?

Personally I would like to keep the Feitoria with a potential build limit of 1 in the Castle Age and 3 in Imperial Age and it only generates food and gold.

Would anyone be interested in participating in an AoE based NationsRP?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2022 10:48 PM PST

Would anyone be interested in participating in an AoE based NationsRP?

So basically I've been creating a very detailed plan for how the NationsRP would function, made custom maps, set up rules, and created a custom scenario in Age for the battles to take place in, before realizing that there might not even be anyone that would want to participate. So anyway, I decided that I would reach out and see if anyone would be interested in joining. The gameplay is a weird mixture of AoE, EU4/CK3, and Axis and Allies. You would play as your own custom nation with your own name, cities, emblem, and history vs/with other players with their own nations. You can form alliances if you want or backstab unsuspecting allies. There will be various leaderboards for Economic Power, Military Power, Influence, and Total National Power. In addition, I want to make a time-lapse of the map as it changes over time with armies moving, territory changing hands, and empires toppling.

Here's an gameplay guide that I made to kind of show how it would be played.

    ━━(Object)━━

The object of the game is to grow your National Power as much as possible. This can be done in three separate ways, those being increasing Economic Power, Military Power, or Influence. A nation's Economic Power is calculated from your nation's Income and Treasury, Military Power is calculated from your nation's military force, and Influence is calculated from your nation's Territories, Cities, and Ports. A chapter can only end in one of two ways. A chapter will end if all still existing nations decide to sign a World Peace Agreement. It can also end if there is only one alliance or nation still alive. A new chapter does not have to wait for an old chapter to end in order to start. If there are enough players to start a new chapter, then the chapter will start. Players still playing in an ongoing chapter can still join new chapters.

    ━━(Map)━━

The map is composed of thousands of territory cells that make up both the land and the water. Each nation starts with the same amount of territory, one Capital City, one Port, and three smaller Cities. The map includes terrain including grasslands, hills, forests, and mountains as well as rivers, lakes, and oceans. Players will claim nations from the map on a first come first serve basis until all of the nations are claimed and then the chapter will begin. Multiple players can all run one nation or all play as their own and form an alliance. Here's a custom map that I made:

    ━━(Phases)━━

The game is played in a real-time/turn-based style hybrid. There are three separate phases in each week with different actions available to perform. In each phase, players are simultaneously given two to three days to submit their actions for that phase which will be recorded or performed by the game masters. The first phase is the Preparation Phase which is available from Sunday to Monday. In this phase, Income is collected, economic units and structures can be constructed, and military movements are executed. The second phase is the Organization Phase which is available from Tuesday to Wednesday. In this phase Loans can be taken or paid off and military buildings and structures can be created. The last phase, the Conflict Phase, is available from Thursday to Saturday and is the period that military conflicts happen where players conduct battles. In addition there are various out of game actions that can happen during any phase such as forming alliances, making trade agreements, or additional role play elements. Here's a list of actions that I've come up with so far:

    https://preview.redd.it/qfvzd0kqo6d81.png?width=732&format=png&auto=webp&s=02698525714814bdd250d5cf67eda440fb0de1b3

    https://preview.redd.it/1qubrldro6d81.png?width=731&format=png&auto=webp&s=9a5cab8710fd6f8b7f54592d1d6db1a6fe60418f

    https://preview.redd.it/fyh8rxzro6d81.png?width=731&format=png&auto=webp&s=7ea3aad43686d41ab427676af5dbdc8dfa5654ea

    ━━(Variables)━━

There are two main variables that will dictate what actions you can actually do. First is your nation's Action Points (AP), which are used to perform every action in the game. Different actions will require different amounts of AP and once you run out of AP in a turn you cannot perform any more actions until the next turn. The number of AP you receive each turn is calculated based on the number of Territories that your nation owns and will increase as your nation gains more land. The second variable is your nation's Gold Pieces (GP), which are stored in your nation's Treasury and are required to pay for almost every action in the game. Your nation's Income each turn is affected by various factors including Capitals, Ports, economic units or buildings, Taxes, and Loans.

    ━━(Military Units & Structures)━━

There are many forces that your nation can use to either defend your own lands or claim more. Units can only be created in Cities or Ports. If a military force is moved into the same territory as a foreign force, then you may choose to attack that force. If the enemy force is inside a city or a fortification and you win your battle, then you may loot the city and raze the fortifications and factories. The available military units and structures are Armies, Cavalry Units, War Galleys, Mercenary Armies, Mercenary Galleys, Cities, Ports, and Fortifications. Each unit or structure provides different benefits and has different costs.

    ━━(Economic Units & Structures)━━

In order to increase your nation's Income, you must construct economic units and structures. These include Trade Caravans, Merchant Ships, and Factories. Trade Caravans and Merchant Ships travel to an allies Port or City and provide both players GP but are more vulnerable while Factories are built inside a City and provide a safer source of GP.

    ━━(Combat)━━

Battles will be primarily conducted in a custom scenario in AoE2DE. At the start of the battle the two players will select what terrain the battle is happening on and will receive tokens equal to the military power of their respective armies. They can then redeem those tokens for various resources in order to build their armies and research technologies. Trained units are teleported into an arena that matches the terrain selected. After a certain amount of time, walls will drop in the arena and allow the two opposing armies to fight. When one player's army is defeated, the battle is complete. Strategy must be used both during the fight and before when choosing what units to train and techs to research. While it would be very difficult for a force of one to beat a force of ten, with a good strategy, a force of three or four could easily beat a force of seven or eight. After the battle is complete, regardless of how close the fight was, the losing army is completely defeated and the winning army will have a remaining force that is found by using the table below. Alternatively, if you and your opponent have a different method to determine the winner of the battle, you are free to use it.

    https://preview.redd.it/e5v7mdpuo6d81.png?width=651&format=png&auto=webp&s=e29f7bb823521d04b26141cf4f44b1e79c56e21e

Here's the beta terrain I built for a plains biome arena, units trained are stuck behind walls until the battle starts. I'm currently working on a scenario with arenas four time bigger and with new arenas if the defending player is behind fortifications or in a city.

    https://preview.redd.it/wm9i2gl6r6d81.png?width=1376&format=png&auto=webp&s=c3db2b9b54c3a65a0e3c0489cd7858484ed212e9

    ━━(Example Turn)━━

In the Preparation Phase you could start out by collecting 13GP from Capital, Ports, and Taxes and 10AP from your territory. You then start construction of a Merchant Ship in a port for 10GP/2AP. Afterwards you split an Army for 1AP and then move three total armies for 1AP each. In the Organization Phase you could conscript two Armies in a city for 2GP/1AP. In the Conflict Phase you attack a foreign Army with your own for 1AP and win the following battle. An enemy then attacks one of your Armies and you are defeated, resulting in the loss of your Army.

What I'm aiming for is to get around 20ish people that would would to join in order to start a game and try to grow from there. Right now I'm basically trying to see if I'm just wasting my time making all of this or if there are people that would be interested. Also if anyone has any experience being a mod in a discord server or running any type of NationsRP, DM me if you want to help.

Anyways, here's the Discord Link if you are interested: https://discord.gg/yhyBbthH

    Aoe2 campaigns vs. Aoe4 campaigns?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2022 10:13 AM PST

How did you enjoy the AoE4 campaigns when compared to the AoE2 ones? Personally, I found the aoe2 campaigns so much more fun:

Firstly, they have more mission variety. In Aoe4, most campaign scenarios are really just very simple and short battle scenarios (i.e. run around with an army and beat a couple of opponents) or quite basic build your base, then attack enemy. In contrast, aoe2 has a lot more variety, e.g. starting with an army, doing all kinds of jobs or tasks, eventually building your base. Or all the different types of tasks, bringing Barbarossa's body across the sea or to Jerusalem, plundering villages as Attila.

Secondly, the maps and enemies feel much better in Aoe2: the maps are huge, most areas are relevant, the cities are beautiful and well-designed. There are often many different players, enemies etc. They all have unique, fitting colors. Just look at the different Constantinople scenarios or the El Cid ones, with all the great enemies, designs etc. Or Noryang Point. Or Tenochtitlan. What does Aoe4 have? Boring woodlands, linear paths, small cities/villages. Usually only a 1v1.

Thirdly and most importantly, Aoe4 has much less immersion. There's basically no voice acting, no unique or interesting characters to identify with. The documentary style is a neat idea, but for me it doesn't make me feel as part of the scenario. Whatever happened to La Hire's bloody sword, El Cid vs. Alfonso or the Moors. I felt for Joan of Arc being betrayed and wanted Genghis Khan to succeed. Aoe4? It has disjointed scenarios that are sometimes hundreds of years apart, with a boring past tense-narrator.

Not trying to be negative, but I miss the old aoe2 campaigns so much...

Is there a way to delete my AOE2 data?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2022 09:13 PM PST

I realize this'll sound a little silly, but I want to replay through all the AOE2 campaigns and it would be nice to delete the campaign data.

    1. So I can't skip a mission because I've beaten it before

    2. So that I don't have to remember where I'm at in the campaign

Obviously not that big of a deal, but if there's a simple way to do it it would be nice.

I'm using Steam, and uninstalling it doesn't do so.

I just played a game where some of the players instead of saying player "1" said player "256". And the game would stop, saying I was reconnecting to server, and then catch up about 30 seconds of in game time. It was nuts. Now multiplayer is saying it's down and grayed out.
