Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 13 Week 16: Ethiopians vs Franks

The shooty civ vs the clippity clop civ

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Italians vs Tatars, and next up is the Ethiopians vs Franks!

    Ethiopians: Archer civilization

    • Archers fire +18% faster
    • Receive +100f, +100g upon reaching the next Age
    • Pikeman upgrade free
    • TEAM BONUS: Towers and Outposts +3 LoS
    • Unique Unit: Shotel Warrior (Fast, fragile infantry with very quick train time and massive attack)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Royal Heirs (Shotels train almost instantly)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Torsion Engines (Siege Workshop units gain increased blast radius)

    Franks: Cavalry civilization

    • Castles cost -25%
    • Cavalry gain +20% hp starting in the Feudal Age
    • Mill technologies free
    • Foragers work +15% faster
    • TEAM BONUS: Knights gain +2 LoS
    • Unique Unit: Throwing Axeman (Heavy infantry with short-ranged attack)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Bearded Axe (Taxmen gain +1 range)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Chivalry (Stables work +40% faster)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Okay, let's just dive into this! For 1v1 Arabia and other open maps, Franks are of course going to be quite popular - and not without good reason. Their gameplan is quite straightforward, and although they don't have a super broad tech tree, their bonuses allow them to play both offensively and defensively quite effectively. Ethiopians, meanwhile, are probably a bit behind in overall strength. However, in this match up, the free Pikeman upgrade can certainly come in clutch, and Franks do have some of the worst Skirmishers in the game. Can Ethiopians effectively use their military options before being run over by Franks?
    • On closed maps, both of these civs feel like they're just a tier below the top civs. Franks are always going to be solid with their economy, and cheap Castles, strong infantry, and gunpowder are all useful on these types of maps. However, cavalry is generally less effective. Ethiopians, meanwhile, have all of the military options they could ever need, but still lack that critical long-term eco bonus. How do you see these civs playing out on your Arenas, BFs, and Hideouts?
    • In team games, these civs are polar opposites. Franks are easily the most popular pocket civilization, what with their strong economy and powerful cavalry play at all stages of the game. Conversely, Ethiopians are probably a top 5 flank civ, as their aggression into archers play can be difficult to stop - especially as it transitions into Ethiopian siege in post-Imp. When comparing these civs, how would you approach playing against the other: playing Ethiopians vs Franks pocket and vice versa?

Thank you as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Bumese vs Huns. Hope to see you there! :)

I know it's not too interesting, but I just beat the hard AI for the first time after weeks of trying and it feels satisfying.

If you're having trouble with Francisco de Almmeida 5 (A Son's Blood), you can cheese the scenario by simply using a siege tower to pass through yellow's barricade. Go absolutely ham once you do, the AI is allied and won't react to ANYTHING. You can literally steal their gold.

I'm sure this was listed as fixed previously, just a heads up that it's happened to me twice in the last three games.

Banned on jordan twitch chat without warning for saying something controversial, but on-topic and (IMO) onpoint.

    Posted: 13 Jan 2022 05:56 AM PST

The current topic of the chat was literally 'who is jordan most like'. People started comparing him with Hera, hoang, other people outside aoe.

I thought myself that Novak Djokovic comparison was kinda spot-on. one of the very best in their field, and same kind of lifestyle. yes, that includes being 'critical' of vaccination. I didn't even bring that up, mods straight up banned me after comparing him to Djokovic

I mean, I understand why I'm banned. but , it feels a little bit silly and worrying that the largest streamer atm at large amount of time is banning people who compare him to other anti-vaxxers :(

I mean, this topic is quite heated and discussing it over the internet is rarely worth it. but straight up banning somebody for just making a comparison of a similar person is IMO not entirely fair.

just leaving this here. maybe I'm just being super petty and i got what I deserved lol. curious what people here think.

How To Stop a Castle Drop [T-West]

I finally beat all of the campaigns and I'm very satisfied.

    Posted: 12 Jan 2022 09:45 AM PST

I've played AOE2 since my brothers and I first got the demo CD. We loved the first game and a sequel that allowed you to build gates was pretty mind blowing. Since I was much younger then I didn't really understand the mechanics or the counters but had a lot of fun building cities and then destroying them with the scenario editor. It was during college when a buddy of mine got me back in the game. It was hard watching Huskarls destroy my Longbowmen. I had no idea massed longbows could even be beaten, but after a few years of consistent gameplay and learning how the game worked, it became more challenging and fun since I could finally take on the harder difficulties. Still, I had no desire to play the campaigns. Just didn't seem fun to me since I could only ever complete William Wallace or the first scenario of the other campaigns (except Barbarossa).

Then the HD expansions came out. My buddies and I would get together and do some Diplomacy LAN parties. The new civs made everything feel a bit more immersive with each new release. Again, I just couldn't get into the campaigns. Maybe it was the Ming destroying me in Le Loi 1 or I couldn't seem to get all the relics in Montezuma 1. I just sucked at them. I was also caught up with modding and making sure every civ had unique architecture and units, changing the trees into crystals from Galactic Battlegrounds or the music files.

By the time DE released my friends had moved on to other games or hobbies and I had grown pretty tired of random maps. I liked all the new features and really wanted to explore the game (zooming in and out of the screen is pretty rad) so I had no choice but to start Kotya Khan. After completing those missions I could not believe how much I had missed out on by not going through the campaigns. The devs have created so much content that goes underrated. Jadwiga and the story of Poland may honestly be my favorite at the moment, probably because my dad's family came from Krakow back in the day, and it was a blast to explore the maps and that part of history.

I'm so glad this game got picked up again. It's come a long way and I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes. Well done devs.

    unable to choose a civ

    Posted: 12 Jan 2022 06:15 AM PST

I've had the same bug twice in a row, I go on the ladder, get a game, click to choose a civ and the game just stops reacting to anything I do. The civ selection button is slightly enlightened, as if it was about to open but it doesn't. Can't go back, can't check ready, can't chose a color and most importantly, can't chose a civ, all I can do is watch the countdown reach 0 and start my next game with a random civ

    Anyone has had this issue?

Edit: disclaimer: I'll downvote any answer that says "play random" or anything of the sort. Not looking for a way around the issue, looking to solve it

Edit 2: ok, apparently this is a known issue https://forums.ageofempires.com/t/ranked-teamgame-pre-game-screen-unresponsive-during-countdown/185254

My proposals for new buildings, that would be mostly eye-candy but could serve a little purpose too

    Posted: 12 Jan 2022 12:04 AM PST

Tavern / Inn: can provide 5 populations, and garrison units with a medium healing rate. More expensive and more HP than a regular house.

Jeweler's / Goldsmith's: if you drop a relic at the goldsmith's, you get 100 gold once, but then the relic is permanently removed from the game.

Baker's: building that restores HP in exchange for food

Saltern: basically a farm that can only be placed on shallow waters. Collects gold instead of food, at a very slow rate.

Court: if you send a villager to the court, it can either win the case and you gain 100 gold, or lose it and the villager dies.

Joiner's workshop: eye-candy building that can research lumbercamp techs but can't be use as a drop-off point for wood

Mason's workshop: eye-candy building that can research lumbercamp techs but can't be use as a drop-off point for stone

Bath-house / Hammam: building that garrisons units and heals them at a very high rate; but monks have a +10 attack bonus against them. Must be built near water to work.

Heretic monastery: allows you to train heretic villagers, that have more HP and can't be converted, but cost gold instead of food

Cobbler's: can research a unique bonus that gives all your units +1 speed

Clothes shop: can research a situational bonus that gives all your units +5 HP if there's snow on the map

Bank: can be used as a drop-off site for gold; can also be used to exchange ressources like the market

Burgher's house: can train a burgher, an expensive unit that can be sent to the bank or the market to improve exchange rates

Just played with my nephew for the first time

    Posted: 11 Jan 2022 11:55 PM PST

My sister and I played AoE2 a lot when we were kids, but didn't really know how. We pretty much exclusively played black forest death match FFA against easy AI with all techs turned on, and our meta was getting every tech before advancing and not engaging until post Imp. Obviously the first time I played against friends I got crushed and was confused by their "early" castle agression while I was still in dark age lol.

Fast forward to adulthood and I rediscover AoE and actually try to get gud. I play more "normal" random map Arabia 1v1s against moderate AI and usually go for a fast castle or something, usually on slow speed so I can fine tune my early eco build orders and micro. My sister texts me to ask "what was that game we used to play" because apparently her son is starting to game, which is weird because last I checked he was in diapers. Anyway, I went ahead and just bought him the game a few months ago and tonight we finally played together. Guess what his play style is.

I'm hosting so I set it up as a 2v2 random map Arabia on standard difficulty because I imagine he's probably a little green by comparison. Then he requests the following changes in order: * 2v2v2 * Moderate difficulty * Fast speed * Turbo mode

At which point I'm starting to get real intimidated and worry this kid is about to mop the floor with me.

Then he adds "empire wars". Aaaah, now I get it. He also suggested all techs, but I said no to that one because I have standards now lol.

    EDIT: Also 500 pop.

Anyway, it was actually a lot of fun. A part of me wants to show him the "real" way to play, but honestly, it's a game. I'm just glad he's enjoying it, and who knows, I may start playing the occasional turbo fast empire wars game myself, if I'm in the mood for a ten minute speed game.

    What is the Socotra Meta?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2022 02:01 PM PST

Socotra just joined the 1v1 map pool, and I think it would be a good map for me to favorite for a while. I am a big noob (900 elo, been playing for like a month) and I think my biggest weakness is being able to apply consistent pressure and deal will consistent pressure. I tend to just follow my build order, boom in castle, then attack when I realize I'm pop capped. As tiny and resource scarce Socotra is, I can imagine this style will be punished pretty thoroughly. So I think playing it a lot might help me develop as a player since it emphasizes my weaknesses.

There are a few things that I want to learn about the map before I dive into it. First of all, you are missing 2 sheep and 1 boar compared to other maps. There seems to be a bit of extra deer (5-6 instead of 3-4). Is it worth milling the deer, or should I just gitgud at pushing them in with my scout? Is a farm or two needed for a smooth DA?

What is the opening meta? On Arabia I do a lot of scout builds, but this seems kind of slow for how close you start. Is drushing the meta? Pre mill? M@a archers? Towers?

I've watched the few videos I could find from Viper and Hera on this map, and it looks like at high elo it is basically just a lame/bill fighting fest. Is this true at low elo too? If so I might give up on this map, I feel like clown show DAs won't do much to help me get better.

    Thanks!

(Added a poll for the opening to go for. For some reason it is saying text posts aren't allowed on this sub???)
