Even if no crossover if AoE can use some of the QOL features that blizzard RTS has. SC2 is such a smooth game mechanically.

What are some things that AoE players do better than other RTS players, and vice versa?

I come from a background of Starcraft Brood War, and after starting to follow competitive AoE, I've noticed some interesting differences between the two in terms of skill in different areas.

    Brood War:

    - Better map awareness/reaction time. If there's ANY enemy unit that appears on the minimap, there's basically 0% chance that the BW pro missed it, whereas I see a lot of AoE pros miss flanks, or react (comparatively) slowly to raids, etc. I think this is due to BW being faster paced, and requiring faster reaction time, as units can die instantly to a shuttle drop inside your base, etc.

    - Faster APM. This is a given, since the game is more mechanical.

    AoE:

    - Better tech switches. Since AoE is inherently more rock-paper-scissors, players often make quick tech switches that gain advantages over the other player. I see BW pros more often stick to a unit composition really stubbornly, only for it not to work out in the end. This makes sense, since BW has less hard counters, and is mainly up to execution/engages.

    - Micro. It seems like BW pros don't focus on micro as much, especially in the late game, as macro almost always ends up winning games, due to it being more mechanically difficult to keep constant production, etc. I see AoE pros split their units and dodge shots more than BW pros do.

Player name changes during a multiplayer game. What's going on?

Player name changes during a multiplayer game. What's going on?

Just played a lobby game and noticed that the orange and purple player had their name changed. It looks a name the AI would get as you can see in the picture.

    Lauth3 --> Yusuf ibn Tashfin (p8 orange)

Varrus --> Aedan mae Gabrain (p6 purple)

Is this a known thing or can someone explain me what's going on?

    Ai difficulty increased?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2022 02:01 PM PST

hello frens. Me and my buddies regularly played AoE2 VS hard ai (the normal ones) and had like a 100% win rate no problem every run, it was just a casual fun thing we did. we recently started playing again after not touching the game for 2 weeks (we have done longer than that without decreasing the difficulty) but we are suddenly having a very hard time against the ai eventho we never had this before. Did they patch the difficulty of the AI or did me buying the "lords of the west" dlc make them harder somehow? thanks!

    Best Civ for me?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2022 09:07 AM PST

I've been playing the game since 2010 (i'm 17 currently) but what I used to play was a Cd given to me in 2010 by my uncle, now that I got AOE2 DE on steam, I have gotten into online, learned build orders but can't find a civ to take, I first chose the Huns but they didn't work out in 1v1s, then I chose the Franks, they worked well in team games but in 1v1s I get smoked, I currently have only 2 1v1 wins owing both to Chinese early feudal and dark age rush, till now I've won only one game in 1v1 that went above castle age, that also with Chinese, late game seems to be a big problem for me, can anyone suggest me any tips or videos for late imperial to castle age strategies?
