We are 6 old friends who love to play AoE2 and we always struggled with making up teams, since four of us play on approximately on the same level, one of us plays a bit better, and the last guy plays much, much better, he played games with/against top 20 players in team games in ranked, like Vivi and Tatoh, he's that good.

What we used to do is to give the weakest two players to the strongest player and play that way, but even then it was unbalanced and it showed. The guy was just too good.

Yesterday we played a full random team African Clearing, and even though the two better players were in the same team, we the supposedly weak team won the game. Game was very balanced and it was difficult for us to win, but we managed.

How? Easy. We gave the best player 100%, the second best player 105% and for the rest of the players, 110% handicap. That 10% is HUGE.

Very memorable experience, and I want to quote my teammate here: "I feel like I won a Champions League game against Bayern Munich, how did this happen?"

Rubenstock vs Andre_2i hour 41 and counting. Rubenstock finally succeeded to destroy one castle while Andre was away. In other news, there is now also a Romeo and Juliet romance in the middle.

I was playing Celts, guy attacked me before I went to feudal and wiped my eco (I'm a noob), he then recommended I use the pikemen+siege combo, I just had two games there where I worked towards pumping out pikemen/siege and nothing else. I don't even go to imperial age anymore. I won those two games.

Thanks you legend, 800 elo noob

What are your thoughts on a request draw button in the menu? Similar to chess?

Probably wouldn't be used much, but still a nice option to have? Especially if irl stuff pops up and your opponent is feeling nice?

Some cool pics in the campaigns. Can you guess which campaigns and which scenarios? And Bonus points for if you can figure out the context where it was taken.

Rubenstock vs. Andre_2i game is going for more than 40 ingame hours now. Discuss who deserves to win the game.

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 01:57 AM PST

    I'll expand a little bit.

Rubenstock has some vills, few Hussars and few Camel Archers (pop over 30). Andre has one Elite Berserk and few vills (pop 4).. Both completely out of res.

The main objective is basically to kill opponent's Castle(s) (and Rubenstock's TC).

The thing is Andre has Murder Holes and Rubenstock doesn't.

So Rubenstock wins if Andre is afk and Rubenstock micros out Castle fire (which he could do as he demonstrated several times already).

Andre wins if Rubenstock throws away his whole pop under Andre's Castle fire and then Andre still can destroy Rubenstock's Castle and TC because of no Murder Holes. (Important to point out Andre had slightly bigger army and pop like 25 hours ago, at least 5 Elite Berserks, but Rubenstock caught him out of position)

Edit: And what about the situation where both players lose all units? What would be your criterion for a win?

Fortified Friday - Arena Match-ups: Britons, Aztecs & Ethiopians.

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 07:17 PM PST

I'm still learning how a lot of matchups play out on Arena and with the sheer amount of civs we now have there are 100's of matchups all with their own little intricacies. I feel like I have a general idea for most civs but every so often I get caught out making the wrong unit type, taking the wrong strategic approach, or just forgetting that cavalry archers exist! I'm hoping some shared knowledge might speed up the learning process.

Each week I will randomly generate 3 civilisations for us to talk about.

This Week: Britons - Aztecs - Ethiopians

Below are some questions to get the discussion started:

Which civ would you pick out of the pool if your opponent was going to be able to choose from the two remaining civs? Why? What's your opening going to be? Scouts for map control/relics into boom, Trush, Smush, Castle Drop, Straight Boom, Fast Imp, TC Douche? How will the 3 civs fair in a beautiful monk war? If they make it to IMP which of the civs has the better unit composition/deathball? Which civ has the best 1TC YOLO play? How will these civs do against some of the best Arena opening strats? (Turks Jannie/Mango and Bohemian Smush) General thoughts on the civs and how they play on Arena?

    "Porto" DLC hints have dropped?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 09:33 PM PST

The official site's new Sage of Empires article contains four bolded italic words plus one suspicious italic word:

[Beginning of article] I come this week with four lovely tales painting the stories behind St. Valentines Day. … what came before the chocolates, the jewelry, the roses, and fancy dinners?

[End of article] That has a nice ring to it don't you think? I cannot wait to share with you the treasures I have for next week, coming straight from civilizations we have yet to engage with.

Together they seem like they could be a hint for new DLC civs.

Any news or hints on Hidden Cup 5?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 01:54 PM PST

I was expecting HC5 to be announced at the end of Wandering Warriors, but I missed the final day (I'm still behind a day in a half in vods) and I haven't seen any info. about HC5. Has T90 mentioned anything? I'm just wondering because I'd love to try to catch as many games live as possible, but March is a super complicated month for me work and family wise; it would be amazing for me if I could plan ahead for it. Anyways, thanks and WWC has been awesome -- even though I got results spoiled, I'm loving the games. I can't wait for HC5!!!

Attack move micro gives you ballistics in feudal age?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 07:29 PM PST

I started using attack move micro since i saw this video from Survivalist. I've been having a lot of success with it, but part of the reason is because it kinda feels like it's allowing me to hit moving targets. I don't know if it's just my impression, but i did have an opponent jokingly say "ballistics in feudal? ok 11" when i did attack move micro on him and i kind of saw it too.

    Favourite moment from WWC?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 06:06 AM PST

Finally got round to watching the last of the content from WWC. Such a great tournament to watch. I won't spoil the final in case you haven't watched it yet.

What was your favourite moment/match-up? I think here's my top picks:

    1. Dark comeback against Belgium….at one point he had 12 vils, probably the best turnaround I've ever seen. ( Ro128)
    2. Bact vs the tiger….most prolific tiger I've seen in AOE. ((RO16)
    3. Daut Siege Onager in the semi finals. So good to see it in a 1v1. (Semi final)
    4. Viper demo on Portuguese organ guns, I think he cleared 8-10 organs with it, insane. (Maybe the final, or semi final, can't remember)
    5. Lierey castle on golden swamp/hill, such a great game and a castle that turned the tide after some perseverance.(RO32)

There were some cool players too like Dooidy, some unique plays and just an interesting tournament to watch for it's variety of strategies, execution and RNG.

Wish it went on for longer. Thanks to the folks who put it together and participated!

*updated so it shows the round for each reference!
