Tatoh became the best player in the world a year ago - if it wasn't for decisive matches

    Posted: 08 Feb 2022 05:58 AM PST

With Tatoh losing a lot of tournaments recently in deciding matches after great performances before, I wondered about the actual numbers and took a look on all S-Tier 1-v-1 events in the last 2 years. The results are, well, pretty insane.

In the last 12 months (since Hidden Cup 4), those are his results against top-players in S-Tier-events:

    2:3 Viper (2)
    2:3 Lierrey (3)
    3:4 Jordan (2)
    2:3 Viper (2)
    1:3 Lierrey
    1:2 Hera (2)
    2:3 Yo (2)
    2:3 Hera (1)

In brackets I put the number of matchpoints he had in these matches. He had an overall score of 15:24 there.

In all of his 25 non-matchpoint-games, he won 15:10 games.

    In his 14 matchpoint-games he lost 14 times. 0:14.

As a comparison, those are his games in the year before where he clearly did not have the same level and fell short especially to Hera.

    0:2 Lierrey
    0:3 Hera
    0:3 Hera
    2:3 Lierrey (1)
    3:2 Lierrey (1)
    1:4 Hera
    1:3 Viper
    1:3 Hera
    1:4 Hera

Matchpoints 1:1, non-matchpoints 12:26. (The one series he did win was btw in Hidden Cup 3 and featured my favorite AoE game of all time in game 2 on Bay.)

I haven't looked into his results in 2018-19 when he was considered #2 for a while.

Of course there is a small chance that this is just a statistical anomaly, at least it is very probable that it's to some degree just chance. But while I didn't do the maths, these numbers should be a very strong indication that Tatoh is a) normally on a higher level than commonly perceived and perhaps even part of the top 3 and b) a much worse player than he should be when it comes to finishing off a set in high pressure situations.

It does also fit the eye-test because there were a few situations when he seemingly had won the game and threw it (against Lierrey in KotD when it was Knights v Knights with Tatoh having more eco and more army; against Hera in HC 4 on Cup when he had water and siege rams and engaged too early) or when he went for some suspicious approaches (2 days ago against Viper, giving up water on a water heavy map).

Another factor though might be that other players might be able to play a little better when it really counts. Had this feeling with Viper before (remember Hidden Cup 2) and also Lierrey and Hera did have some super impressive performances when they were with their back to the wall.

By the way: AOE Tournament Elo even has him 3rd placed currently, basically on par with Lierrey.

    The real price of gold!

At what Elo the reasons of your victory switch from "perfectly using the civ's strenghts" to "doing something unexpected for that civ" like Teutons archers, Bulgarian CA, etc?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2022 01:24 AM PST

Playing the campaigns, I find that there are many more ways to play some civs that I expected. When you are stuck in castle age, almost all civs have fully upgraded units and we know that some ranked games can end before imperial age.

Edit: I'll just copy paste one of my replies below since it pinpoints my interrogations better than the original post.

    .

I think there are distinct stages.

    • First you don't know your civ or your opponent's civ well and just throw a bit of everything in the unit composition (-> low Elo legends).

    • Your know your civ's strengths and focus on them regardless of what you are facing (1000 Elo?).

    • You know your opponent's civ's strengths too and will play accordingly.

Somewhere in between these stages, there is a level where you preemptively make skirms/spears when you face Britons/Franks and don't rely on your civ at all. There is the opposite: when you make Britons scout rush or Franks archer rush. I'm trying to find where on the ladder this could happen semi-effectively.

Difficulty jump from Standard to Moderate tips?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2022 05:07 AM PST

I'm extremely new to this game (been playing on-and-off for about two weeks) and I'm trying to beat all of the AI levels before moving onto multiplayer so I don't get completely swamped by AoE2 vets, so far I've beaten Easiest and Standard difficulties and can obliterate them with basically any civ that I choose, but the difficulty spike between Standard and Moderate was much more than I was expecting.

Does anyone have any tips? I know I should probably learn how to use hotkeys effectively and manage my economy, but I tend to lose the advancement race for all levels to Moderate AI. My tactic for previous difficulties was train as many villagers as possible to maximise resource income as early as possible, but all that seems to do is waste food.

I'm also trying to get all the Xbox achievements for AoE2:DE so I have a feel for a lot of the civs. So far my favourites are the Vikings, Italians, and Goths. Are there any that are objectively better than others for general use?

You're MVP! And you're MVP! And you're MVP! And you're MVP! Half of everyone is MVPeeeee! (But really; perhaps the algorithm for determining the MVP(s) should be a bit more refined. As the medal itself is nice when it makes sense, which is more often than not)

    Don’t Forget About Watch Towers

    Posted: 08 Feb 2022 06:49 AM PST

After watching a few Wondering Warrior Cup games I started using watch towers more, particularly on African Clearing. Man do they make a difference! One game on Arabia I surrounded opponent with WT while harassing them. I was able to see him fleeing/shifting resources etc and intercept them keeping them off wood and gold, crippling their eco even while mine was a mess due to not managing it lol.

What's the AoE2 font? I mean, after Lucida Blackletter and before this patch. I think it's a serif type, but anyone has the specific name?

Keshik, One of the most underused units?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2022 04:27 PM PST

The Keshik is basically a knight that costs 40g instead of 75g which becomes slightly less when the unit fights in melee. So we can say safely that he is half the gold cost of the knight on average.

Sure he has one less melee armor, one less attack and slightly higher reload rate, but has 10 more hp and is a tiny bit faster.

The comparison of the elite keshik vs the cavalier is even more favourable for the keshik because even though the damage output comparison is the same as vs the regular keshik vs the knight, the elite keshik has one extra pierce armor, is slightly faster and and 20 more hp which means it's quite a bit better at raiding, better vs ranged units and probably around the same in melee.

Of course the paladin is better than the elite keshik having 20 more hp and +3 attack, but the cost of getting the paladin is much higher.

To get to paladin from knight it costs 1600 food and 1050 gold not to mention 4.5 minutes upgrade time.

Elite Keshik only costs 700 food and 900 gold and takes only 40s.

Yes it's only produced at a castle, but the fact it's half the price of the knight line in terms of gold makes it much more viable as post-imp gold unit with very comparable performance.

Someone spectating my games, any way to disable?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2022 03:55 AM PST

Im around 1100 elo and someone is spectating 2/3rds of my matches. I find it really off putting and I also don't understand why they are doing it..

Is there any way to disable this? I just want to play matches without people watching me. I understand at high level it makes sense as people are learning from the Pro's and enjoy watching them.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I have a new appreciation for T90 farms

    Posted: 08 Feb 2022 02:48 AM PST

So I returned to Aoe2 after playing Aoe4 for a couple months and some irl stuff that happened and other than being a little rusty which I expected, what struck me right away is the farm placement.

I didn't use to think about it before, I just placed the farm where I wanted and that was it. But I was so used to the easier Aoe4 mechanic, where you just click the Mill and farms are automatically perfectly placed around it, that I found myself placing T90 farms all the time..! I'm not making fun of his farms again anytime soon :P :P

    Bapheus Tip

    Posted: 07 Feb 2022 06:14 PM PST

When there is a 10-minute ceasefire period, send rams and park near a Turkish enemy castle. You will gain control of their town and resources after their defeat.

When you control the villagers, immediately build your Town Center, and send all the vils to gather wood and create more villagers to get food and a few on gold. Build a Siege Workshop and at least 6-7 rams. When the 10-minute period begins, send the rams to the most problematic Turkish faction (I killed cyan), and once whether you decide whether to pick an ally or go for the achievement, watch the rams crumble the castle, and then say goodbye to cyan. You now have a more decent base to fall back to.

I took out green next, because their castle is within range of my bombard cannons.

Share what other tactic you did here!
