Civ balance in the vanilla AOC (BEFORE 1.0C)

    Posted: 15 May 2022 12:40 AM PDT

Does anyone remember the civilization balance in AOC before 1.0c patch?

All I remember was that Korean magonels' range was so horrible that many online games ban the civ, and Mangudai without frame delay is nightmare for almost all units. Camels were quite weak, not to mention the bug that they had ship armor type and were thus devastated by towers.

I just can't fathom how I lost this game, am I just oblivious.

    Posted: 14 May 2022 05:35 PM PDT

So played a game, Franks vs Lithuanians ~1100 ELO I thought I did everything right. Beat him to feudal. Had aggression made him tower, got all the relics, kept idle time down relatively low and somehow the dude just outscored and produced me at every step. I literally can't tell what I should have done differently. If someone has the time I'd love a second opinion on my mistakes. The only thing I think I could have done differently was produced more halls/pikes instead but I had more attacks on my knights so thought it wouldn't be necessary. Hell even in the post-game stats I beat him in almost all categories, especially eco. Just somehow he outplayed and produced me, even two stable knights.

Never been beat like this when I feel like there is nothing I could have done differently, I was thinking possibly a smurf since less than 20 games but he does have losses at this ELO. Again maybe I'm just missing something.

Looking for Goth mods (not the Hot Topic kind)

    Posted: 14 May 2022 10:10 PM PDT

Because I'm an easily programmable, I've discovered that beating campaign missions on hard gives you a gold disk instead of a bronze one and this shiny nothing is giving me an excuse to go back and play one of my favorite campaigns in the whole game, the first one I played because I didn't know what the swords meant in January so after the Wallace Campaign I started in chronological order in Europe: the Goths. So this means after five months and change I'm going to do the Gaul mission....on HARD. and I'm a chronic Turtler who only can win by camping on the east side of the Rhone.

Aside any advice on how to find and kill the traitor so I don't drown in a sea of purple housekarls that can demolish my castles in seconds, I'm looking for any mods won't deprive me of the shiny gold disk (which as I understand no mod will do that). I'm looking for any Goth related mod, but these in particular (I play single player only):

    1. A mod to remove heresy from all factions (I want those CENTURIONS!)
    2. Any civ customized architecture mod would be great.
    3. Any campaign or historical battle where you play the Goths. I'd love a mirror of the Berber campaign where you try to stem the tide of the Islamic conquest of Iberia or do anything with the very early reconquista where it makes sense to have the Gothic tech tree and units, but any decent relatively historical scenario into classical antiquity where the Goths would be featured like the 2nd century raids into Anatolia or the destruction of the Bosphoran Kingdom (which I'd totally go for an ahistorical playing a reskinned byantines)

    Thank you for your time

AOE2 Puzzle! Which levels can you beat?

Who doesn't like AOE2? Who doesn't like puzzles??

Here is an AOE2 puzzle for you! At each level, there's a set of units/civs that share a particular similarity. Figure it out and solve the last one to complete the set. Enjoy puzzling!

Edit: Wow, that was fast! Didn't expect someone to solve Extreme this quick.

Should Bohemians get Cannon Galleons in Castle Age?

    Posted: 15 May 2022 03:26 AM PDT

Now I know this bonus would make no IRL sense as the modern day Czech Republic and medieval Bohemia were both land locked areas. But ignoring that for a moment and focusing only on gameplay, is this feasible?

I like reading topics on this subreddit that call for spicing up water gameplay of AoE2. A possibility is to expand more bonuses to apply to water. Are there any more you can think of? For example there is a fairly popular idea to not apply Yeomen to Briton Arbalesters. We can do that and apply the boost to their Galleons instead. Kill two birds with one stone.

How do you reach the 100 Villager suggestion?

    Posted: 14 May 2022 10:25 AM PDT

I've been playing for a few months, mostly against AI on Moderate or Hard difficulty, and I rarely if ever make it past 50 villagers. I normally stay with just the one Town Center, and when I try to go the 3 that everything suggests, I get so bogged down with managing the villager output I can't keep up with military stuff. Is this a "git gud" situation or is there some simple thing I'm missing?

    Vills are "dancing"

    Posted: 14 May 2022 03:40 PM PDT

Dunno what else to call it, but I'm having an issue where two vills can path and endlessly walk forward and backwards, trying to pass each other, (like what you do in a hallway or on the sidewalk)

I've had this issue in the past, a number of patches ago, but it went away and now it's back for me

Me and the extreme AI both played terribly

Me and the extreme AI both played terribly

So I was trying to beat the AI as Italians vs Incas on extreme after beating them on hardest and got a very tiny woodline with annoying water variant of Arabia. The AI sent a very delayed drush at me which I failed hard to quick wall, but they were incredibly stupid at the same time so I did end up walling them in. fast forward them advancing to castle age, I sent in my tiny 3 skirmisher army to harass them and saw a TC being built so I tried to stop it but the vills didn't flinch so they ended up building it. I looked at my gold a little bit later and decided to resign because I wanted to also be in castle age like the bot.

Notice how it thought I was winning, so it made a defensive tower? It only had 1 archer as well, which is unlike the extreme AI at all. It pretty much mixed a fast castle strat with an archer range that it abandoned straight away. I could've abused the fact that the AI was extremely passive and attacked if I wasn't so forgetful and embarrassed.

I only play against AI by the way

The bot played like a hard bot that drushes with how slow it was with everything

I have never seen the AI wall (without relic victory) in my nearly 2 years of AOE2 DE. It must've been the new AI defence update that came with the new Indian civs that gave the AI that strat

BO: Gurjaras 24 > 26 Armored Ele W/ Monks Rush ( Arena Team Games)

    Posted: 14 May 2022 11:27 AM PDT

Thought I'd share a BO with the community who might want to play a little more aggressive in Arena games as a flank.

    Dark Age
    +2 - Berries under TC
+1 - Build mill for main berries
    +1 - Mill berries
    +1 - Berries under TC
+1 - Lure boar (TC berries should be finished or nearly finished by this point)
+3 - Straggler trees (2nd vill builds the house)
    +1 - Lure boar
+2 - wood line (can build Lumber camp once you have the 100 wood)
    +2 - Mill berries
    +4 - 2nd wood line
+2 - Gold (3 if you pick up loom prior)
Click up + send 3 vills under TC to stone and make 4 - 5 farms depending on how well you lured your deer after the boars

    Feudal Age
+2 - Gold while dropping a Blacksmith and Market
Click up - Pick up Double Bit Axe, Gold Mining, and the Horse Collar upgrades in that order.
Berries should be finished shortly after this. Send them to whichever resources you need the most atm (i.e. 3 - Stone and 1 - Wood for a faster castle drop)

    Castle Age
Two vills drop a Siege Workshop and one drops a Monastery
Create 4 Armored Elephants and 2 Monks
Send them over and eat their TC(s) :D
Keep TC running with vills and add more to farms for the option to tech switch quickly.

    Quick Tips
Always check your civ match-up here. For example, Mongols and Ethiopians are not a good civ to try this on.
Considering going with more aggression in Castle Age afterwards if you've done good damage.
If you didn't then consider dropping an additional TC and going Imp for defensive trebs and stronger teched units.

Note: This build order is NOT perfect by any means. I'm sure someone could age up 30 - 60 seconds faster while still being able to do the same. This is just the build order I've preferred since it's not an All-In strategy. Please feel free to share any tips or recommendations for this build order and hope you have an awesome day.

Edit: The monks are to convert/deter units from charging your elephants. Quick walling simply doesn't work well due to the +50% bonus damage for cavalry units.

2nd Edit: Terribly sorry for the post-edit format. No idea why Reddit removes my separations, but it's fixed now and should be legible.

FPS drop problems after 30-40~ minutes of playing,

    Posted: 14 May 2022 09:00 PM PDT

As the title out of nowhere of late i've been getting major fps drops after playing agame for 30 to 40minutes and the fps just keeps getting lower and lower the more the game progress. (fps going from 160 to like 80-60 and then it drops more and more)

I've never had any problems with AOE 2 DE before but now it's every game, is this a known problem and if so is there any solutions?

Also i just notice it's using 80 to almost 95% memory, (i got 16gb ram)

How important are the stats available outside the game to you?

    Posted: 14 May 2022 08:31 AM PDT

The question refers to all stats that are not the in-game statistics. For example: general civ win rates and usage, Elo distribution, individual player's win rates, individual player's number of matches, individual player's Elo ranking history, etc.

    Common sources for these stats could be ageofempires.com/stats, aoe2.net, ageofstatistics.com, aoedash.com, aoestats.com, ratings.aoe2.se, aoecompanion.com, among others.
