Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 7 Week 8: Ethiopians vs Huns

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 08:23 PM PST

Uhhh I got nothing funny for this one... Idk both are good civs that I really enjoy playing? 11

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Malians vs Mongols, and next up is the Ethiopians vs Huns!

    Ethiopians: Archer civilization

    • Archer-line fire +18% faster
    • Receive +100f, +100g upon reaching the next Age
    • Pikeman upgrade free
    • TEAM BONUS: Towers and Outposts +3 LoS
    • Unique Unit: Shotel Warrior (Fast, fragile, high-attack infantry that wears a bright yellow life jacket)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Royal Heirs (Shotels created almost instantly)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Torsion Engines (Siege Workshop units get +0.5 increased blast radius)

    Huns: Default Cavalry civilization

    • Do not need Houses, but start with -100w
    • Cavalry Archers cost -10/20% in Castle/Imperial Age
    • Trebuchets +35% accuracy
    • TEAM BONUS: Stables work +20% faster
    • Unique Unit: Tarkan (Medium cavalry with high pierce armor and attack bonus vs buildings)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Marauders (Create Tarkans at the Stable)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Atheism (Okay seriously guys, look at a Shotel. You cannot un-see the life jacket)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • So yes both of these civilizations are considered quite good on 1v1 Arabia. Huns are likely stronger in a general sense (as in, they probably have more favorable match ups), but with that said, I think this match up can be pretty interesting. Ethiopians can hit hard and fast, possess free Pikemen to help them through the midgame, and have a slow but powerful lategame. Is that enough to possibly keep up with the speed of Huns?
    • In addition, both of these civs are absolutely top-tier in a team game setting as a flank and pocket civ, respectively. Both civs can execute the meta strategies for their respective roles flawlessly, and have several powerful bonuses to help them even further. With that said, would you rather have an Ethiopian flank with super-archers, halbs, and siege, or would you rather have a Hun pocket with a powerful economy and Paladins flying out of Stables?

Thank you as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Incas vs Turks. Hope to see you there! :)

Advancing to the next civ bonus/thoughts

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 08:16 PM PST

    Soap Box

There are a few civs that need about a 10% increase in win rate just to make it on the low end of Cysion's 55%-45% win rate goal. In an interview, he said that he wanted to only modestly buff civs but there is no way that you will get that big of a win increase with husbandry or an attack upgrade for example. He also mentioned that some of the Rajas civs are still newish and maybe haven't found a meta for the civ. It's been 3 years so I think it's safe to say that some civs just can't compete. He contrasts the newest civs to the Huns that have been around for a long time and have more of a defined meta. The problem is he makes it sound like once the "meta" is found then you can use that play style forever. The game isn't played the way it was 10 years ago and 10 years ago the game wasn't played the same way as when it first came out. From the ideas that I have seen proposed here many of the creative or unique bonuses get hated on as being dumb or OP or not AOE2 worthy. It seems like many people want the game to stay as is for the most part. The problem is that there will continue to be big disparities among the civs.

    Civ Bonus

The civ bonus would keep the food requirement but substitute wood for the gold cost. Basically this would make civ advancement cost trash. It would allow gold unit production without sacrificing any gold needed to get to the next age. Yes this would be strong but if you need a civ to drastically get better just to barely make the 45% minimum win rate goal then that is what needs to happen.

If this is Frank status strong in practice then you could have 2 solutions. 1) Make the gold cost now the food cost so you would only need food to advance. Food takes longer to get than wood since you need to invest wood into farms and then wait for that to produce food. It still doesn't cost gold but may actually take way too long to get that much food. 2) Stagger the discount to the next age like 15%/25%/35% give or take 5%. I don't like this since the Italians and Byzantines have Age advancement discounts.

TL;DR same food requirement but substitute wood for the gold cost.

Playonmac/wine is just a black screen, please help.

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 08:30 PM PST

Sorry if this has been covered, I tried to search Reddit with no luck.

So wine was working fine, I for some stupid reason was trying to get it open and it was being a bit stubborn so clicked make new desktop shortcut link. It made a new link, I opened said link, the headers for steam were the same but the screen where AOE2 should be was just black.

I've restarted computer, updated play on Mac, googled about a bit, no luck.

Been two days and I'm missing my AOE2.

Also, I know macs aren't gaming computers, our family likes it for other reasons so I adapt.

Any help would be awesome, thanks guys.

Is there a civ that can counter every single army composion with their avaible units?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 12:29 PM PST

I want a puzzle/funny game with strategy discussion. Write a civ name and people will try to pick it apart with their strategy.

Scenario is 1vs1 mid imperial age and you scouted the enemy's strategy.

Axe man+paladin can be countered by mass siege onager+teutonic knight. Britons lose to rams. Etc.

Tell a civ that can fend of any army with proper scouting. Others will try to find an army that counter that civ.

    Discussion: Incas unique architecture

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 12:07 PM PST

    Hi

Do you thinks the Incas needs an unique architecture style, like the Indians? I mean, both Aztecs and Mayas are located in central america, but Incas in South America from Ecuador to central Chile. IMO, buildings like the monastery and the university didn't fit with the inca architecture. The style should be named "Andinean architecture".

Which another civ deserves a unique architecture style? Japanese maybe?

    Hello friends.

I would like to have an army that features heavy cavalry and cavalry archers in equal proportion. What civilization has both good paladins and good CA?
