Right when we get Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, they gotta tease us with an Age of Empires IV trailer.

This game needs a "flatten everything"-option asap

    Posted: 16 Nov 2019 01:55 AM PST

The graphics are gorgeous, I don't want to ruin the look of the game by having to install mods like small trees and walls. However, it is obviously necessary, since clicking behing a tree or a wall can be a nerve-wrecking mess. The solution to this is that by pushing one key (tab or whatever) you can flatten everything for while the key is being pushed (except units) making it much easier to click stuff that is behind other stuff. Stronghold had that feature and I think AOE 2 really, really needs it, too.

Very grateful for Art of War

    Posted: 15 Nov 2019 01:51 PM PST

I have family members that always liked to play AoE2, but they were very casual and would only want to do team games vs the A.I. which was always okay to me. The problem was in our skill gap: it was hard to balance what AI difficulty to use, because I would steamroll all the CPUs almost mostly alone, so we would be stuck to just playing on Moderate and Standard, both of which weren't very challenging or satisfying: for I, and them.

But since they were pretty casual, they didn't want to go through the research of looking up text or video guides on strategies like Fast Castle and Booming. I explained how I use strategies like this and they should give it a try too, but they just were never motivated enough to go out of their way to learn.

Thanks to Art of War, most of my casual family and friends have tried and learned those things and more, and are now playing significantly better so we can now at least play against harder AI difficulties! And they're even having a lot more fun playing the game, as they're more invested in fast castling and booming as fast as possible, and then enjoying the stream of resources for as much military as they want.

So I just want to say thanks to the devs for including this feature in the game. It's made the game more enjoyable for them and myself! Now we're playing together more than ever and having a better time than ever before, too.

    Add nomad ranked to DE

    Posted: 16 Nov 2019 05:28 AM PST

Personally I am a nomad player, and in voobly we used to have nomad ranked games all the time, so it's quite popular. Also black forest was normally ranked (eventhough I am not a bf player), but that's just a map into standard game. Are there any plans to add nomad to ranked?

Age of Empires II Definitive Edition Requires Optimization

    Posted: 16 Nov 2019 05:36 AM PST

I guess I didn't know what to expect from AoE II Definitive Edition, since I just happened to stumble upon this release. I was a big RTS fan from the 1990's through early 2000's, including Age of Empires, so I bought this version without much thought.

I've only had an hour or so with it so far, but these are my initial thoughts.

It seems this is strictly a graphical update to the game because it feels like it lacks any optimization, especially for modern hardware.

CPU optimization seems to favor a single thread. My six core system is only using 12% CPU utilization (70-80% of a single core mainly - others under 10%).

I believe this, in turn, is responsible for having the same benchmark result regardless of what graphics settings are used. There's literally no way someone with a meager system can adjust settings to make it meet the 1000 score requirement by adjusting settings.

RAM usage is ridiculous. It's off the charts. Without Ultra HD textures, system RAM usage is 12-13GB. With HD textures, it's 20GB+ !!!

Considering recommended system requirements are 8GB RAM, seems it needs better optimization to meet 8GB recommended. I can't even imagine trying to play this with minimum requirements of 4GB.

Not to mention that 16GB graphical update seems a bit ridiculously large.

Finally, zooming. Is that all you can zoom in? I can't seem to zoom in or out more than +/- 10%. Can this be adjusted somehow?

Unit and Tech Stats from Game Files

    Posted: 16 Nov 2019 04:28 AM PST

The new DE comes with Advanced Genie Editor (AGE) found in Tools_Builds folder, it allows viewing of game data which cannot be seen in game (and modding but not focusing on that here). Some of the unit stats are quite suprising, and some techs do more than is shown in the techtree. Here is an overview of the interesting things I found:

Steppe Lancer - unit exclusive to cumans, and Tartars - already shown to be very strong (www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDPCk4L7kr4) by zero empires. In addition they have hussar speed and good train time.

    speed: 1.5 (1.65 husbandary, 1.815 Cumans!)

    attack rate: 1.9

    train time: 24 (20)

    attack bonus: none

    • Cumans

Kipchak (horse archer UU) - As can be seen in game, this unit has 0 frame delay and fires 2 arrows. What is not so obvious is that it also has very good rate of fire, 1.53 is faster than plums, though not quite as fast as mangudai.

Fire rate: 1.8 (1.53 with thumb ring!)

multi-shot: shots 2 arrows at once

    Frame delay: 0

movement speed: 1.4 (same as cav archer)

    train time: 20 seconds

attack bonus: +1 vs spears (+3 with partian tactics)

UT Steppe Husbandary - The effect is slightly greater than stated

Stated effect: Scout Cavalry line and Cavalry Archers are trained 80% faster.

Actual effect: Scout Cavalry line and Cavalry Archers are trained 400% faster!

Yeah with conscirption the hussar train in 5 seconds , and cav archers train in 6 seconds (heavy cav archers in 4 seconds), is crazy stuff.

Feudal TC As seen in the game additional Town centre in feudal builds in 150 seconds compared to 100

    • Tartars

Keshik (generates gold on attack) - took me a bit of time to understand what the data was saying (and still not 100% sure, but seems to be accurate from testing), but I think it is getting 50 at a rate of 0.01 - meaning 0.5 gold per hit, the rate is same for elite - it appears to effect every unit, including siege and ships.

    speed: 1.4

    attack rate: 1.9

    train time: 23 (20)

gold rate: 0.5 gold per attack.

    attacl bonus: none

sheep having 50% more food - Seems to be pretty accurate, its very important to have several vils per sheep to take advantage of this bonus though as decay hurts more than other civs. bonus actually gives 57% extra food, but from testing I found you get around 47-50% benefit due to decay.

    • Lithuanians

Leitis (melee cavalry UU ignores armor) - The anti-armor bonus actually has a value (at least I think that is what these numbers are...), 12 and 14 for elite, but don't think it matters except for elite teutonic knights taking 1 less from non-elite. Otherwise very similar stats to Keshik.

    speed: 1.4

    attack rate: 1.9

Attack bonus: none (other than anti-armor)

    Anti-armor bonus: 12 (14)

    train time: 23 (20) seconds

    Team bonus

Stated effect: Monastery works 20% faster. Actual effect: Monastery works 25% faster.

Quite a strong bonus, monks made in about 38 seconds instead of 50 as well as faster techs.

    • Frame delay

I noticed that the frame delay of ranged units appears to mostly be 3x previous, which makes sense since the game runs on 60 fps compared to 20 (at that I assume that is why). However, I noticed that some units don't have excatly 3x previous frame delay e.g longbows have 10 frame delay when they used to have 5.

    • Bulgarians

    • Konnik (melee cavalry UU which dismounts when killed) nothing too unexpected here, but it does have very good train rate given can make from krepost also. If you are thinking the attack rate is quite high see below.

train time: 19 seconds (both castle and krepost)

    speed: 1.35

attack rate: 1.9 (1.428 with Stirrups - same as Japanese Samuri)

attack bonus: none (dismounted has small bonus vvs buildings)

UT Stirrups - Yes, your konniks and scout line are attacking a bit faster than stated with this UT. Its a castle age tech too, and pretty cheap at 400f 200g.

Stated effect: Scout Cavalry line and Konniks attack 25% faster.

Actual effect: Scout Cavalry line and Konniks attack 33% faster.

    • Old civ/unit changes

Persians - new UT Kamandaran makes x-bow cost 50 wood (so only half gold cost goes into wood cost)

Mamelukes - as listed in the changelog, this unit has frame delay of 12 now (which is effectively less). It also takes 43 damage from halbs (both fully upped) which means they require 4 halb hits to go down instead of 3.

There may well be things I have missed, and its possible I have made some errors - but I will leave that to people more dedicated to such things, cheers.

    Counter Konniks

    Posted: 16 Nov 2019 02:42 AM PST

How do you do it? Pikes work like shit on them (1 konnik @130hp can easily do a 1v2) , they trash buildings like gods, and monks can't keep up with that damn speed. Don't tell me that the counter is not letting your opponent get them bco that's bullshit some times you simply can't block castle age. Wall them out then? - No that does not work as your opponent can drop a cheap *** kreposts just outside your walls and *** you anyway. Camel's might be a good idea but there's a lot of civs that don't get them. So how do we counter these things??
