Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 8 Week 2: Teutons vs Vikings

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 03:13 PM PST

From on location at NAC3!.... well, technically my hotel 11

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Aztecs vs Cumans, and next up is the Teutons vs Vikings!

    Teutons: Infantry Defensive civilization

    • Monks 2x healing range
    • Towers garrison 2x units; TCs garrison +10 units
    • Murder Holes, Herbal Medicine free
    • Farms cost -33%
    • TEAM BONUS: Units better resist conversion
    • Unique Unit: Teutonic Knight (DEUS VULT)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Ironclad (Siege Weapons +4/+0 armor)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Crenellations (Castles +2 range; garrisoned infantry fire arrows)

    Vikings: Infantry and Naval civilization

    • Warships cost -15% in Feudal and Castle Age, -20% in Imperial Age
    • Infantry +10/15/20% hp in Feudal/Castle/Imperial Age
    • Wheelbarrow and Hand Cart free
    • TEAM BONUS: Docks cost -15%
    • Unique Unit: Berserk (Heavy infantry that slowly regens hp)
    • Unique Unit: Longboat (Nimble galley-like warship that fires multiple arrows at once)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Chieftains (Infantry deal extra damage to cavalry)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Berserkergang (Berserks regen faster)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • A strange one for sure. On open maps like Arabia, Vikings are generally considered superior due to their (moderately) stronger eco bonus and streamlined gameplan of archers, infantry, and siege rams. Meanwhile, Teutons can struggle somewhat in the midgame without Thumb Ring or Husbandry; however, pound for pound their army is far superior to Vikings in the late game. Do Teutons have the tools they need to get there?
    • Gold Rush/Golden Pit is an interesting map to discuss these civs - Vikings can generally get a quick Castle Age time and go into xbows and have a strong eco. However, Teutons have a pretty strong eco game themselves, and the small area being contested makes their immobility less of an issue. Also, their defenses are top-tier for holding down the middle. All in all, which civ do you think is superior?
    • Uhhhh Vikings better on water maps and Teutons better on closed maps? Seems straightforward to me.

Thanks as always for participating! As I am currently one Atlantic Ocean away from my PC with all my info, I'll figure out next week's match up once I get back to university. Regardless, hope to see you there! :)

    NAC3 hooked me

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 06:33 AM PST

I had absolutely no idea that people still played this game! The other night I turned on Twitch and saw Trump, the old Hearthstone player, was playing Age of Empires and I was dumbfounded. I came in right as he was signing off and then I found NAC3, and I have been hooked since. I've tried to watch as much as I can around work and I have remembered how cool AoE is and RTS games in general are. My friends even gifted me the game on Steam cause I havent shut up about it.

This is kinda just me rambling here but man this is def going to be my game to watch and play for the foreseeable future. Really excited to see more tournaments in the future.

    Reconnect to disconnected multiplayer game

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 02:18 AM PST

Until they fix the random crashes (I've got modern hardware and it's still crashing out of the blue sometimes, although it's quite likely i'm a minority), there should be a mechanism to reconnect to an in-progress multiplayer game, after relaunching the game (when player drops temporarily pause with player dropped screen). i think it's either this, or fix the crashes completely (otherwise players will *quickly* get frustrated and abandon the game).

Very frustrating to play for 40 minutes and feel like it's a close game only to have it crash for no reason.

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 07:17 AM PST

    Hello everyone.

I have recently updated the Android App AoEII Data Base with all the new Definitive Edition Content. It includes all the new civs, units, buildings and techs stats, all the new balance changes, and all the icons and graphics are updated with the Definitive Edition ones.

For those who don't know this Android App yet, it is a full database of the game which includes:

    • Detailed information and stats for each unit, building, technology and civilization.
    • A complete tech tree similar to the ingame one.
    • Description of some interesting game mechanics.
    • A miscellaneous section with cheat codes, taunts, and the history section of the game.
    • A quiz mode, with 6 different quizes, to practice your knowledge about the game data.

The App is completely free and has no ads.

If you are interested, here is the link to download the App from Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aoedb

Visible Corpses mod has been released

Visible Corpses mod has been released

Makes dead units visible for 5 ingame minutes instead of fully sinking into ground. This way battlefields will be littered with corpses telling a brutal story of what happened there. Is not a data mod, so works everywhere without affecting other players - standard game, multiplayer, campaigns, replays.

I can’t even beat the AI on Moderate! Can someone give me some tips?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 05:45 AM PST

    Hey all,

I've just recently picked this game up again after having not played it for 15+ years.

I'm terrible! I'm sure I was better than this when I was a kid - or maybe I just played it on Easy!

I played a 2v2 (3x AI) and I seem to fall behind everyone with the age progression. I ended up walling myself in and getting reamed with Arbalests and all sorts. I played Britons - must be bias - and couldn't even keep up.

I'm sure it was easier than this! Can anyone give me any help? Thanks.

    Hello world

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 04:51 AM PST

Hi r/aoe2, I know this isn't your traditional Reddit post but I have no friends who share my love of this game so I thought I would come to you guys.

In short, I am thinking about making a short series on aoe2 where I basically do a short review of each of the single player campaigns from a casual players perspective, going over various details and rating them based on stuff like.

Difficulty Map design quest design (where applicable) Overall campaign strength, Aesthetics AI

I also think I wanna do a segment where I basically show off the map, the ai bases (for the original aesthetic before the ai builds all over them) and give a few easy tips here and there and basically my general thoughts on each map before giving a summary

It would be done by campaign basis (so all of the Joan campaign for example) and I am imagening the videos being between 10-20 minutes depending on the size of the campaign

Reason I'm posting this is because I want to know, would people be interested in such a series? And if so is there anything in particular you would like to see from a single player campaign review?

    Good/best Arena civs?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 04:08 AM PST

The strong Arabia civs are pretty well established, but Arena is a different story. What civs do most people prefer there besides the usual Aztecs? I know wich ones are strong but in no real order whatsoever

    List of differences per difficulty-level

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 03:04 AM PST

Is there some sort of list between the differences in the difficulty-levels?

I noticed from playing against Moderate and Hard that there's quite the spike.

I think both limit themselves to a certain amount of workers and units and the limit on moderate is low enough for me to be able to beat it, whereas the limit on hard is not. But I don't have the numbers.

Maybe there's also some sort of file where I can tweak them to customize the difficulty?

    Troll player intentional Desynced Game?

    Troll player intentional Desynced Game?

    Hey all,

I had this asshole (with the oh-so-charming screen name "nijjer") against me in a 1v1 in DE. He TC dropped, I beat it back, wrecked his shit with Mangonels, geared up for the inevitable chase after his hidden vills across the map and then.....

    GAME HAS DESYNCED

This is all he had on the map at the time of the convenient \"desync\".

Seriously!!?!?! Can asshole troll players intentionally cause this to happen? Has anyone else run into something like this in ranked? I'm curious.

What can I do After Fast Castle strategy?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 09:37 PM PST

    Hey Everyone!

Recently I've been trying to improve at the game because I want to play with my friends but they are a level above me and I struggle on their game difficulty.

I followed this guide for the Fast Castle strategy.

It has notes on what to do after and they seem to help but wanted to know what else could help me.

    Things/Questions I wanted to know

    • Extended Build order (if there can be one)
    • Best defense tactics (Castle/Tower near TC, or anything like that)
    • Is there any building I can rush that would help me most in the long run, and what would be the min I'd need to achieve that.
    • What is a balanced economy look like? percentage wise, do I need more of one resource than another or should it be even

I am currently on struggling but doing ok in 1v1 against moderate difficulty, and my friends are playing Hard difficulty. Thank you!
