    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 05:40 AM PST

Hi, I'm a rts fan (played company of heroes series, broodwar and starcraft 2 (competitively), command and conquer, and warcraft 3) I'm looking for another rts series that is still well populated and has enjoyable multiplayer. Does this game AoE2 fit this criteria?

Sorry for bad english and stuffs, I'm in a rush rn.

Edit: removed diehard cuz I haven't played aoe :(

How much time has to pass that it's okay to continue a game after the enemy paused and said "brb 1min" ?

And I didn't see the Berbers grabbed once. Are they really that far down on the list, or are the other civs just better? It seems like their eco bonus + cheap stable units would make them desirable.

What am I potentially missing here?

Possibly terrible Elephant archer buff idea

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 06:50 AM PST

Would it be broken if they had +3 or 4 bonus against archers? This would also mean they would do bonus damage against skirms which might not be a terrible idea because right now they perform terribly against all three trash units

    Best Battle Elephant civ?

Hi guys. Is it commonly known or probably someone figured out what civ's Battle Elephants are performing better? There is a variety of bonuses, which one is the best?

    Berbers vs Vikings on arena

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 05:10 AM PST

    Hi guys

Looking for some advice on Berber vs Viking matchup on arena.

Do Berbers have any answer to Viking late game Arbalest+siege ram, mixing in Berserks? Is cavalier+skirm+onager the best answer assuming relics are even?

Is it risky to go for a monk+siege push when Viking castle economy is so strong with free hand cart?

What's the best way to play out this matchup?

Been playing this game for 20 years

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 01:19 PM PST

Picked up DE last week. Loving the changes they made. Here's a few of my favourites, feel free to add yours:

Auto reseed farms AND fish traps. I now have a reason to use fish traps.

When attacking a building, front rank envelops the building and the back rank hits the front. Saves on bumping time.

Setting a TC gather point on a sheep that is no longer there as the other villagers have moved on to the next one. New villagers will prioritise the sheep being gathered from.

Shift clicking tasks like monks to pick up and run, villager build orders, etc. Can never remember where I sent those monks.

AI trickling troops towards a defensive position, realising it's a bad idea and having them back off until they have a decent number and advancing in force.

Forgotten campaigns being fully voiced instead of that text pop up.

Sticking a discount on it if you already had HD. That's how you do good business. People are more likely to reach out if you have your hand out halfway (then again it is windows 10 only so... we'll call it even).

20 years. And they still come back to add tweaks here and there. That's some real commitment. Props to all those involved.

Qualification predictions for Hidden Cup 3

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 08:05 PM PST

Absolutely pumped for this tournament! So please to see such support for this great game, between this and NAC3 this year is starting out on the right foot.

8 players confirmed (Hera, Liereyy, MbL, TaToH, TheMax, TheViper, Vivi and Yo)

8 spots available to qualifiers. Who do you think will make it through?

Obviously Daut and Nicov are big favourites, and based on NAC3 Villese and Lannn (Antagonist) are in fine form, as are Dogao and Fire. Rounding it out I think BacT and Lyx are good chances, maybe Jordan as well if he's gotten a copy of DE by now.

I am curious, is there anyone I've overlooked, or are there wild cards you'd love to see qualify?

Is there a reason I shouldn't go up on 20 pop?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 10:21 PM PST

So I've gotten kinda used to going up to feudal on 20 pop.

I've been focusing on Teutons, mostly because I'm a noob and figured I should just pick a civ and stick with it until I get a bit better. Anyway, generally I put 7 vills on sheep, then 2 on wood, then a few on berries, then kinda move stuff around depending on whether I've got boar or not. I typically have 11 on my boar, then shift them back to 7 on sheep and send the rest to wood.

Anyways, I've gotten pretty good at getting to 500 food just as I hit 20 pop, usually with no more than 5 seconds or so of waiting. I go up at about 6.5 minutes, then, with 4 on wood for a while at that point, I build a house and a barracks at about 50% to Feudal, finish just before I hit feudal, build a stable immediately, build 4 scouts, get double bit axe and horse collar, and transition into farms as I get enough wood.

This works pretty well for me. I can beat the hard AI consistently at this point. However, I've seen that most people tend to go up at something like 22 pop, and often as late as 26 or higher. To me this seems strange, as you have to spend quite a bit of wood and time making an extra house just for 2 more units.

Am I doing something wrong here? It feels like it makes the most sense to go up earlier, pressure the other player, and if I play well, I typically keep them from going (past) feudal until I have knights, and after that it's pretty much GG.

As far as I can tell, I'm never particularly squeezed for resources, either, the only point in question is whether I have to wait a few seconds before placing my stable, but other than that my main limitation is my ability to multitask. I'm guessing the Teuton cheap farms bonus is probably helping me to execute this strategy.

Basically, I'm wondering under what circumstances I'd even bother going up with a higher pop than that. I've not got any problems sustaining villager production or going up to castle in relatively short order, so what am I missing out on? Even if I found my enemy had fully walled themselves, I feel like I could just skip the scouts and rush myself up to castle asap.

But like I said, I'm pretty new. Is there some way this could come back to bite me in the butt? All advice welcome!

    AOE2DE Scenario Editor question

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 08:09 AM PST

For the past few days I've entertained the idea of making a mirrored map where me & my friend can enjoy some 1v1s without having to deal with the randomness of random maps.

So yesterday I decided to build said map, but I run into a problem I didn't expect. How to let civilizations keep their unique start? For example the Chinese start with extra vills and less resources, others have an eagle scout instead of scout cav, others start with extra resources, etc.

    Any help would be appreciated

[PSA] If you are getting the Signing into multiplayer services message but your internet is fine - then it's Windows which is causing the problem

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 07:23 AM PST

Long story short - my internet was just fine - steam was working - other games were working. But not Aoe2 DE. I got that message again and again today.

So after exhausting all other options [including fully reinstalling not only AoE but also steam when the first option had zero effect] I turned my attention to windows. Namely widows defender - the one and only. And then I realized that just about when my AoE problems had started earlier today windows defender had a small update which did something - what exactly? I have no idea. But I had a feeling it was the culprit.

And sure enough after disabling windows defender and then re-enabling it [but with the smart screen options set to off of course] and after resetting my windows firewall settings to default [and re-allowing aoe access when launched from steam] all of a sudden all of my AoE connection problems went away.

I mean it's funny because it's Microsoft but then again it's not funny because as I said all my other games worked just fine - so did my internet in general. But not AoE.

So if any of you have any trouble with this in the future check Microsoft's Windows Defender and Firewall first before doing anything else.

Glaring mistake in the profile icon

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 06:43 AM PST

So I've been playing a lot of Black Forest with my friends, one of whom loves to sling resources. So I told him yesterday, "Hey man you should change your icon to Slinger because you like slinging so much", clever right?

Well it wasn't because apparently THERE IS NO SLINGER ICON which I presume was an honest mistake by the devs please add as soon as possible, thanks.

Genitour, Elite Skirms, and Imperial Camel would be appreciated too but most Slinger.

    The King's Gamble

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 09:55 PM PST

Villager strolls along the streets of a bustling town with his trusty steed, he comes across a Market and a Merchant. After taking a look at his stock there is only one obvious purchase to make, lottery scratchcards - The King's Gamble. The Villager refers to the Merchant with interest of buying one. Then taunt 5 plays as a response, followed up by tribute sound and notification of the transaction.

Scene swap, a Donkey heaves in the lottery ticket from the left-hand side of screen. A fabulous glittering and golden marvel to behold. A King and a Castle can be spotted on the top left of it, under it a text with "EVERY THIRD WINS" and "GET FOUR OF THE SAME IN ROW TO WIN" with "JACKPOT FOR FIVE IN ROW". Scratchcard gets scratched and what do you know, as expected - four Trebuchets in row. Taunt 23 plays.

Scene swap, the Donkey takes it back to the bustling town. The Villager hands over the ticket, out of nowhere four Trebuchets spawn one by one and move behind their new master.

    Sharp scene swap to:
