Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 8 Week 4: Mongols vs Slavs

    Posted: 21 Jan 2020 09:49 PM PST

    Subotai sends his regards

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Japanese vs Lithuanians, and next up is the Mongols vs Slavs!

    Mongols: Cavalry Archer civilization

    • Cavalry Archers fire +20% faster
    • Light Cav, Hussar +30% hp
    • Hunters work +50% faster
    • TEAM BONUS: Scout-line +2 LoS
    • Unique Unit: Mangudai (Really strong cav archer)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Nomads (Lost houses do not decrease pop limit)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Drill (Siege Workshop units move +50% faster

    Slavs: Infantry and Siege civilization

    • Farmers work +10% faster
    • Supplies free
    • Siege Workshop units cost -15%
    • TEAM BONUS: Military buildings provide +5 pop space
    • Unique Unit: Boyar (Heavily armored cavalry)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Orthodoxy (Monks +3/+3 armor)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Druzhina (Infantry deal 5 trample damage)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • For your 1v1 open maps, (assuming there isn't extra hunt) both civs strike me as very good, but not quite at that top-tier level. Mongols are going to have the much faster start, but are going to fizzle out in the midgame just as the Slavs eco starts really kicking in. By lategame, both have incredibly deadly armies. Can Mongols consistently get enough damage done before Slavs overwhelm them?
    • On specifically Black Forest team games, both of these civs are incredibly strong due to their amazing late game potential. Slavs have infantry that has a field day in tight corridors, plus an incredible boom and cheap siege. Mongols have the option of striking very fast, but also have one of the scariest support units in the game, the Mangudai, as well as speedy siege. Which civ is stronger overall here?

Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Goths vs Italians. Hope to see you there! :)

    Are Teutons just worse Slavs?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 05:38 AM PST

Going through the tech trees of both civs and looking at their economic bony they are quite similar. Both are listed as infantry civs (Slavs also as siege civ) but looking at their bony it's quite apparent that they share many similarities.

Both have a farming bonus of some kind, with the Slav bonus outclassing the Teuton bonus especially when the boom is running. Both have really strong Monks. Slavs only lack Heresy but get +3/3 armor as unique tech, Teutons have FU monks with bigger healing range. Both civs don't have Arbalests and lack Bracers (both also get Cav-Archers and Slavs even heavy but lack most crucial upgrades for that unit). Because of that both civs have weak scrims. Both Civs have strong Infantry. With Druzhina the Slavs halberdiers and champions become 2 off the best trash slayers in the game and especially the halbs that beat most other halbs in big number combats are strong and the Teutons having FU halbs/champs + the Teutonic Knight that is unmatched in melee combat yet slow. Both civs get a strong Knight "like" unit. Teutons get Paladins FU only lacking Husbandry, Slavs get a own UU that is a Teutonic Knight on a horse. Both are decent Units. Both also have excellent Siege with Slavs having cheaper siege and Teutons having harder to kill Siege.

The biggest difference in the lategame is that Teutons get Gunpowder and more defensive stuff but completely lack the Light Cav upgrade. The Slavs have no access to Gunpowder and are way less equipped to defend them self, but their shared bony are often stronger (Farming is stronger, Druzhina infantry is stronger as FU infantery + Teutonic Knights, Lacking Paladin is offset by having access to the Bolvar and Hussar, Cheaper Siege is better as having a really expensive unique technology that increases melee armor)

So the only real Bonus that Teutons have Gunpowder and better defensive castles/TCs. But looking at stats this things don't make up for the other things that Teutons do worse as Slavs. It feels like especially when Gold is sparse, you defend yourself to only run out of gold as Teutons and suddenly have a pretty underwhelming Trash composition that badly misses a strong Hussar, while Slavs if they reach that post imperial age have cheaper Siege to mix to their Trash, amazing Halbs and FU hussars to snipe enemy Siege and counter enemy Scrims.

Yeah Bombard Cannons and Hand cannons are nice tools but lacking strong trash options as meat shield or for the post imperial age makes them weaker compared to what Slavs have to offer.

The Slavs can also use their threads better in a aggressive faction, since they can use their farming bonus also to go for scouts early without getting punished for it (by a non upgradable unit). Their Knights in Castle Age are faster as the Knights from Teutons and because of the Bolvar and Hussar they have a nice unite to transition into with their upgrades made for them (while Paladin and armor upgrades for cav are not doing anything when gold runs out).

I would even argue that Druzhina Champions are better to have as Teutonic Knights, because they are cheaper (especially with supplies) and more easy to build and also work really well in big number fights. They also walk much faster so they are not as hard countered by food archers and for example still reach scrims compared to the Teutonic Knight.

And their niche of countering Monks with hard to convert units is also limited since the lack the Light Cav upgrade. Meaning in Monk + Light Cav fights they are not even that ahead...

TLDR: Teutons the defensive civ, defends great but unlike the Slavs that share many strengths (Infantery, Monks, Great Heavy cav) their trash is lacking hard behind (especially the Scout line). This feels like they defend to lose and not to win.

Maybe I'm completely missing something, but looking at aoestats it also seems like Slavs do most things better as Teutons with a pretty similar win rate curve just a few % better.

BBC deal triple the damage vs TCs as of latest patch

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 12:53 AM PST

Bombard Cannons deal a lot of extra damage vs Town Centers (roughly triple the damage from usual), irrespective of having any upgrades like Siege Eng for your cannons or Masonry upgrades for the TCs, making it so that BBC need about 3 shots to snipe a Town Center.

Other buildings seem fine, it's just Town Centers that for some reason take 3 hits to be sniped.

    Hi,

This Google Sheet https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1GiYnqQ0bDGMauKtjn6-TlQD3PRmy6iUudGNOSzo50Ck/edit#gid=923437645 was very convenient. Unfortunately it was put in private. I've applied for access for several days but still nothing. If the owner of the document passes by I would like to tell him that it was super convenient and that I would like to consult it again!

    Any replays/videos of regicide snipes?

    In this game:

    https://youtu.be/dRLht_apjOw?t=2205

Blue is behind in a regecide and tries to steal the win with an assassination.

Does anyone have any links to situations where this is successful? Where a player is very far behind but wins with an assassination?
