Rams in their current state in AoE2 DE

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 08:11 PM PST

Probably not that impressive to most, but I managed this and was super proud. First time “quick walling”.

Played a game as the Portuguese and noticed I could build a feitoria with 197/200 and managed for some reason surpass the housing limit

    25 Pop

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 04:27 AM PST

was bored and had 30 mins to play so I put the AI to extreme and capped pop at 25. I won, but being honest the AI can't cope, even at extreme - it doesn't really produce military. My meta was an all in fast castle where I just deleted all the villagers and rushed with 25 upgraded longswordsmen from one barracks. Has anyone else played small pop cap games with a human? what would be your meta?

When you convert an army of monks and make even more monks to eventually have a surplus of monks for all monk related purposes.

    Japanese Language Streamers

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 05:53 AM PST

Longtime single player player here, and while I have only made half-hearted attempts to get into multiplayer, the fact that DE is a little bit beyond my computer's specs has left me in HD. However, I have started to watch more than just T90 youtube uploads and I instead now also follow quite a few streamers on Twitch. But I am also studying Japanese, and I was wondering if there are active, preferably talkative and high-level Japanese streamers out there - platform does not really matter.

Similarly, being Dutch, I might as well catch two birds with one stone and ask if there are any Dutch high-level players/streamers out there, because you know how patriotic people get in (e-)sports :P. I know a few names, I just don't happen to know any who actively stream.

Why do some people build ZERO military?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 07:18 AM PST

Just played a game where it was basically 3v2, the other guy just did like 50 farms and trade carts

Like what, is this Sim City Medieval Edition? No it's a military game where you KILL your enemies

Even early a few 10 horses can be a great help. Please don't be the city builder guy

Would you consider the Italians overall better than they were in the originals?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 10:03 PM PST

Just wondering because I know they were not the best 1v1, but I asking if DE gave them some good buffs in this one.

How do you kill sheep with your scout? (DE)

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 06:11 AM PST

Hi, I have had a couple of games where I have been careless with my heardables and an enemy scout has come and killed them. I was wondering what buttons/command you would press to kill the sheep and what criteria you need to meet to kill the sheep with the scout, because when I try my scout doesn't kill them. Thanks!

    How to improve? (1v1/2v2)

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 08:44 AM PST

Hey all, pretty new to AoE2, played as a young kid but just against ai and what not, and just returned.

I am really struggling with getting better - obviously I just need more practice, but when we play 2v2 ranked at 1200 points, it just feels insane, every game the other 2 players just seem like they are in a complete different skill zone, early pushes with lots of units, building inside my base, tower rushes, then the game ends and their economy is 1000x better than mine, they have built across the entire map, etc.

I just don't feel like I am playing against people who are even remotely in our skill zone, but it's not like we won a bunch of games and ended up in a higher point bracket than we should, we lose most games, the other players just don't feel new AT ALL.

I have tried the build order helpers and stuff, and I feel at least somewhat okay with my start -> feudal time, it gets a bit messier from there but every game I can't focus on building my base correctly or etc., because someone is always pushing my shit in.

Map editor start positions and racial bonus

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 07:21 AM PST

    Hey,

have a question about the aoe2 map editor:

Can you set a start position for a player and still have the starting bonus of a faction?

Like for example if there is a map where I start with a town center and 3 villagers and I pick the Chinese, I still only got these 3 villagers.

Why do so many players clump into the rating level known as intermediate, and never improve beyond intermediate once they reach intermediate skill level?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 08:17 PM PST

Is there like a bell curve distribution of people's maximum skill levels, and if so, why do so many people seem to clump at such a level?

    Unloading units on ship- bug???

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 02:59 AM PST

I've been experiencing this issue, and I'm sure others must of noticed it too. If you have a transport ship full of units, and you want to unload them on land. If you use a mouse, the transport ship, will unload units where you right click. But if you use the unload hotkey, the transport ship dumps the units in a random location, different to where you right clicked. It's really frustrating, and I cant be bothered with using the hotkey anymore. Is this going to be fixed?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 05:26 AM PST

I don't really use onagers, because trebs are clearly the superior siege weapon, but I'm wondering where I'm at for the Mango Shots achievement. And I can't be far off from Wololo either. Can I view my progress anywhere?

Do you know what really grinds my gears?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 04:48 PM PST

Firstly, I love the game play itself. This post is about all those little things. Things that wouldn't require much effort to fix / implement.

1/ No way to view the tech tree while waiting in the matchmaking (ranked) lobby. Not only do we have ~10 min waiting times (4v4 games), but we can't even check the tech tree to pass time. Surely this would be a simple fix? It boggles my mind that this wasn't implemented.

2/ No way to view the other tabs while waiting for a match in the matchmaking (ranked)lobby. ELO rank means nothing to me. I rarely bother checking the tab, because I can't.

3/ ELO not available in the matchmaking (ranked) lobby. WTF

4/ Opponents ELO is never revealed. I can only estimate based on the +/- points swing from winning/losing, and their skill.

5/ Map ban limits change for 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 why??????????? Personally, I hate islands (as did all my team mates) yet we were forced to play one. The ban/map ratio for 1v1 should be fore all matchups.

6/ This one's not critical, but it's annoying that more features like this don't exist. I would like to be able to select your own civ pool, i.e. Vikings, Mongols, Ethiopians, etc. which can be used for "custom random"

7/ Another nice to have would be more maps (with the same ban/map ratio). The 8 available quickly become repetitive. How about regicide? How about migration? AOE HD had so many types of maps (20+). I can tell you that I never experienced the same map-boredom with HD as I do now with DE.

8/ Another nice to have would be matchmaking progress (for > 1v1).... are we 4 players away from a game, or 1 player?

9/ Why isn't the lobby browser optionally ranked like it was before? I don't understand.

10/ Black forest with revealed map makes me cringe so hard that I have to use a ban on it. why bother giving a scout? The map pool should have another black forest - not revealed...

Scania RP: a new multiplayer diplomacy map in the works

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 05:02 AM PST

Scania RP: a new multiplayer diplomacy map in the works

    Danish Neo-Vikings amassing on Bornholm

    ABOUT THE SCENARIO:

It's the year 20xx and there is war once more in the Baltic Sea! The small region of Scania becomes an international battleground as anarchy spreads throughout the land, and every military power in the area wants a piece of the cake. Take charge of one of eight factions in this role-playing diplomacy map! Forge temporary alliances to forward your goals, and fight your way across a detailed landscape inspired by real life locations: play as Denmark, to regain control of the eastern half of the kingdom lost over 300 years ago; or as Russia's invasion force, seeking control of the area; or as one of the newly formed Scanian city states, seeking retribution for old grudges against each other!

This is a multiplayer diplomacy/RP scenario, set on a giant map and made exclusively for Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition. Each player has unique victory conditions and only one can win in the end, meaning all alliances will be temporary and every player needs to consider their long-term strategy to be able to win.

    Russian invaders!

    BACKGROUND:

This was originally meant to be a hastily put together map for a multiplayer game between me and a bunch of friends, hence the somewhat ridiculous plot and setting. It quickly ended up being a much bigger project, though, and I decided to create two versions: one personal, and one for public release - which is this one!

    Overgrown ruins

    THE PLAYERS AND THEIR OBJECTIVES:

Player 1: Bornholm**; Vikings:** Danish rebels have taken control of the easternmost province of Denmark, located just south-east of Scania. These modern day Vikings seek to throw all Swedish invaders out of the old Danish provice of Scania, as well as retain their independence from the decadent Danish government to the west. To do this they aim to conquer the cities of Malmö, Kristianstad and Helsingborg, gather 5 cultural treasures (relics) and control the Viking era burial grounds at Ale's Stones.

Player 2: Denmark; Spanish: the Danish government wants to use the chaos across the Öresund Strait to reclaim the region, which they lost in the shameful Treaty of Roskilde in 1658. They also seek to bring Bornholm back into the fold, as well as stay in control of the vital Öresund Bridge connecting their lands to the eastern region.

Player 3: Kristianstad; Britons: this city state in the woodland region of Göinge wants nothing to do with the rest of the world. If they get what they want, Scania will become its own country; the bridge to the continent will be demolished, as will the ghastly Halland Ridge Tunnel still controlled by Sweden. They, too, seek to control the culturally important burial grounds of Ale's Stones.

Player 4: Markaryd; Celts: in the deep woods north of Scania, the town of Markaryd has taken advantage of the anarchy in the south to declare itself independent. They too seek control of the region, but they focus on collecting relics and constructing defensive bunkers (Wonders) in the various cities - whether these cities want to or not! They also see the Russian invaders as mortal enemies.

Player 5: Russian Invaders; Slavs: the opportunistic leaders in the great country in the east see an opportunity to expand into western Europe, and they are not afraid to act on it. Their primary goal is to shut out the other local powers by demolishing the Öresund Bridge and Halland Ridge Tunnel, as well as controlling the strategically important locations of Bornholm, Malmö and Karlshamn in the east.

Player 6: Malmö; Franks: the most populous city state, located at the eastern end of the Öresund Bridge, this city state desperately needs to feed its population. To do this they must control and work the fertile farmlands of the south, as well as wrest control of the bridge from the Danes. Finally, they are taking this opportunity to destroy their age-old rivals to the north: the town of Helsingborg.

Player 7: Helsingborg; Portuguese: this northern trading town sees the war as an unnecessary disruption of trade more than anything. They seek a new stable situation by capturing the Danish town of Helsingör across the sea, ensuring that the Öresund Bridge remains standing - as well as keeping the gold from trade flowing and amassing 50,000 or more of it. Lastly, they want to settle an old grudge they have with Malmö, whose football team have so often shamed them in the league.

Player 8: Sweden; Lithuanians: lastly we have the Swedish, caught off guard and unprepared for war. They are sending in troops through the Halland Ridge Tunnel in the west, while their economic heart lies to the east; a precarious starting position. They seek nothing more than to regain control of the region and to take over the bridge over the Öresund Strait.

(Some liberties have obviously been taken in the civilization choices here, because it would be quite boring with 7 Viking players and 1 Slav. :P)

    Danish castle

    PROGRESS:

    Map design: 75%
    Triggers: 40%
    Instructions & miscellaneous stuff: 0%
    Total: 65% *

\ No exaggeration, I would have been finished a week ago if it wasn't for the lag that happens in the editor on maps this size. :P)

More screenshots and stuff can be found in the project thread over at Age of Kings Heaven! If you want to help playtest this once it's finished, that is also where you can sign up! https://aok.heavengames.com/cgi-bin/forums/display.cgi?action=ct&f=4,44683,,10

The best civs for unlimited map resources(excluding food)scenarios

    Cavalry archer Samurai?!

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 09:27 PM PST

In medieval Japan Samurai were also skilled in horseback archery.

Wouldn't it be super-cool if: Samurai started off as a Cavalry Archer and upon "dieing" they would dismount and fight as a melee Samurai. Akin to the Konnick.

    • Technically it should be possible in DE
    • thematically/historically it would fit
    • Current Samurai is too similar to Champions
    • Balance-wise Japanese could use (but don't need) a power unit.

I imagine this to be a slower but tankier Cavalry Archer and (uniquely) costing wood, food AND gold, I suppose the bonus damage to unique units could be dropped or reduced. Another thematic/balance option would be that the infantry version commits seppuku (ritual suicide) if he is not killed after a time.

Let's not get into specific stats and costs.

I know this will never happen, but one can only dream...
