In-depth Analysis of Infantry vs Eagles

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 01:31 AM PST

Population efficiency: how good is the unit at killing another unit (cost ignored)

Gold efficiency: how good is the unit at killing other units (cost accounted for; food traded for gold at a bottomed-out market)

Cost efficiency: how good is the unit at killing other units (cost accounted for; gold is not scarce (i.e. gold is as valuable as food))

Pop efficiency, gold efficiency, and cost efficiency of Eagles vs Infantry

    Champs

Champs are the most gold efficient infantry unit vs Eagles (other than the ETK, which won't be considered due to its slow speed).

Eagle attacking Champ (defence): Bulgarian 2HS > Viking Champ > FU Champ > Champ missing PMA > FU 2HS

Champ attacking Eagle (offence): Jap Champ > Aztec Champ = Burmese Champ > FU Champ = Champ missing BF = FU 2HS

I think it's important to stress that a FU Champ is as good as a Champ missing BF, and that a FU 2HS kills Eagles as fast as a FU Champ (although the 2HS is less tanky).

All 4 civs missing BF have Champs, and their Champs are missing no other techs.

Aztec and Burmese Champs are only better than generic when attacking Mayan Eagles - they kill Incan/Aztec eagles in 3 shots (just like FU Champs/2HS)

Persians is the only civ missing 2HS (they are limited to LSM).

    Pop efficiency: Bulgarian > Jap > Viking > Aztec = Burmese > Generic Champ > Generic 2HS

    Gold efficiency: Malay > Goth > Bulgarian > Jap > Viking > Burmese > Generic Champ > Aztec > Generic 2HS

    Cost efficiency: Bulgarian > Jap > Viking > Goth > Aztec = Burmese > Generic Champ > Generic 2HS

Not considered: Celts [FU, faster movement] and Slavs [FU, splash damage], both of which are very good.

    UUs

Best UUs: Woads (fast, gold/cost/pop efficient), Samurai/Jags/Berserks (faster than champs, gold/cost/pop efficient), Axemen/Kamayuks (ranged, faster than champs, gold/pop efficient), Karambits (fast, gold/pop efficient)

The only UU which isn't gold efficient is the Gbeto, but it is very fast (1.25 base) and ranged, so it might be viable.

UUs are more efficient when gold is limited than when it is not (i.e. UUs are more gold efficient than cost efficient)

FU e Jaguar Warriors deal 33 damage (before armour reductions) to FU Aztec Eagles, which results in the Jags 2-shoting the Eagles.

FU ETK can survive 100 hits against Incan/Mayan eagles and 25 against Aztec Eagles. The next tankiest is the Bulgarian 2HS which survives 12 and 7 hits respectively.

    Pop efficiency: ETK > Jag > Samurai > Berserk > Woad > Shotel = Huskarl > Axeman > Kamayuk > Gbeto > Karambit (doesn't account for taking up 1/2 a population space)

    Gold efficiency: ETK > Jag > Samurai > Berserk > Woad > Huskarl > Karambit > Shotel > Axeman > Kamayuk > Gbeto

    Cost efficiency: ETK > Jag > Samurai > Berserk > Woad > Huskarl > Shotel > Karambit > Axeman > Kamayuk > Gbeto

    Eagles

Mayans are the best vs infantry. Aztecs are 2nd best. The Incan UT lends itself to tanking arrow fire.

Units attaching Eagles (defence): Mayan > Incan > Aztec

Eagles attacking units (offence): Aztec > Incan/Mayan

Pop efficiency: Mayan > Aztec > Incan

Gold efficiency: Mayan > Aztec > Incan

Cost efficiency: Mayan > Aztec > Incan

    Halbs

Gold efficient but not cost/pop efficient.

Pop efficiency: Burmese > Jap > Aztec pike > generic > Goth > Viking pike

Gold efficiency: Goth > Burmese > Jap > Aztec pike > generic > Viking pike

Cost efficiency: Burmese > Jap > Aztec pike > generic > Goth > Viking pike

    Condos

Surprisingly efficient given that they have no bonus vs eagles. Generic condos are pop and gold efficient, but not cost efficient. They further benefit from the fact that they are fast, created from the barracks, and don't need to be upgrade from another unit.

Condos with bonuses (Jap, Aztec, Burmese, Goth, Viking) are almost always gold/cost/pop efficient.

Pop efficiency: Jap > Aztec > Burmese > Viking > Generic > Goth

Gold efficiency: Jap > Burmese > Aztec > Goth > Viking > Generic

Cost efficiency: Jap > Aztec > Burmese > Goth > Viking > Generic

I did not consider Lanchester's Laws in my calculations (i.e. all fights are 1v1; when a unit dies it's replaced with another).

Edit: eagles attacking units, and units attacking eagles. This basically shows the number of hits an eagle needs to kill a unit, and a unit needs to kill an eagle. It also shows how much better Aztecs, Mayans, and Incas are vs their competitors.

Old thread reboot: Name your top 5 noob civs

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 01:45 AM PST

So I'm a noob and I have plunged deep into the subreddit over the past couple of months as I've been learning the game. Most of my searching has been for noob friendly civs so I don't learn any bad eco habits and the Byzantine/saracens are always top picks but I NEVER see India. If a big goal for the new player is to keep their TC constantly busy, would the Indians villager discount not be a great incentive? Sure the cheaper villagers is a food crutch but it also compensates for a newer players inefficiency. Most of the time I play random but if I get into a noob game in the customs lobby then it's usually an all pick. Thanks for any input or advice!

Anyone else completely one-dimensional? What's your go-to strategy?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 06:13 AM PST

Tower rushing with incas - 1100 elo, having a lot of fun

Man at arms rush with bulgarians or basically any other strategy with any other civ - 10 elo, raging constantly

Anyone else stuck in one type of playstyle/one civ?

Vietnamese Idea: Military Buildings cost -75 wood.

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 01:10 AM PST

If you look at their stats, the Vietnamese are weakest in the early game, improve a bit into Feudal(probably for archer rushes), then decline over Castle age and then spike back up towards late Imperial(probably due to their extremely good archer trash).

This clearly indicates that where they need help is in the beginning of the game. Improve them there, and the effects will snowball out over the rest of the game.

Reducing the cost of Stables, Archery Ranges, and Barracks, would save them about as much wood as most common economy bonuses, assuming they built all three of them, and would incentivize early-game aggression as well, helping them in the early-game area where they struggle. This would also nicely synergize with their knowledge of enemy player locations, as right now they don't really have a way to capitalize on that information.

I think it would pretty much completely solve their problems entirely.

Typing the number "31" is CENSORED

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 03:33 PM PST

At first I thought it was the taunt itself, but it is actually the number. Type in "hello 31" if you want to test it.

I am a fairly conservative person who doesn't like foul language, but when we start censoring NUMBERS I think we are a little bit off the rails!

The same is true for the digits 61 and 81. Even if you type a word with 61 in it, it will be censored. There has to be a space before the 3, 6, or 8 for this to work.

The villagers pathing while gathering resources is so much better. I didn't realize how much of my game play went towards checking villagers on res but after the update I realized I constantly check them to make sure they are working correctly. Good job Age team.
