Age of Empires II I think we can all agree this is a more important issue than tweaking civ bonuses. At this point a simple average of team elos would be better than the current system.

Interest in a mobile app for theory crafting/simulating build orders?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 07:57 AM PST

I'm thinking about making an app for android/iOS where you can make build orders and then run the simulation, to see what happens. Actually I have already started making the app. But before I go to far, I was wondering if there is any interest in an app like that.

The idea is that you tell every villager what to do in what order, and what to do in the town center/other buildings. Then the app will simulate the game (not perfectly, but close enough). So that you can get an idea of if the build is going to work, if there is enough resources to do X at time Y if you have Z villagers at wood etc.. That way you can quickly prototype different builds and make small changes to, without having to replay an actual game every time.

Chinese still the dominant Civ after two rounds of Hidden Cup 3 Qualifiers; Vikings, Franks, and Japanese rising; Spanish, Mongols, Berbers, and Slavs underperform

Chinese still the dominant Civ after two rounds of Hidden Cup 3 Qualifiers; Vikings, Franks, and Japanese rising; Spanish, Mongols, Berbers, and Slavs underperform

In comparison to Round 1 Civ Analysis we have almost twice as much data (by combining Round 1 and 2 matches). Chinese continue their dominating streak with additional wins on map Arabia and El Dorado, although the pilot did suffer one defeat to Mayans. Still can't complain about winning 8 out of 9 games, when player ELO suggested the wins to losses ratio was supposed to be equal.

Persians continue to be the most highly picked civ in non mirrors; however, the results only show a razor thin civ advantage, eating high profile losses to Japanese, Italians, and Aztecs respectively. The water power favored the Japanese and Italians even on hybrid maps, in particular, Italians used the Genoese Xbow to shut down Persia's cavalry.

The three Round 1 standouts were Chinese, Britons and Indians. Where are they now? It seems that players found ways to counter Indians on map Slopes, so it no longer shows any Civ Advantage. Britons on the other hand kept a Civ Advantage, although it shrunk after losing to Huns, Mayans, and Cumans.

Mayans continue to underperform in Round 2, however; the civ disadvantage seems to have shrunk a bit. They are still not quite at break even yet.

Slavs did not show up in Round 1 at all, but suddenly four players picked Slavs in Round 2. They were piloted by 2k+ elo players, too...but alas, only one win out of four games.

On the other hand, Franks continue to improve on their solid Round 1, with two additional wins in Round 2, dispatching Khmer on Arabia and Mayans on Gold Rush easily. If this continues then Franks might be on their way back to being a top tier civ in the meta, as pre-DE stats imply. Franks can be a simple civ that only focuses on cavalry, but they do it well. Sometimes, like versus Mayans...they also have Throwing Axemen. But how do Throwing Axemen counter Mayans? Basically, they kill Mayan Pikemen.

Japanese under performed in Round 1 but have recovered by Round 2. Why are Japanese so strong? Because they kept appearing in map Cup mirrors, and the water power delivered back-to-back wins in Cross and High Tide. High Tide as the name implies favors a civ with strong water bonuses, like faster working fishing ships with additional armor.

Spanish continue to be utter crap, without even a single win after 5 games (definitely the worst performing civ in HC3 Qual). Berbers were also lackluster when they were selected as surprise civpicks, only to fail to deliver twice in Round 2.

And a custom map with no castles (I.e. no unique units, no unique techs, no trebs) which civs would be the most hampered and which would thrive?

    Where/how do I play online?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 06:31 AM PST

Just bought DE a few weeks ago on Steam. I used to play HD on Steam, but I see a lot of stuff here and on Youtube about Voobly. Can I get an online game on Steam or do I need to figure out Voobly?

Also, can someone explain the xbox thing that pops up when I start the game?

Did newest patch break ai for anyone else?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 06:27 AM PST

Latest patch, the ai on hardest/extreme seems to be playing terrible. I've been getting easy wins with my friends. I've notice on hardest/extreme, the ai would sometimes get to feudal age at 15 mins with no pressure. Anyone notice that they are way easier?

Sudden crashing to desktop on DE :( any fixes?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 02:30 AM PST

Hi I just bought DE and im pretty dissapointed to see that sometimes it suddenly and seemingly randomly crashes to the desktop. Sometimes AOE freezes and never recovers, other times it just closes and immediately shows my desktop. It can be during the loading screen or mid way through a game.

    Does anyone know a fix?

    Matchmaking

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 04:34 AM PST

    I was wondering -

How exactly is matchmaking implemented in AOE2:DE?

What are some other ways to implement matchmaking?

Why exactly does it take so long?

    1v1 matchmaking vs 4v4 matchmaking?

What is there left to buff?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 11:34 PM PST

After the last patch, a few "underpowered" civs \)^(cough goths cough\)* got some attention. So i ask you now, what civs are left that need some attention? IMO tatars, turks and teutons (yes, still) could use some love. What buffs (not just civs but units or techs too) do you guys want to see happen?

    How to deal with Monks

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 05:37 PM PST

So earlier this night I was playing as franks on goldpit, my enemy was persian and he seemed to know that I would go for knights. while our uptimes were similar he immediately rushed to the gold and TC droped there while spamming his own knights and monks (meanwhile I was playing it safe and building up a force, TC booming in my base).

I did not expect persian knights which is why I had no immediate answer to his units. quickly I realised that I could not push with my knights against his army (he converted many), nor did my pikes help as he ran away under the safety of his castle fire as soon as I approached him. Archers did not help either.

after 40 mins of back and forth, I tabbed out as soon as he started trebbing down my defensive castles.

After that match I googled that the scout line is resistant against conversions, are scouts the units I should use against monks? What else could I have tried? onegers? though I believe my micro is too bad yet for that.

Usually what I do in situations like this is build a back door base right above or beneath the enemy base, hold with an army in the middle while the 2nd army is being built. then I´d engage and while he's dealing with the middle army and sending his reinforcement there I´d break into his base and kill his eco. However, I felt that this player had to much pressure on me and my units could not hold against him anyway.

I appreciate any advice thank you.

    Malay Elephant Drop

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 06:02 PM PST

With Malay's faster age up, is it viable to rush a super fast castle with normal villager times (and therefore stunting your eco) in order to drop a forward Battle Elephant stable (while hopefully your opponent is still in Feudal age so they cant get Pikemen yet)? Or is that just never worth attempting

    LAG in DE

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 05:36 AM PST

Is it normal to lag in DE? Even in 1v1 games? Every game, even in 1v1, the game starts to slow down, then it freezes and then accelerates, and so on. Is this my pc connection or performance?
