    dogao AoE Coaching Program

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 03:23 PM PDT

Hey guys, now with the Hidden Cup 3 being over, and with the COVID-19 around I have lots of free time and I'm opening spots for people who are interested in getting better at the game.

Basically it's a program of 10 hours where you will be coached by me in diverses aspects of the game for a price of 100 USD.

It can be done in Voobly, Steam with the HD version or in the Definitive Edition, the program is the same for all versions of the game.

In this Link you can find some feedbacks from people that already made it and some discussions regarding paying someone to teach you AoE.

If you are interested and want to know how it works, please send me a PM here.

    Thank you!

Hidden Cup 3 Civ League (Analysis and Stats!)

    Posted: 23 Mar 2020 02:40 AM PDT

Hidden Cup 3 Civ League (Analysis and Stats!)

In my last report from the Hidden Cup 3 Civ League, all games have been played, and there is one undisputed winner - Chinese. Chinese won 14 out of 15 games across mainly Arabia and El Dorado, but also a pickup on Hideout (vs Spanish) and Ravines (vs Khmer). A standout performance for the flexible and boomy civ, delivering reliable wins against both weaker and stronger opponents.

Chinese were also the 4th highest picked civ, with pros recognizing the value of an early villager lead and the ability to tech across many options. Each chinese game typically began with a full wall into scouts but from then on, play diverges. Each win came in different slightly different ways - some used archers, some used knights, some used chu-ko-nu, and some used trash. But Age of Empires is a simple game, two players play for an hour, and in the end the Chinese win.

The Civ Advantage gained by picking Chinese was a jaw dropping +40% in Hidden Cup 3.

(This includes all Qualification Matches, Show Matches, Round of 16, Quarter Finals, Semi Finals, and Finals, a total of 378 civ picks for 189 games. Scroll all the way down for winners.)

    Other heavily picked civs:

Persians received a lot of attention due to their hybrid (land + water) strength and turbocharged vil production, strong cavalry and late trash xbows. But this did not translate into a Civ Advantage, the 56% winrate seeming to come from nothing but the pilot's own skill. This is still a pretty good winrate. But if you were a less skilled player picking Persians vs a better pro, odds are you will still lose. If you are a better player, then odds are you will win. We saw a few players releasing War Elephants with Persians in the Hidden Cup.

Mayans are another popular pick thanks to their archer advantages and longer lasting resources (known as the Mayan Privilege). But this privilege may be over because Mayans are at a slight Civ Disadvantage of -4%, delivering their owner more losses than wins, even when adjusted for ELO. So what are the problems for Mayans? A lack of mobility, rams, and El Dorado eagles take so long to mass properly.

Indians are a "specialty" pick you won't see in many other tournaments. But in Hidden Cup 3 they are the de facto best civ on map Slopes, with its Shore Fish. And the meta was correct - Indians brought home a respectable winrate of 64%, the third best performance after the Chinese (among the most popular 10 civs). Few pros even dared to contest the Indian pick, this map ended up having the highest number of mirror matchups, and whenever they strayed, they lost. It's the shore fishes, the camels, the Indian camel archers. Oddly enough, one of the few strategies to beat the Indians is to box them with Inca vils.

Japanese was another common pick because it has great land options, it also has great water options. So in the end their hybrid pilots must have been disappointed by the -6% civ disadvantage. What went wrong? Basically, this could just be an artifact of rounding. But also, they got waylaid by surprising offmeta strats by daring Celt and Viking pilots on their home maps.

Mongols should and do shine thanks to their early hunt bonus leading to lightning quick uptimes, and their uncounterable imperial stage Mangudai. Unfortunately, this led to their best map (Pants Bay) being nearly always Mongol mirrors, and pros seem to take Mongol mirrors for granted till they just don't handle it properly when someone shock picks Italians or Persians. Civ disadvantage -13%.

    Surprisingly popular civs:

Khmer have basically de-throned Britons on map Hideout and is it's new king. The boom into Scorpions counters the British booming into archers, and you can do sneaky cuts with the Ballista Elephant. (Regular battle elephants also make sense in some situations.) Aside from this, they are pretty mobile with their flexible farms supporting a knight rush. The actual winrate of Khmer is a modest 53%, but when adjusted for elo, they showed a +13% civ advantage. Khmer turned out to be a very good surprise weapon for weaker players to upstage better ones.

Vikings are not expected but were picked in large numbers. Their application was a "surprise weapon" on maps Arabia and Cup. This delivered some pretty stunning longboat + tower mastapieces and we even saw the underrated Elite Berserk. Vikings do have a strong economy but in the end, it's still a civ disadvantage -6%. A lack of power units in late Imperial, a feudal weakness to Fireships, but Vikings should not be disappointed - they are still playing roughly on par with Japanese and better than Mayans.

Celts are another surprise weapon, once again, for map Cup. The idea is to go m@a forward, tower some fish, and create massive chaos. Did this work? Well sometimes, sometimes it does, and then everyone thinks you are Max but you're actually Tatti. The lack of water bonuses means a player must continuously create chaos until late imp, when Celt Siege + Woad shines. This means Celts are slightly worse than vikings and it's a civ disadvantage of -13%.

Incas was once a flexible, multidimensional civ with options, but nowadays everyone just goes Yolo villagers and towers. The Noboru strat may have ruined the civ. Results are results though, can't argue with a civ advantage of +25%.

    Moderate wonders:

Aztecs delivered a thoroughly mediocre winrate of 50%, perfectly balanced, as all things should be.

Britons started out strong in the HC3 qualifiers but after repeat losses to Khmer they are now civ disadvantage -8%, the lack of mobility being a strong concern.

Nobody picked Huns in the main event, they only appeared in the qualifiers. Huns seem to be a "backup civ" only picked by pros to hide their real choices.

Same thing for Franks, no main event big time appearances, even though they scored an impressive 80% in the qualifiers. Pros just don't trust the berries to carry.

Italians, it's nearly always a mirror match on Islands. But sometimes, they can migrate to hybrid maps, and it turns out that despite being weak on land doesn't matter if you remain on water. No Civ advantage / disadvantage.

    The Bad and the Terrible:

If you go Spanish, thinking you can flood the map with Conqs, then you would have only won one single game in the entirety of Hidden Cup 3. Conqs proved to be too slow, hard to mass, and countered by Elite Skirmishers. Civ disadvantage -29%.

If you believed the T90 hype about Slavs, faster farming and all that, then you would have only won 2 games. Opposing civs will just shut you down with their even stronger boom. Slavs also have nothing to help on water, which is bad for HC3's many hybrid maps. Civ disadvantage -33%.

Other Civs were barely even picked to be of any consequence to the league at all

So is there any reason to still buy HD even though DE is here.

    Posted: 23 Mar 2020 07:01 AM PDT

-HD with all the expansions costs over 50 usd.

-The vannilla game costs 20 usd

-graphics are the same as CD version just in higher resolution.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-DE has 3d models and enhanced graphics

-DE costs 20 usd with all expansions + new civs.

    -Has a bigger playerbase already.

    -New civ technologies and balances.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The only reason to buy HD is for the nostalgic graphics and some mods other than that I dont see a reason to buy it. Especially if it wasnt that for the high price to get the whole game with all dlcs. Im not saying HD edition is bad (its a gem) but it still baffles me how it costs more than DE.
