Anyone want a free game key for the Microsoft store?

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 03:09 AM PDT

I made a fucky wucky and bought a MS store version of the key for AoE2 DE. Which is unfortunate since I only use Steam. I also cbf wasting my time trying to fight to get a refund.

So first to respond with a "1" gets the key.

    Countering Elephants/Monks

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 06:47 AM PDT

Do people actually build monks as a counter to elephants/knights? How many monks elephant/horsie would you need?

I think I tried building 10 monks once and when that failed I never bothered again. I need some way to counter Khmer but I've yet to see someone use Monks at my low elo.

BREAK THE META; The Cumans Capped Ram Express

Furor_Teutonicus here, leader of the FavsT AOE2 DE Clan our Discord is the following https://discord.gg/h3E52Bz.

I have been working on a strategy for the past week and would like to share it with the community. I think the Cumans buff has turned them from zero to hero. Capped Rams in Castle Age is stronger than many players realize.

Here is a link to the strategy guide; BREAK THE META; The Cumans Capped Ram Express

Any tips or constructive criticism to make the guide or strategy better without changing the theme would be appreciated, thanks.

How many hours do you have on the game, and what's your 1v1 elo?

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 02:56 AM PDT

I'm at 70 hours played and ~670 elo random map 1v1. I've recently picked up DE after playing it as a kid, but I don't have much other RTS experience.

I've started practicing build orders etc, but not having too much success in game. Do i suck, or are all the 800-1000 elo players much more experienced in the game?

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 08:13 AM PDT

Lately when i play HD i always find myself craving for that sweet DE upgrade and it's honestly killing me,but due to corona my financials really suffer. So my question is should i scrape up a bit of money and buy it or the better graphics, quality of life stuff and civs don't really worth it? Thanks!

Villagers getting attacked by wild animals while my army units just watch on...

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 04:19 AM PDT

Does anyone else experience this? I send some militia or archers to guard a new area while sending my villager to build a wall. Then some wild animal starts attacking my villager, while my army units just a couple of feet away do nothing. It's so frustrating! Does anyone else get this? Does setting them to guard the villager make them attack the animals?

African Kingdoms 2.0 cross-civilization features brainstorm

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 06:08 PM PDT

So, as anyone who looks at my Reddit history can probably figure out, I'm really into African history!

Recently, I posted a list of what I thought to be the best candidates for new African civilizations for the game.

In this post, I want to share my ideas for cross-civilization features that I think would add a lot of value to another Africa-themed expansion to the game.

    New architecture:

Southern Africa - an architecture based on the architecture styles of Southern and Western African civilizations. This architecture would be more wood-heavy than the existing African architecture.

    New civilization type:

Tsetse belt civilizations - African civilizations with no access to the stable line because of the Tsetse fly in their home region.

The four Tsetse belt civilizations I can see being added to the game are: the Edo, the Kongolese, the Swahili, and the Zimbabweans.

    Special buildings:

Moat - wall building that costs FOOD AND GOLD instead of stone or wood (reflecting the cost in manpower to excavate the earth). Very resistant to siege and missile weapons but more vulnerable to infantry and cavalry than stone walls. Cannot be bypassed with the siege tower. The moat benefits from building upgrades. The moat can be upgraded to a FORTIFIED MOAT that is stronger and appears as the moat fortified with spikes. You cannot build gates in moats though, and moats cannot be built more than one tile thick.

The moat reflects many African civilizations' sophisticated use of earthwork defenses. For example, Benin City, which was as large as the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, was protected with a 20-foot deep moat.

    Special units:

Mambele Ranger/Raider (Mambele Ranger, Mambele Raider, Elite Mambele Raider) - an infantry unit with a ranged melee attack available to African civilizations without the stable line. The mambele ranger/raider line is trained at the barracks, with the Mambele Ranger being available in the Feudal Age, the Mambele Raider upgrade becoming available in the Castle Age, and the Elite Mambele Raider upgrade becoming available in the Imperial Age. A mambele ranger replaces scout cavalry in the Dark Age for African civilizations without the stable line.

The Mambele Ranger/Raider has a very short range and its rate of fire depends on the proximity of the target. The Mambele Ranger/Raider attacks fastest at point-blank range and its rate of fire decreases the farther away its target gets.

Like the Scout Cavalry line and the Eagle Scout line, the Mambele Ranger line have innate resistance to conversion and an attack bonus against monks. However, the Mambele Ranger line is not as good as the Scout Cavalry line and the Eagle Scout line against archers, siege, and cavalry. Instead, the Mambele Ranger line has an anti-infantry focus.

The Mambele Ranger reflects the rapidity with which many African civilizations could mobilize infantry and wields the mambele, a throwing knife popular throughout Central Africa.

Lancer - a generic Steppe Lancer equivalent unit for certain African civilizations that employ cavalry.

I think a lancer unit should be available to more civilizations (and not just African civilizations). It provides greater flexibility in designing civilizations' rosters to be fun and historically authentic.

Okay, that's it for my ideas so far. Feel free to let me know what you think. :)

    Lombardia is an awesome map!

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 10:29 AM PDT

I just wanted to share my love for the map Lombardia, which has been added to the multiplayer mappool since the last update.
I think that the close starting positions lead to a lot of team play and interaction right from the start of the game. On top of that, it's relatively open and has the standard resource distribution, so no Civs have a strong advantage and you can play aggressively or defensively.
The structure of the map can lead to huge battles in the middle later in the game, in which all players are involved. But still it is possible to raid the Eco if the sides are neglected.

Just an awesome map, I hope it remains in Mappool for a while! :D

Anyone remember U Da Prey? It was by FAR my favorite custom scenario, and it was relatively common on GameRanger and GameSpy back in the day. Does anyone still play? Someone did port the Deathly Cliffs version to DE, so it is possible to play it on there.
