How is there no reconnect feature in aoe2 definitive multiplayer?

    Posted: 05 May 2020 06:25 AM PDT

Literally just lost my entire game because I disconnected for 3 seconds. Such a great game but with no reconnect feature the chances that any one player disconnects is very high, completely ruining the game.

You can scout shorelines by placing and deleting dock foundations. The AI does this.

I love the game ever so slightly more when I win after a long equal game

The AI is a terrible sparring partner

    Posted: 05 May 2020 05:05 AM PDT

I'm actually really impressed with the DE AI. It's come a long way from humble beginnings. It can boom, build the right counters, micro, and even repair its siege.

But when I play 1v1 against the AI, win or lose, it's always one sided. Either I pick a strategy which curbstomps the inevitable flood of Feudal archers and skirms (tower rush or fast castle knights work well) or I die. Winning this way isn't particularly satisfying because I can see how the game plays out from a mile off. It's just cheesing a bot.

Beating the AI hasn't prepared me well for PvP. The way the AI micros its units is completely different from humans, making siege almost totally ineffective against ranged units until you can mass it in the Imperial Age. The way it micros individual units out of the way of ranged fire or trebuchet projectiles is also a bit silly. Archers rule the meta in PvP but they're usually a poor choice against the AI.

Unless it's a really closed map you don't get pitched battles either: the AI defecates all over the map with whatever unit it's chosen to spam and continues spamming until it either wins or loses.

On PvP, I kinda hate the idea of wasting everyone's time while trying to learn the game, which basically describes my last dozen games. It would be a really nice intro to the PvP scene if I could turn up with a couple of reliable builds to at least make a fight of it. Obviously I know what the builds are, but executing them in PvP is way different from single player and needs a ton of practice.

So while I'd like to applaud the devs for making a strong AI, I really think the game would benefit from having a more human style of AI, one that techs into a particular composition, masses its units, refrains from the sillier micro, and attacks and retreats like a player. What do you think?

    How to "fix" Nomad

    Posted: 05 May 2020 12:33 AM PDT

Adjust the default starting resources to be 525 wood instead of 475. That's it.

What would this do? It would let all civilizations expect for Huns and Chinese start with 1 House 1 Dock and 1 TC and therfore end the endless amount of Malians and Persians mirror matches, it would also let China (and Mayans) start the game with extra villigers again without being overpowered. Another side effect of this would be shorter Dark Ages and less TC idle time for all.

Also remove like half of the hills but that is a different problem.

Happened to catch the VoD of Day9's stream a few weeks ago while suffering from lockdown boredom, I remember playing AoE1 when I was a kid but never played since. After watching Day9 play YT recommended some of T90's videos and I was really interested. That lead me to watch the RedBull tournament last week and was inspired to download and play the game myself. Just had my first ever online match 1v1 Byzantines vs Britons, and it was brilliant. My eco was horrible and I just attack moved my cataphracts and knights into his halbs, but somehow still managed to win on numbers alone. I think I'm hooked and will definitely play more. Perfect cure for lockdown blues.

My own take on the civ voices (reply to u/JSTM2)

    Posted: 05 May 2020 04:26 AM PDT

You can replace the UU of any civ with another current UU, what do you choose?

    Posted: 05 May 2020 04:20 AM PDT

All tech and bonuses that applied to the previous UU still apply to the new one. I'm thinking Magyar War Elephants. Or gothic karambits. Or gothic shotels. lots of options here actually, what y'all think.

EDIT: to clarify, a Mayan longbows for example wouldn't retain It range, it would get cheaper however.

    1000 ELO @ 10 games vs. 30 games played.

    Posted: 04 May 2020 09:23 PM PDT

Following on from a previous post I made last week, I dove into Ranked play and sure enough half my games I destroyed my opponent and the other half I made my best Cleveland Browns impersonation. I've noticed however, the more games I log, the "tougher" my opposition seems to be. I realized just how slow I am at micro. So... more questions from this noob.

    1. I'm trying to get the hang of control groups, and its made a difference keeping my eco going while trying to manage a group of soldiers. How good do people in this community tend to be with control group micromanagement?

    2. 3 of my losses have occurred when I've comfortably outscored my opponent but I ended up getting eco-locked and forfeited b/c I couldn't make any units. What are some good strategies for winning late game (post-imp) trash battles?

Is there actually any chance of hotfixes?

    Posted: 05 May 2020 04:46 AM PDT

So after last months patch there are so many reports about game breaking bugs, such as too long advance times, no double advance, no advance possible, interface bugs, units with too much HP, or armor... It's quite shameful these have not yet been addressed officially and no patch has come out yet. But same was with the Organ gun, did not get fixed until the next monthly patch. So will the game just be a bug fest until June, or is there actually any statement about this been made, or any chance for a hotfix? If patches like this continue I honestly would prefer they stop touching the game all together, once the game breaking bugs are fixed.
