Guide - How to downgrade to the previous patch (39284). For casting, viewing replays, etc.

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 10:24 PM PDT

For people who cannot access their replays from the previous patch.

You will need .NET Core Runtime from Microsoft: https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download

Here's a link to the 2 files mentioned in the tutorial below: https://www.dropbox.com/s/s2r7e3zo5yozdqo/files.zip?dl=0

The contents of these 2 files are the list of files that were removed/replaced with the latest patch. The below commands will download those aforementioned files from the previous patch (39284)

    • Step 1: Download Steam Depot Downloader from here (The zip file, not the source code!): https://github.com/SteamRE/DepotDownloader/releases/tag/DepotDownloader_2.3.6

    • Step 2: Unzip the archive anywhere.

    • Step 3: Copy the following files to the DepotDownloader folder that you just extracted: 813781.txt, 813782.txt. Files provided above.

    • Step 4: Open a command prompt, navigate to the folder where you unzipped DepotDownloader

    • Step 5: Run the following commands in the command prompt. Replace <steamusername> and <steampassword> with actual values. The data is sent directly to Steam and your credentials are safe. If you have 2FA on your account, you will be asked for the code in the command prompt.

    1:

    dotnet DepotDownloader.dll -app 813780 -depot 813781 -manifest 3406020475065138362 -filelist 813781.txt -dir old_files -username <steamusername> -password <steampassword> -remember-password

    2:

    dotnet DepotDownloader.dll -app 813780 -depot 813782 -manifest 8709789847028605534 -filelist 813782.txt -dir old_files -username <steamusername> -password <steampassword> -remember-password

These commands will download the files that have been replaced/removed with the latest patch. You can verify that the depot/manifest IDs are correct by going to https://steamdb.info/app/813780/

    • Step 6: Inside your DepotDownloader folder, you should now have a 'old_files' folder. Copy everything from that folder (except the .DepotDownloader folder) to your AoE2DE install folder, usually 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\AoE2DE'

    • Step 7: When asked to replace files, press 'Yes'. If you aren't asked to replace any files, you've fucked up somewhere. Sit in a corner and cry.

    • Step 8: Start the game now. You should be on the 39284 patch. Verify by loading a replay from the previous version.

    • Step 9: To go back to the latest version, just right-click on the game from inside Steam, click on Properties -> Local Files -> Verify integrity of game files. After verifying, it'll tell you about the files that need to be re-downloaded. Once those files are downloaded, you should be on the latest patch again. If you need to go back to the previous version again, just copy/paste the files from the old_files folder again.

Is this common? I’m terrible at this game and only played a few online games won a couple but this game was so boring is it a standard thing on arena map?

A question about Ram movement speed

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 04:49 AM PDT

Hi all, just wondering if a the speed on the garrisoned unit impacts the speed of the ram, for example, a siege ram full of Woad Raiders vs. a siege ram full of Teutonic Knights, thanks!

900 elo a lot tougher than people say

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 07:16 PM PDT

I'm 900 elo and i just can't climb up. I constantly get drushed, tower rushed, and all kinds of early agression people claim is not a thing in low elo.

I just don't get how from outside it seems as if 900 elo is people who don't even know how to play the game, yet when i play people are extremely agressive and tough to play against.

    How to Fast Mangudai

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 05:50 AM PDT

    Hello,

I just fall in love with mongol civ currently and try to improve with them but i struggle to find a good build order, when i read their bonus i understand that basically the main goal is to have full upgraded mangudai with a mix of hussard and siege in late game but for the build order i just have no clue of what i have to do. So i have a few question

I think the two main strategy with them is scout rush into mangudai,or fast castle and mangudai without losing time with scout rush.

What's the build order for these two strategie?

If i go scout rush what upgrade i should do ? how many villager before clicking on castle, and how many on each ressource ? How many scout?

Same question for the second option if i go straight fast castle into castle mangudai.

What and when upgrade should i do? Eco upgrade before military upgrade ? or military upgrade before eco upgrade

when i have to start collecting stone for have enough ressource for put a castle right in time at the start of my castle age ?

how many villager on each ressource? for have continuous mangudai production and villager and still have enough ressource to search some upgrade

What is the order and priority for the mangudai upgrade (there are so many in castle age who affect mangudai) i dont know what i should get first and what i should get last

I would really appreciate any help about all my question

    Thanks in advance :)

    Byzantines & mediterranean architecture

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 05:24 AM PDT

I think although Byzantines look pretty good in current Mediterranean set, they should have a mix of Mediterranean and Middle East style, especially for temples. Mediterranean style can be divided into two as Western and Eastern Mediterranean which can also include Turks. Just brainstorming no chauvinistic stuff please. (And yes I agree devs have more important things to care about and shouldn't allocate resources for pure aesthetics)

    Laming doesn't exist

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 05:34 PM PDT

Isn't the whole POINT of competitive play to be competitive? I don't get why certain competitive tactics are frowned upon. Where do you draw the line? Who decides what is lame and what is fair? What are the criteria? Literally anything that inhibits anyone ever in the Dark Age? Is a drush lame? People complain about full walling becoming the meta, but at the same time complain about the exact tactics that can be used to counter it.

Whatever works within the limitations of the game, works. Bugs are another story of course. If you don't want your boars and your sheep stolen, get the devs the change the game to make it impossible to do so. If you can't, then you have to accept the game, and whatever is possible within it, for what it is. If you can't handle competitive play, why play competitive?

In the words of Bruce Lee: "Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one."

Hi all, just wondering if a 20% gold cost reduction on units translates to being able to have 20% less villagers on gold, thanks!

An Ode to HC3 Decider - Emperor in a Barrel v/s William The Conqueror

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 10:47 PM PDT

Tis a story of ambition, of valor, of grit,
Of a Conqueror and an Emperor, told bit by bit.

A land of peace, of civilizations with dreams,
'bout to witness villagers' and fighting mens' screams.

A Conqueror, his eye on the kingdom he hath not been given,
An Emperor, his ambition on the cup that is hidden.

Equal beginnings, the sheep, the boar, the trees,
Only murmurs of future bloody engagements in the breeze.

With the shrouds of darkness thrown hither with food,
The villages now enter the age of feud.

Lest feud too long and blinded by siege,
The villages fear the victory out of reach.

The Conqueror's machines aiming stones at the start,
Have the Emperor stood silent with his hand on his heart.

Whilst the Conqueror streams horsemen, spearmen, machines,
The Emperor is patient, and chalks an economic scheme.

Conqueror goes too far, dreams of a forward beast in stone!
His dreams are shattered, all remains is a castle of doubt alone.

The Emperor smiles, he may not be that quick,
but tis a game of patience, of position and wit.

'Not just you', the Conqueror bellows,
'My army is valiant, will push you to your hollows'.

The raids of the Conqueror far and wide,
Made the Emperor, in a barrel hide.

'Ahh this is beautiful, disgusting, unbelievable and brave',
shout the overlords, voiced by T90 and Dave.

The cannons, the spears, the javelins all violent,
Slowly, but surely, it all starts getting silent.

Where were castles reaching the skies galore,
Now lies torn armor of the horsemen's valor.

Forests abundant once upon the dark times,
All bloodied sand now under the imperial war chimes.

In his heart he knew, he had lost, his men outwitted,
But he is the Conqueror, many more battlefields to be pitted.

On his mighty horse, his throne, down his crown he laid,
As he muttered the hallowed words - 'gg well played.'

Does Careening Prevent Damage from Fire Ships Too?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 09:15 AM PDT

I just played a game on 4 lakes where the opposing player was Berbers and absolutely destroyed my Italian navy. His 3 fire ships took out my 3 handidly, even though we engaged at basically the same time.

Now, either it was some sort of wizardry micro (which didn't seem like it cause his ships didn't move), or he had some sort of ship armor I wasn't aware of. Or have I misunderstood how Careening works? Cause it says "makes ships less vulnerable to missile attack with +1 pierce armor" and it seemed logical to me that this wouldn't apply because fire is neither a missile attack, nor would pierce armor somehow stop fire. But now I'm questionining this assumption. Does anyone know the answer?

    Do you build outposts?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 08:12 AM PDT

I rarely use outposts. But I have noticed that Max builds lots of outposts. Is this part of why he is a great player or would he one of the best anyway without a ton of outposts and forward buildings?
