    There is a mod that shows your opponent which Cavalry units you are trying to convert.

    I had an opponent today pull away the exact two knights I was trying to convert and then dived the monks with the rest.

    I don't know the name of the Mod does anybody in the community know? This mod really makes monk defence against Knights useless!

    Perspective on DE

    Despite the routine inclusion of new bugs with every monthly patch, I am beyond pleased with DE and how the devs are handling it. I'd like to compare the development of DE compared to some of my other most-played games, and you'll see why I am so enthralled with DE and patient with the devs.

    1. Team Fortress 2- This game has not received an update in more than 1,000 days. (They're keeping meticulous track over at r/tf2.) Furthermore, the game is INUNDATED with bots. If you join any random matchmaking game, within minutes an aimbotter will appear, completely ruin the game, and spam the chat with racial slurs. This has been going on for over half a year now, and Valve has still not solved the problem.
    2. Dark Orbit- This is a space-shooter MMO that is not nearly as popular as the other games on this list, but it had a respectable community about 10 years ago. Unfortunately, the devs explicitly decided that for the last 10 years, the only content they would add to the game would be pay-to-win upgrades that immediately invalidated whatever the previous round of pay-to-win upgrades was. On top of that, this is another game inundated with bots. As the leaderboards became filled with either people who would spend thousands of dollars or people who ran bot accounts for thousands of hours, the community shrunk and essentially died.
    3. Super Smash Brothers Melee- This game, like Age of Empires 2, has a thriving competitive community that has endured over the years since its release almost 20 years ago. The difference from AoE is that Nintendo explicitly does not give a damn about the competitive scene. They have historically taken legal action to stop tournaments from streaming, they explicitly designed all the sequels to the game to be as far removed from its mechanics as possible, they never fund or organize serious tournaments, and they would never dream of making a DE or HD release.
    4. Age of Empires 2- This game has had two re-releases, and the most recent release routinely receives balance updates and quality-of-life features. It is true that those updates frequently come with obnoxious bugs, but they get patched out within a matter of days or weeks, and then only the awesome new features remain.

    In conclusion: Is DE flawed? Yes. Is it still absolutely awesome? Yes. I will be eternally happy with how AoE is being handled compared to some of my all-time other favorite games.

    Is MP easy to get into for someone lacking competitive RTS experience?

    Hi, I've been looking for an online strategy game for a while and AoE2 DE seems to be one of most popular ones. I've played aoe before, not online or competitive though. While I'm willing to watch some tutorials from time to time, I really don't like having to read/study the meta or memorizing strict building orders etc. (that's why I can't get into MOBAs), so I was wondering how AoE2 is like in that regards. In short, can you learn by playing? I'm not looking to reach higher skill tiers obviously. Thanks!

    Probably this is a bit pathetic but I am so happy. I never managed to do it before. I played 1v1 in Arabia, both teams teutons. I mostly followed ZeroEmpires basic build order (I also used the mod collection for hd on his guide), and then remembered some tips from Spirit of The Law videos (which I have been listening in the background quite a lot).

    I also got spared at some point because the enemy actually entered my base and proceeded to attack the town center, probably if they had focused more on killing villagers it would have been harder for me to recover.

    Modding texts (AoE2HD)

    Hi to all,

    I'm trying to modify the txt file (creating the correct file key-value-modded-strings-utf8 in the mod folder).

    I've verified that using Genie Editor to save text files, it crashes Always, so it seems it cannot be used.

    Using Windows Notepad and saving the file in UTF-8 codification, the game doesn't read it at all.

    I have to save it in ANSI codification, that way the game reads it... but I lose lot of useful needed characters (expanded latin language), cause if I insert è, à or similar characters, the game crashes always.

    Anyway, I've verified that some online mods use a UTF-8 txt file (like Extended Help) and the game reads it correctly..!

    How to create a UTF-8 txt that can be read by game...? Which program I have to use?

    bug on Mongol conquest event

    I can't seem to be able to complete the last challenge, I can easily reach feudal under 10 minutes with Mongols but the challenge doesn't complete. it's mandatory to do it on a ranked game? been trying against the ai but it doesn't register

    Mods that restore original campaign voices, sounds, and cutscenes now available

    I don't believe this has been posted before, but there are now mods available to restore the original campaign voices, sounds, and backgrounds pictures for the cutscenes are now available. There are three mods that have to be installed since the author was unable to combine them:

    Original AoE 2 Campaigns - English Sounds

    Original AoE 2 Campaigns - Backgrounds

    This is great for those of us who grew up with the original voices. One of the mods requires manual copying of files.

    Ranked Team Games

    Need advice on countering elephants!

    as above, was playing with this guy in a 2 V 2 as cumans and he was Khmer. by feudal age he was already spamming 5 to 6 elephants and rushed my base. I had gone for second TC and archers before going into pikes but just could not take the elephants down. before I knew it, 6 grew to 10 and grew to 15 and more.

    any advice?

    Mongols, Celts and Vikings were considered to be "raider" civs, and had their own architecture style back in the AGE 2 design doc. What other civs up to DE could also be considered raiders?

    What do people think of nerfing palisades?

    Seems like there's a consensus at a high level that melee units aren't good in feudal due to walling.

    A few ideas I had were increasing build time and making them have negative armor while constructing so quick walls can broken.

    It might be interesting to encourage outposts by increasing the starting stone by 10 to provide an alternative to walls.

    Internet drops during the game

    Hi guys.

    Have a very weird problem now.

    I never had any complaints with my WiFi and, say, I played the game without drops for quite some time.

    Today almost every game after 10 minutes my internet drops. When I don't play aoe2, the internet works just fine.

    I really struggle to understand, how because of the game my WiFi can drop, but that happened too often (and did not happen outside the game at all) to be a coincidence.

    Anyone had the same issue? Is it a problem of patch (although I played yesterday okay) or is it my problem and just a coincidence? Alternatively, I may not notice drops for a minute while working, watching youtube or streams (I really cannot believe in the last one), but they were here outside the game.

    Any advice on how to deal with that?

    P.S. To check whether it's just my problem, played some rocket league. Not even a lag.

    I'm always able to beat Moderate New AI but constantly lose to Moderate HD AI

    I keep reading that the new AI is an improvement over the older ones, but in my experience my ass usually gets kicked by Moderate HD AI. I don't play multiplayer, just play coop with wifey and friends against AIs.

    What I see is that HD AI is able to kinda rush me with 8-ish Knights, while New AI always sends tiny groups of trash units, easily killed by towers or my own knights.

    My usual strategy is Fast Castle. It works great against New AI, but terribly poorly against HD AI.

    So from my experience against Moderates, New AI sucks compared to HD AI.

    Does anyone have a similar feeling?
