I did it (finally)! 1v1 rating from 7+ to 10+

Biry, an argentinian, while playing a tournament of Age of Empires 2 DE wrote in the chat "Advanced to Castle Age". His opponent thought it was a game notification and surrendered. Biry never passed to Castle Age. This is a typical and great example of "Argentineada".

Is it time for team UK?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 05:24 AM PDT

I need to preface this by saying I am very aware that the team game ladder in DE is not a great indicator - it's not regularly played by the pros and it doesn't allow for a very accurate ELO scoring for each player.

HOWEVER The UK currently has three players in the top 30 (Nick #9, Blade #12 and _Virus_Pulse at #30, even if that is an unfortunate name right now). I'm not sure the UK has ever really had players in the pro 1v1 scene, let alone a team, but I'd love to see a Suomi/Winland style chemistry and team game crew starting to enter the big tournaments.

The roster could be filled with Rgeadn, IAmMike (both around top 45), or perhaps Daywalker from the DM scene. There are also AoL_Recon or Hallis who are on the 1v1 RM top 100 leaderboards.

I could volunteer as excel boy

How play Magyars in team game?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 03:22 AM PDT

Yesterday, I played Magyars in 3:3. I was pocket so I went scout and knight.

But I wondered If I go scouts > knights at Magyars, is there any benefit played Franks or Persians? They have better eco bonus and better knight line, and they haver better siege.

Magyars have better archer line but usually If I went to knight, archer line are useless in team game because of my team archers.

    Is there any benefits?

or Maygars are fine in flank?

Is the spectator mode in DE bugged?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 07:38 AM PDT

I cant choose a player to watch just gaia and it makes weird clicking noise when scrolling through the map.

    I cant watch replays.

Is it just my pc or did they break the game again?

Borderline excess even for noob gameplay?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 04:00 PM PDT

How do you recognize a strong pocket player ?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 02:14 AM PDT

I've watched many team game tournaments but don't myself play team games, since I don't think my laptop can handle them. Thus I lack first hand experience on the matter.

I often hear that theMax, for example, is a beastly pocket player. I can easily believe this, because of the results. But where does his skill show? Any good player left to free boom should dominate, right? That's often what happens when people agree that he carried. So, what I hear is people saying that the pocket carried, but what I often see is the opponent failing to do damage to said pocket. (Or sometimes Rubenstock just happens.)

It's easy to see when Liereyy is being godlike on the flank, because archer micro is very flashy. This is no the case with pockets. All I see is a lot of knights. It's sometimes hard to say whether the flood is because of lack of pressure or outstanding skill.

Stereotype time: what civ or map tends to have players/playstyles that annoy you or that you hate facing?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 07:52 AM PDT

I'll start with a fantastic example:

Generic AOE II Civ Player: "Alright! Can't wait to play an exciting, standard round of my favorite game, Age of Empires II!"

    Inca: "Yes....standard....unless...?"

I cannot remember the last time I've faced an Inca player that just liked the civ for something other than a gimmick. Infact, I don't think I've encountered an Inca player that played normally. The civ itself is great, but the only people that seem to play it are the ones wanting to do something non-standard.

Any time I face the Inca, I immediately expect to see some kind of gimmick the moment I hit Feudal. It's not even a surprise, it's just expected at this point. They also seem to hard rush food in Dark Age just to ensure they beat you to Feudal so that they get the first tower out or TC douche early or whatever. At that point it becomes clear the game isn't going to Castle Age regardless of who wins. I don't even mind being tower rushed or douched or whatever by any other civ, but when the Inca do it it's somehow outrageously obnoxious to me. I think it has to do with myself anticipating disappointment the moment I see the Inca's symbol, and then by the time they hit Feudal and IMMEDIATELY I see some gimmick, my thought is "not surprised, just disappointed."

I get it, it's a viable strat. However, there's something exceedingly annoying about encountering such a specialized strat that you have to learn to face, and learning the key to facing it does next to nothing with helping you in standard games. I want to get good at AOE II, not tower defense simulator.

There's also an irony in the fact that Incan players are SOOOOO deadset on doing something weird that it actually means you'll pick up on the weird strat quickly since it makes their matches memorable and you notice the patterns (such as how I always encounter faster Feudal times against Inca) quicker. Little things like making an outpost, rushing Feudal yourself, securing your stone or making militia in anticipation of a villager brawl. I get it's beatable, that's not the problem. The problem is just I'm never happy to see the Incan logo cause it means this match will be boring and short and filled with all kinds of cheese.

    Scout rush follow up

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 06:56 AM PDT

I (900ELO so noob as hell) am mastering the technique of scout rushing with the mongols, and I think I can do it pretty well. I reach feudal around 9:30, produce 5 scouts (6 if you count the original one) and raid my opponent's base, killing several vils. As I said, I'm noob and so are my opponents, so no wonder if I can kill 4-5 vils in before he comes with spears.

In the meanwhile I try to continue producing vils in my TC, but because I'm microing the scouts my eco is far from great. I end up going up to castles around 25, with 40 villagers, and get crushed when the guy sends 5 kts and kills me off.

Any advise about how to prevent this mess?

Cost efficiency matrix (medium Hit&Run setting) for most unit types, generated using AoE2 Combat Simulator - new simulator version will be released tomorrow (now civs can be selected & non-unique units will be affected by civ bonuses & techs as well) - for more info visit https://aoe-combatsim.com/

What was your child-like playstyle when you played AOE II as a kid?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 01:07 PM PDT

    For me it was:

-Each villager job needs exactly one employee. One vil on berries, one farmer, one hunter, one shepard, one gold miner, one fisher, etc etc. I think I typically had 21 to 40 vils only. (40 being when I'd break my rule and put like TWO on each job)

-Every technology must be researched before aging up.

-Every building needs to be built. This isn't too bad but it did mean I always had a derp Outpost somewhere stupid where it does absolutely nothing.

-Every military unit needs to be made exactly five times.

I actually don't even remember if I could beat the AI. I think I mostly played campaigns and got frustrated when facing the AI, which looking back at how bad the old AI was, is impressive.

I can't be the only one with those habits, right?

EDIT: Forgot to mention I always wanted to make a scenario where you control one unit on an adventure. Problem was I wanted the strongest melee unit and I'd get frustrated cause every unit I tried got countered by something. Started with Woads cause I liked them, then tried Samurai, then got frustrated cause Teutonic Knights would beat them and they were too slow for my liking. Did a lot of dicking around in the scenario editor.

Also I thought Jaguar Warriors must be better than Eagle Warriors because they're made in the castle.

    Annoying game - four lakes

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 03:53 PM PDT

So this guy went Vikings and I went Incas.

I nailed my dark age, got feudal and produced a few Eagle Scouts - he had already walled.

Oh he's trying to boom? I can out boom him.

Nailed it. Got imperial and attacked just as he leveled up to imperial. Blasted through his walls to find - more walls. Walls upon walls.

No matter. Got through and pillaged his TC and lone castle. Easy. Small fry.

    Why hasn't he conceded?

One of his lakes - fishing? Not on my watch. It was like George Clooney in The Perfect Storm x16 only instead of big waves it was hastily constructed demo ships.

    Why hasn't he conceded?

His other lake. Wow. Okay. 40 Elite Cannon Galleons and 20 stupid viking longboats. And. What's this?

    Research Spies.

One transport ship with people in it. That's why he hasn't conceded.

If I made a dock he would destroy it before it was constructed, out ranging every one of my units. If he spotted Trebs he would destroy them. I had no idea how to win.

This lasted 30 minutes longer than it needed to before I conceded, despite having about a 15,000 point lead.

    Banned Four Lakes.

What can you even do against that?

How do you win Malians vs Ethiopians on gold rush?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 08:20 AM PDT

I opened with 22 pop m@a into skirms while my opponent opened 23 pop archers.I was able to get 1 kill and force some idle time.

He was able to get 1 vil kill before I had skirm numbers out.Afterwards he just camped in his base.

He reached castle age slightly faster than me because I was making a food unit and he wasn't.I had to give up control of my side of the hill because he got a siege workshop up and elite skirm takes a long time to complete.

I eventually added a siege workshop of my own and took back the hill with some huge mangonel shots and castled it.Added monks and got 3 relics.I couldn't push because he had a castle up on his side of the hill.I was also booming on 3 tc behind this.I clicked to imp and began transitioning into champskarls.

Now he got to imp when I was about 1/3 of the way there(I was making 3 range skirms and was booming on 3 tc compared to 2).He trebbed down my castle and got one of his own up.

Even though my base was getting trebbed(lost a tc),I tried to wait and get enough no. of champskarls and all the upgrades before moving out.I moved out with 36 FU champskarls, but he just ran up his hill, sat under the castle and there was absolutely nothing I could do.I was sending wave after wave by abusing the market but I literally couldn't do shit.I tried adding rams but my workshops got trebbed down and by the time I made them in the back,it was too late

He eventually added lc to raid and I had to call gg.

Like what could I do?How do Malians break this Ethiopian arbs under castle thing

Is there a way to edit the default DE AI script to allow it to use more villages and military on lower difficulties?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 07:41 AM PDT

    Hi,

I'm trying to increase the maximum number of villagers and military the AI is able to use on each difficulty setting.

I found the respective values in ..\Promisory\const.per and tried to create a local "mod" by copying the file to my <user>\Games\Age of Empires 2 DE\76561197995533160\mods\local\Test\resources_common\ai\Promisory\ directory. It does show up in the Mods screen but the changes to the file don't seem to have any effect.

I changed (defconst civilian-percent X) and (defconst military-percent X) to 100 each but the Easiest AI still stops at 8 villagers.

    Any tips?
