Old School players, hear my call! Posted: 18 Jul 2020 05:00 AM PDT | Hello everyone, as promised few days ago, I've created a Discord server for a very specific class of players. Before I'll start with explaining how server works and what You can expect from it, I have to tell You about idea behind all of this in case, You don't know. So, as many of You, I'm a an old veteran of this fantastic game and it's been my favorite game from my childhood till today. I'm not going into details and I'll try skip long texting as much as possible. The difference between me and many of player base, is that I don't rush in this game. I'm trying to enjoy every detail, that game is offering. While You will rush Castle Age around 15 minute, I'll rather have it around 20-30 minute, because Feudal Age is my favorite one! For example I'm saying, that Man-At-Arms are the most beautiful infranty unit of all from Barracks! It's a man, with shield, sword and a simple armor. Exactly what I want from melee unit! Not a dude with long 2h sword in both hands... Even his movement is cool af! I'll skip details a bit here again, I'm sure You understood my point there. So, after I realized, that there are players, who unlike me like rushing and instead of 2 hour relaxation and fun, They rather like have 30 minutes of frustration, stress and all time score watching... And I'm not judging anyone for that. It's everyone decition and I respect that. However, that doesn't solve my issue... Over 250 hours I hopelessly and blindly played with anyone I met. And in 95% cases, it ended up same, up until few days ago... Where I got an idea, with creating a brand new Discord server, specificed for players like me and create a new comunity filled with ppl like me! So here I am, offering You place in my Discord server, that is specificed for players, who would like to play a very long, chill game over those fast games. On my server, You will find text channels with various focuses (hope I spelled this right, sorry for my bad english, not best in that :D) and also voice channels from free talking, FFA matches to 4v4 matches! While server will use in general English language, I can at any time create specific text channel for any of You guys, so You can freely talk with Your friends in language, that is more natural for You, so that You could feel more comfortable on our server! One of the last things I would like to mention about server, is that for more fun and making being on our server more enjoyable and interesting, I created "roles" (watch the screens) as a civilizations with colors, that specify them! It's just for more fun, nothing else lads. So, after You join our server, contant me (Midroid) and tell me Your favorite civilization, so You can have Your own special color name! So, in case You're like me (and many others) and like long games, please contact me or follow Discord link here: https://discord.gg/USFfpEN Here are few screens, for better picture! Screen 1 Screen 2 Screen 3 Screen 4 Well, that will in short be everything from me. I will see You guys on our server, thanks everyone for Your time, attention and wish You all good luck! submitted by /u/Midroid_Official [link] [comments]
Voobly entirely disabled for Linux users Posted: 18 Jul 2020 03:27 AM PDT So, entering any aoe2 lobby while playing with Wine (Wine allows you to play Windows games on a Linux computer, among other things) will temporarily ban you for a year. The Team at Voobly is saying that they are having problems with hackers that happen to use Wine, but it seems like in response to that, every single Linux user has been gutted from the system until further notice. But yeah, has anyone found a way to continue playing regardless? Is there any of the 20 lobbies that is not immediately auto-banning when entered? I just wanted to play some casuals with people I know. submitted by /u/AuraSFear [link] [comments] |

Some noob questions about 2v2 Posted: 18 Jul 2020 06:07 AM PDT Hi there, Im really noob but I've been beating AI 1v1 on moderate about 60% of the time. I'm trying to play 2v2 in AI but not getting ahead in any games Should I scout out my ally before my enemy? And when should I start trading with my ally? Also, if the enemy is in my town, can I alert my ally to help me? Thank you submitted by /u/NeedANewPath101 [link] [comments] |
Recommended system requirements for non hd AOE2? Posted: 18 Jul 2020 02:17 AM PDT Hey guys I currently play on voobly(non HD version), and the game lags/drops FPS when playing on a large map with 200+ pop. It feels like if I am playing in a slow motion. I currently have a core 2 duo, so I am planning to buy a 2nd/3rd gen core i3. Would it be enough to handle all the pop without dropping FPS? or do I need higher specs? submitted by /u/Samir2298 [link] [comments] |
Can't get better than a C on build order scenarios.. feel like I'll never improve .. Posted: 18 Jul 2020 05:54 AM PDT Title says it all really.. Of all the build order scenarios the only one I can get a C on is the archer one. The rest I am disgraceful. Any advice on how to improve my game would be appreciated. I use hotkeys for TC, build house/farm, idle village and idle military(not often this one). I feel like they all start with 6 on food 4 on wood but it seems to be whenever I need to lure the boars I start to fuck it up. The villagers don't die I just feel slow at garossoning the vils and ungarossoning again.. Also the build order says X on sheep ... I've already consumed the sheep the map gives me and even when I command queue it feels like if a villager can't reach the next sheep that millisecond they just slaughter a new one... Any advice is appreciated that could help me speed up my openings.. Also, just to touch, none of the Cicero build orders have had me consume deer yet? Though when I spectate players of all ELO they are consuming deer in the dark age.. good or nah? Thanks for reading anyway, I may also just be bad :D submitted by /u/PaulM7 [link] [comments] |
Civ Difficulty Index Posted: 17 Jul 2020 10:52 PM PDT | So I was inspired enough by u/coolio9876's neat post about confidence intervals to share what I've personally been doing with aoestats data. Question #1: How can we measure the relative difficulty of each civ? Answer #1: Difficulty can mean a few different things. To define it in a quantifiable way, I took inspiration from an article I read a few years ago in which the author estimated the difficulty of champions in League of Legends by (essentially) measuring the correlation between win rate and skill -- that is, champions (civs) that win more in higher level games than lower level games are considered more difficult, while champions (civs) that win more in lower level games than higher level games are considered less difficult. I took this a step further by incorporating play rate as well. My thinking was that a civ with a high win rate but a low play rate isn't necessarily strong -- they may just be frequently one-tricked or chosen for a specific map in the pool. Likewise, a civ having a low win rate but a high play rate could have suffered from a meme-y strategy or happen to be FOTM, perhaps due to a recent tournament showing. The maybe more fundamental reasoning behind using play rate is that players to some degree know what's good at their skill level and will select their civs accordingly. For simplicity I just looked at < 1000 and >= 1650. The calculation is pretty simple: I took the delta in win rate, the delta in play rate, normalized both for variance (divided by standard deviation), and added them together. The resulting value is the Difficulty Index. So in the data below, Celts would appear to be the most difficult civ and Bulgarians the least difficult. Question #2: How can we measure which civs are undervalued or overvalued at a certain skill level? Answer #2: The thinking here is that if a civ wins often but isn't being played often, maybe it's being undervalued at that skill level. Calculation is identical to #1 except I subtracted normalized play rate from normalized win rate instead of summing them. The resulting value is the Play More Index -- note that positive values here indicate they're either undervalued in high level play or overvalued in low level play. So in the data below, Franks would appear to be the most undervalued by high-skill players and/or overvalued by low-skill players (by a large margin!), while Tatars, Aztecs, and Japanese appear to be overvalued by high-skill players and/or undervalued by low-skill players. https://preview.redd.it/x5rtaaplqjb51.png?width=984&format=png&auto=webp&s=b25d269e905c1fa208909cc66e97185c9a33d080 submitted by /u/blacknix [link] [comments]

Khmer scorpion range Bonus shouldn't be a Team bonus Posted: 18 Jul 2020 05:55 AM PDT The way the bonus interacs with some other siege Civs is hilariously effective. Celts get 8+1 range machine gun scorps and Ethiopians basically get mangonel scops with no range. can't even counter them effectively with bombard cannon due to the range difference being so small and BBC taking ages to shot. submitted by /u/chabon22 [link] [comments] |
Help with defending an Arena Castle drop Posted: 18 Jul 2020 01:34 AM PDT So I was playing noob multiplayer arena. And twice in a row I got castle dropped. Once by mayans and once by Mongols. I wasn't behind my opponents in FCing so I don't think it was an issue with bad eco. I found it extremely difficult to counter the push. I made skirms and tried keeping my eco running (could have done better with eco). Would appreciate if I can get any tips to counter or prevent it all together. submitted by /u/SliverinAoe2 [link] [comments] |
So what is the best random 1v1 Civ? (includes graphs) Posted: 17 Jul 2020 10:18 AM PDT | Hi Reddit, So I recently watched SOTL's video which listed the top 5 Random 1v1 civ's based WR using data provided by https://aoestats.io/ for AOE2 DE. One thing that bugs me though is that rankings like these don't take into account any of the variability in the data and thus can be potentially misleading. That is to say given the limited amount of data we have, how confident are we that these rankings are accurate? For example how confident would you be in saying that a civ who won 3/5 (60%) of its games is better than a civ whose won 5453/9540 (57%) of its games? Thankfully, with some reasonably straight forward statistics, we can quantify this uncertainty by creating what's called confidence intervals for each civ's win rate. Essentially these can be thought of as the range of values in which the true win rate will be (*). Calculating these confidence intervals for each civ for Random 1v1's and splitting by ELO results in the following graph: https://preview.redd.it/9xu594ev9gb51.png?width=4800&format=png&auto=webp&s=a99170950ae468a051e2371f1f1b6394904e9524 Things that stand out to me are: - It's really interesting to see the effect of ELO on several civ's; for example, Italians / Indians / Franks appear to perform consistently regardless of ELO whereas civ's like Bulgarians / Vietnamese / Tatars / Lithuanians / Celts clearly have different performances depending on the players skill level.
- The 1650+ ELO range is very uncertain. Quite simply there is a lack of games being played here and as such we just don't have enough data to be able to say with any certainty what the true win rate should be for a lot of civ's
- Something that I really don't understand is that from this data the Goths seem to be performing exceptionally well, however, recent tier lists by Hera and Viper ranked them as F and D tier respectively. Likewise, both put the Chinese and Persians at S tier yet both seem to be performing around average according to the data
Ok, so this is all well and good but what does it mean in terms of the civ's rankings? Well, it is still important to understand the confidence intervals of the rankings because it can help us distinguish between a civ that is #1 because it's truly better than the others vs one that is #1 purely by random chance (after all someone has to be number 1 even if there is no difference). Creating confidence intervals for rankings is harder but thankfully still possible and can be seen in the following graph: https://preview.redd.it/m8y3hedw9gb51.png?width=4800&format=png&auto=webp&s=a766f8882b59bb307e669971e1771773743ddfcf Things that stand out to me are: - Franks / Goths / Huns are clearly dominating. Even taking the uncertainty into account there is no doubting they are overperforming compared to other civ's
- Likewise Koreans / Portuguese / Saracens (and potentially even Chinese) are civ's that seem to be performing without a doubt below average even after taking the uncertainty into account
- Britons / Celts / Teutons + Ethiopians / Indians / Italians / Malay are all good examples of where we may think a civ is performing above/below the average however when taking the uncertainty into account we can see we don't actually have enough evidence to draw any conclusions and they could very well be simply just average
I feel its also important to point out the limitations, nuances & assumptions of this work - The win rates here represent the overall WR rather than average WR against each civ. This means that it takes into account the distribution of civ's that you will go up against. For example, goths tend to perform very well against Mayans and therefore their overall WR might be higher simply because Mayans are a more commonly used civ not necessarily because they are better than every civ
- I wasn't able to include the 1650+ ELO into the ranking intervals as there simply just wasn't enough data
- The ranking intervals were generated via simulating game results by sampling a WR between each civ match up from the WR's estimated asymptotic normal sampling distribution assuming independence between WR's (a dubious assumption, however not accounting for the correlation between WR's is likely to only result in slightly underestimating the confidence intervals rather than any bias).
- All results are based on the most recent patch (37096) using data from https://aoestats.io/ which in turn is based on data from https://aoe2.net/. Big thanks to all developers involved who make this data available!
(*) I am very aware that this explanation of confidence intervals is incorrect, however it is an intuitive way for most people to interpret them and I'm not going to get into the confusing technicalities of frequentist theory here :) submitted by /u/coolio9876 [link] [comments]

When to add in TC #2 and 3 Posted: 17 Jul 2020 06:25 PM PDT So I'm used to religiously placing 2nd and 3rd TC as soon as I hit castle age. What's been happening lately is I'm getting punished badly for it and I'll end the game with a 20 vil lead but with no army and no map. Does anyone have any general circumstances when it's a good idea to place TC 2 and 3 right when getting to castle age and when is it a good idea to wait? Thank you! submitted by /u/kwintific [link] [comments] |
Full journey or nah? Posted: 17 Jul 2020 09:52 PM PDT So let me just put it out there that my pc is shit. It's a wooden computer and I can only play age of empires 2 hd and not definitive edition. I haven't still purchased any game but I have played when I was little and now persuaded a friend to play along. The thing is before I never played multiplayer so are there actually players online in the hd version? Also if i buy the full bundle will I have a better chance of queuing up with other players on multiplayer or can I use units on multiplayer feom the bundle when my friend hasn't bought it yet? submitted by /u/Pandastico [link] [comments] |
