    T90's Idea

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 07:11 AM PDT

I was watching one of the games cast by T90, and he suggested an interesting proposition; "what if you did not know your opponents civ, until you actually scouted them out?"

Personally I'm not one for making too many changes to the game. However, I thought this was a very interesting idea. He was not advocating for this hardcore, but he suggested that it would be kind of a cool idea. I agree.

    Maybe I'm petty but...

Just resigned a 3v3 because a guy walled in my Monk who beat him to a relic by a tiny thread, and shot it with a Mangonel.

Don't fucking lame your teammates. If someone beat you to a relic, you either accept it or ask them for the relic. What you don't do is kill their monk and make them waste 100 gold because they got to a relic first.

They weren't Lithuanians by the way, not that it would excuse what happened.

Finally beat Barbarossa brawl, if you've had any trouble here's my success story

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 02:30 AM PDT

    I know this was prob very ez for most, but for some reason I just wasn't getting past like 14 minutes left until i switched up my whole strat, just got right on 10 minutes left and got achievement. Here's what I did;

create market on NW path next to monastery to make a narrow path between. use houses too

create enough houses to block west route completely.

send scout to cumans in far east. once market up buy them and send home

send about 4 vils to create TC next to stone up north east. once TC up pump out vils on stone

original tc creating vils to get wood at forest to the south. i just always keep constant vils coming out. if you need switch to food or w/e youre low on (duh)

create 4 barracks by south and palisades to block the spots by the moat path so they are forced into a narrow space (first attack by knights will come from here, just have pikes and use castle fire, you should be good) start pumping out pikes soon as they are built

bring cuman horses back to base

by now you should have enough to create a castle. created one close to TC by the monastery.

first wave should be attacking, shouldn't be a problem if you funnel them in between buildings to the castle, use pikes and cumans to pick them off. send your knights to take out any trebs/catapults

create another castle ASAP, pull all vils if needed. having a castle on east side helps to pick off siege

basically do the same for other waves, use buildings to funnel in enemies and pick them off with pikes up front, horse bows and castles arrow to kill. I found i was able to kill most of the onagers with castles if i just put villagers in the castle and directed fire. only prob was some trebs but like i said pick off with knights or whatever you have

create a few archerys and get some more horse archers. speed is nice here cus ez to outmicro the AI

a few desperate moves at the last second may be needed :)

Gotta say this one was fun actually a challenging event for once (for me anyway lol) if you have any questions lmk

Barbarossa Brawl Pacifist Attempt | The AI Tries To Be Pacifist, Too!

How and when do I transition away from Knights as Franks?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 05:09 AM PDT

I'm still very new (~950 ELO) and am only playing FC Franks while I learn the rest of the game in general.

The Franks feel relatively one dimensional to me with their cavalry focus, and this is fine (even good for initial learning) but it's making it tough to develop an intuition for transitions.

Each game, there is some point where massed pikes/halbs start kicking my ass, and I can't figure out exactly where it is. For some time my Knights are able to just plow through them regardless, and then suddenly my Knights feel garbage.

So Problem 1 is figuring out where that point is and why.

Problem 2 is figuring out what to do about it.

The main question here is --

    • Do I transition at all (because, well, I'm hard countered) OR just keep brute forcing the Knights/Pals eventually (because Franks don't have other good options)?

    • If I do transition, how hard? Like, against masses of halbs... does my unit composition end up 50-50? Still 90% Knights? 90% something else? What's typical, here?

I've had some success with just spamming halbs right back but then a) okay, now I'm just a worse halb civ, and b) it still feels like I can barely use my Knights because halbs can be everywhere due to their cost, and c) now I have to rush to all the upgrades I didn't have just to be on equal footing.

What else is there to transition to, as Franks, that's worth it?

Current contenders are magonels (micro is tough as a newbie tho ;_;) or throwing axes (kinda hard to mass and kind of meh regardless, as far as I can tell), to balance out with the Knights... Would these work?

I find it hard to believe I made it to top score. Is this a bug?

This is the rare picture of Indian Hand cannon used in middle ages. Just somehow found this out in Internet

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 06:59 PM PDT

I like to have AI battles in the background while doing something else. It's interesting to see it adapting to what's happening. This is one of my favourites screenshots. Who said Aztecs don't have cavalry?

I wish you could filter spectatable matches by ELO of the players.

Barbarossa Brawl - having trouble getting the Relic challenge

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 02:30 AM PDT

Disclaimer: my APM is shit. Is there a way to complete this challenge such that even an incredibly slow player with horrible micromanagement can accomplish it?

I'm already playing on Slow, but it's still too tough for me.

I'm following the recommendation of this post, but am having difficult executing it.

I just don't have the APM to have enough pikes / a large enough force to take on Purple, blow up their monastery, and get away with their Relic before I am overrun.

Green is already attacking me about the time I move out, and they seemingly go out of their way to snipe my monks and petards. Then there's the defences purp has as well; a TC and towers raining down arrows that really make me wish I just had more army to work with.

I do grab the Cuman mercs, but I find my army still so fragile.

Anyone have any techniques they find helped them accomplish this more easily?

Question: AOE2 HD AI Ally won't stay Ally

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 08:22 AM PDT

My wife was playing a custom game and allied an AI early on. When they got to the end the Ally changed their status to enemy and began attacking my wife. It requested another 500 of each resource to stay an ally. So she did this again, with allied victory selected it should have ended the game. But the enemy changed to ally and then immediately changed back to enemy and requested 500 of each resource again. She ended up just quitting because she wasted all her resources and units. Is this a bug or just a characteristic of the AI?

    Question about queuing buildings

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 07:25 AM PDT

How do you queue buildings, with a villager that is building something, so that villager keeps building while queuing(instead of starting walking to the newly queued buildings) , then afterwards move to the build new buildings

I saw in a youtube vod that this is possible.

Logical answer would be holding shift, but it doesnt work for me

I only have the the conquerors expantion, not hd or de maybe the problem lies here

[DE] How does this game run on lower-end devices?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 06:44 AM PDT

    Hello,

Im thinking about getting the DE off of Steam but Im wondering if it will run on my Laptop. I dont really care about super fancy graphics as long as Im getting a decent framerate. AoE1 DE runs fine on my PC.

    I have this laptop

It has a Quad Core CPU, a dedicated (but pretty weak) GPU and 8GB of RAM

I also dont really plan to play online, just campaign and random games.

    Thanks

Barbarossa Brawl - How on earth do you survive 20 minutes?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 02:43 AM PDT

I've managed 18 mins a few times, but honestly after blue joins in it's just so hopeless it's not even particularly fun.

I start off slowing down to 1.0, then place two TCs, one by the stone and one by the gold, along with a market. I send my scout up to get the cumans, and bring them down to my castle. I build houses along the northwest and east bridges, then build a castle on the northwest bridge.

I make 10 TKs at the initial castle, and that + the cumans seems to be enough to survive the onslaught of Knights from green with some units left over, sometimes. Sometimes they all just die.

I make about 10 vills at each TC, for food, gold, and stone. I've yet to even get close to running out of wood considering the food limit, so I've not been focusing on that.

I then build a castle on the east bridge, and garrison both castles with 5 TKs. I then basically sit there sniping the seige with the castles to fend off orange and most of purple.

And then I die. Blue comes and sweeps through and destroys the TC. If I try to deal with blue, orange and purple overwhelm me. By this point I'm out of stone, so it's not like I can just build more castles.

I've tried making pikemen from an array of barracks, but I just end up too low on food and they basically do nothing. I've tried going to imp for ETK, but that just uses way too many resources to be even slightly viable. I've tried walling all access, but that just makes the AI go a bit weird and go straight for my vills instead of attempting to take down the castles.

I've got absolutely no idea what on earth I should be doing here, but there just seems to be no way for a noob to get even close to 20 minutes. The blue onslaught comes early enough that it will always overwhelm me, and by that point orange has managed to get my castle down and raided through my gold vills.

Does anyone have any nice consistent strats to get the 20 mins? I'm honestly not really having much fun with this, especially considering there's a ticking clock on the event and I need to get it done for the pretzel mod.

EDIT: I've been at this for 3 hours now, I'm making barely any progress. This isn't very fun. I can't believe AoE2 of all games has a god damn timed unlock system, what's even the point?
