    Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Huns vs Vietnamese, and next up is the Franks vs Goths!

    Franks: Cavalry civilization

    • Castles cost -25%
    • Cavalry +20% hp starting in Feudal Age
    • Farm upgrades free (requires Mill)
    • Foragers work +25% faster
    • TEAM BONUS: Knights +2 LoS
    • Unique Unit: Throwing Axeman (Heavy infantry with short-ranged attack)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Chivalry (Stables work +40% faster)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Bearded Axe (Taxmen +1 range)

    Goths: Infantry civilization

    • Infantry cost -20/25/30/35% per Age
    • Infantry +1/2/3 attack vs buildings in Feudal/Castle/Imperial Age
    • Villagers +5 attack vs boar; hunters carry +15 meat
    • Loom free
    • +10 maximum population in Imperial Age
    • TEAM BONUS: Barracks work +20% faster
    • Unique Unit: Huskarl (Anti-archer infantry)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Anarchy (Train Huskarls at Barracks)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Perfusion (Barracks work +100% faster)

    Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Ohhh boy.... this match up... So, for 1v1 Arabia, Franks are a consistent and strong pick, with a very straightforward game plan, as well as the ability to play both aggressively and defensively. Meanwhile, Goths are occasionally seen sometimes as a niche pick to counter archer civs... but that's about it usually. Do Goths have the ability to shine in a match up where Huskarls are not too likely to be very good?
    • For Arena (and similar maps), neither of these civs are usually considered to be especially strong (Franks more so than Goths). However, both of these civilizations have very powerful armies in the late game when given time to boom. Franks have a better boom than Goths, and additionally can apply pressure better. Do Goths stand a chance here?
    • For team games, Franks are pretty much universally considered a top 3 pick for pocket - in a meta of scouts -> knights -> paladins, it's hard to find a civ more well-suited to that game plan than Franks. However, Goths can be dangerous if given the space to boom, and can be really dangerous when it comes to early laming on a close flank. How do you see these civs fitting into a team game composition?

    Few basic questions from a noob

    Hi guys, I'm sorry if the answers for these I easy to find but I was wondering about the following questions:

    • How many villagers are able to gut a sheep/deer/boar?
    • Same idea but for stone and gold, is it the same number? They look bigger than animals to me
    • How to make sure villagers only kill one sheep at a time?
    • In case a villager kill a second sheep, what's the best strategy to lessen the waste? Split your sheperds in two groups to avoid as much decay as possible?
    • What's the consensus about fishing (with vills?) and hunting deer? Sometimes it seems quite slow compared to just using farms after using up boars/berries so I just skip it. Dunno if it is a noob move but building mills just seem so wasteful
    • Are there any actual purpose for patrolling and military formations?
    • When to get eco technologies? Are some of them just not worth getting?
    • Same kind of idea but what technologies are actually over/underrated? I'm used to research murder holes ASAP for example but I've heard it's actually not all that good
    • How to use militia? They get killed by villagers so easily I don't even bother making them but I've been defeated by drushes so they must have some purpose
    • How many TCs/mills per farm?

    I'm sure I'm forgetting some but it's quite a lot already!

    Cancel production hotkey

    Is there a hotkey to cancel already queued units/tech within a building? For instance, I have over-queued villagers in a TC and then realize that I may already have enough resources to advance to the next age. In this case I have to select the TC and click/shift-click the queued villagers with my mouse to dequeue them. Wondering if this can be done with some hotkey instead.

    Aoe2 on MacOS Catalina 10.15.6

    Hi guys,
    We're a bunch of friends here with Macbooks trying to run Aoe2 on MacOS Catalina. Are there any of you here who were confronted to this problem and found a way to install it correctly ? I have seen some tutorials online but they are too old and do not apply to Catalina.
    Fyi heres my config:

    MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, four Thunderbolt 3 ports)
    2.4 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5
    16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3
    Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655 1536 MB

    Does any one know if I can zoom out on low resolutions? Currently the TC occupies my entire screen.

    Also unrelated problem – the resolution seems to reset every time I start the game, I have to go into the settings and change it every time.

    Is it ride to ask someone to resign when you clearly have them beat and they are simply dragging the game out....?

    Forest Nothing Help Column

    Intro...

    I am a new old player that is addicted to Forest Nothing but I suck at it. So how do you play this game mode?

    There are a few different maps out there but basically its either trees everywhere or trees everywhere with enough space to start farms, houses, etc st the start.

    So questions...

    Whats a good basic build order in each age?

    When do you go for military?

    Should I be trying to get to IMP ASAP?

    What are the best civs for forest nothing and why?

    I generally get as many farms as I can while having house space for villagers a lumber camp and a mill to get to feudal. I then delete a farm for the blacksmith and try to get enough space for a market (generally deleting another farm. Im normally at 25 vills at this point. In castle I go TC Monestaty and siege workshop and I try to fit in another TC if I can to 3TC boom. In Imp I start to build military but by this time I start to hear the onager shots closing in on me and I thhen lose.

    I like the the Khmar because it doesnt matter where the farms are placed and they have good siege and i dont need to have buildings to advance so I can fast imp with them once i get a market. Should I be going chinese or celts over them in this game type?

    Is there any site where we can see in-game statistics (like in voobly) and not just win-loss, profiles or ELO changes?

    Remember those voobly days when we could see each Player's endgame statistics like Score, K/D, Gold collected etc? Is that possible now? I checked and it was not available on Aoe2.net If not why did they remove this feature/API?

    Option to disable 'smart' building hotkeys

    If you hold Q you get barracks.

    If you are spamming the hotkey to build a stable W-E-E-E and it's not available because you're just about to hit fuedal then you get a mining camp.

    Is there an option to disable this behaviour? So that W-E-E-E can only build a stable.
