12 Hour [iL] IamChris Stream Sunday November 22

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 11:59 AM PST

    Hello Everyone!

In order to thank all the subscribers of my Twitch Channel https://www.twitch.tv/iamchris_age2, I will be having a 12 hour stream this Sunday starting at 16 GMT (11 AM EST). The schedule will be

    16:00 - 19:30 GMT 1vs1 Ladder Games

19:30 - 20:00 GMT Casting a Game or Two While Eating Lunch

20:00 - 22:00 GMT SuperMegaRandom 1vs1s with Capoch (Random Civ on MegaRandom Map)

22:00 GMT - 01:00 GMT Subscriber Matches vs Chris (Subscribers can pick any "reasonable" and even many questionable handicaps for Chris, along with the map and the civs). Some entertaining ones in the last subscriber matches included 1v2s, vegan only, deleting 2 vils at the start, eating while playing, no hotkeys allowed, tell my enemy every building I make, and no gold units allowed. THESE WERE NOT AT ALL AT ONCE (Yes I knew you were thinking that!)

01:00 GMT - 04:00 GMT 4vs4 Community Games with Random Civs and Random Teams on a variety of maps

Note that I did not want to do the 12 hour stream while World Cup is going on, but since I don't have another free day where World Cup is not going on, I encourage you all to Dual Watch.

If any other 2200+ players want to join in the SuperMegaRandom session, shoot me a message. We could have a mini group stage where we all play 2-3 games against each other.

I am looking forward to a fun day with a variety of events, see you all there!!

PS. If you have any other interesting ideas for questionable handicaps, post them below and maybe some games will have those in the matches!

My favourite thing about the new BR mode is...

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 07:26 AM PST

the viability of units you don't usually see in ranked games.

Had a really fun game which I lost to someone playing Indians, who massed a hilarious army comp of Elephant Archers, Imp Camels and Hand Cannons. Threw everything I could at them as Incas, and it was like the most fun (and ultimately doomed) campaign mission. Now I want to retry the experience and improve where I went wrong.

Then in another game as Portuguese on the map with water in the middle, Caravels felt like the best unit in the game. I've not had enough water games on the ladder let alone water games as Portuguese, but they really shone here and made me want to play the civ more in future (if the recent buff wasn't enough incentive!).

And then of course there's Ballista Elephants. Love Khmer in general and they're even more fun in BR.

Really hoping we see more support for the mode as I've had a blast messing around with it! It's definitely filled a gap in my eyes.

This Night Edition mod for new UI is a good look. (Seen on BacT’s stream.) Anyone know where/how to get this?

    Opis Pope, I'm Sorry

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 09:53 PM PST

You tried to join a lobby game I hosted and I kicked you out, with out giving an explanation.

My friend is brand new to the game and I am still teaching him the basics of the game so we are playing against super weak AI. I forgot to change the setting to private, and I don't think you would have enjoyed that particular type of game.

However, you did deserve an explanation for why I kicked you and I didn't realize that until after you were out of the lobby.

    For that, I am sorry.

"New" Tatars are quickly becoming my favorite civ!!!

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 10:17 PM PST

Seriously, these recent changes are really good...

They now have a decent boost in food that helps them get to Castle Age early, with an amazing Archer powerspike.

Their Keshiks have really grown on me just by how cost-effective and "tanky" they can be, 130 HP with 2 PA in Castle Age is no joke... They feel better than Knights in almost everything except being created at a Castle. One less Attack and One less Melee Armor for 10 more HP, 35 less Gold and 10 less food!!

And, if the game goes late, you have very decent Camels, Hussars and HCA with more Armor, Keshiks and the most annoying Trebuchets I've ever seen!!

Seriously, I've never been much of a Cavalry Civ lover but Tatars are really starting to grow on me heavily.

If any of you haven't tried out this civ yet, give it a shot!! I recommend opening with scouts into archers, then building up numbers as you to CA... Then enjoy your first powerspike with free Thumb Ring!!

What are Indians supposed to do now?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 02:13 AM PST

I commented on an AOEZone post but my comment got removed somehow (idk), so I'm reposting here.

Barracks - No Plate Barding. No bonuses. Range - No Arbs. No bonus for CA Siege - No Siege Ram, SO or Heavy Scorp Stable - No Knight, Subpar Hussar, Subpar Heavy Camels. Now Imp Camel upgrade is nearly the same cost/time as Paladin but does Bloodlines and +2 attack only.

Castle - Absolute worst UU Ele Archer, No architecture. Sultans is often situational and not that powerful, Shatagni is not civ defining or strong enough to classify Indians as Gunpowder civ. Who even gets that upgrade???

Oh, also no BBT or Keeps or Arrowslits.

Skirms are the only FU trash unit and there is no Powerhouse go to gold unit anymore. Indians already struggled much against Infantry/Meso civs in the previous Meta.. Now it is more so.

If Scouts in Castle Light cav is what Indians are supposed to do, that's very singular and it's exactly what Turks do now + they get light cav free apart from the pierce Armor.

    Boars randomly stopping?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 04:23 PM PST

    Hello r/aoe2!

Has anyone noticed that boars will sometimes stop following the luring villager, irrespective of whether or not the villager is within line of sight? When it happens, it usually happens within a second or two into the chase; however, I just had a game in which the boar stopped about a tile away from the Town Center and immediately began walking back (I did not garrison the luring villager).

It's happening in single-player while I'm practicing build orders, so I'd be shocked if it weren't also happening in multiplayer. I've only began noticing after this latest patch.

Fundamental issues with the newest update List

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 09:16 PM PST

Im gonna try and keep this as a live list, feel free to add below any issue you detect. Or if you'd like to contest any issues posted.

    • Generally, a performance hit compared to the previous patch, notable for general populus around early-mid imperial in 4v4 tg. *Note* Since the game itself has pathing & unit problems (units unable to meet destination or walk into(literally) buildings and get stuck) this can be either server-side, or a combination of both.
    • Menu instability, causing massive lag spikes when certain windows pop-up (ex: civilization selection, confirmation of leaving game window)
    • General community push-back due to negative rework of features such as selecting civs (it now completely blocks the screen rather than partly)
    • General community push-back against the Main-menu's poor implementation
    • Return of some known pathing issues (vil dance), unknown if legacy issues or new issue causing a rise in prominence.
    • Reports of crashing when in civ search menu.
    • Reports of anomalies in gaia unit behaviors - should be noted, but researched for further validity.

What's the point of Quick Play?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 02:46 PM PST

This is an actual question, I'm confused. Obviously it has different game modes, but how does it work for RM? If it doesn't take Elo into consideration, won't it lead to unfair and unfun matches? And if it does, how is it different from ranked? How is it any more quick?

Edit: I just tried it, it wasn't any faster than ranked, and I got matched against someone 400 rating lower, who understandably got mad when I kept killing their villagers. That's not fun for anyone. And it's not even balanced: there are many more players worse than me than players better than me, so this will probably happen often.

Literally what in the fuck did they do to the main menu and matchmaking interfaces?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 06:06 PM PST

They are so incredibly ugly and clunky now, it looks like I'm playing a free mobile game.

I am seriously so astonished and confused right now. It was FINE before.

    Anyone else feel the same?

Small nitpick about Grid-mod and non-official small trees mods (It might ruin these mods for you!)

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 05:13 AM PST

This is a rather small nitpick since I'm only talking about mods, but I wanted to bring it up because I like to keep my game pretty and also usable. Maybe mod makers can figure out how to make their mods prettier when they figure this out.

    The issues:

    1. Grid mod makes the ground textures blurry.
    2. All small tree mods (except the Official one) make trees appear brighter.

    Post-Patch 428248 (Nov 2020) Actual Farming Rates

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 08:34 AM PST

    Post-Patch 428248 (Nov 2020) Actual Farming Rates

Aztecs and Khmer have been nerfed so it is time to assess the farm economy. Surprisingly, their food economy was barely impacted.

    https://preview.redd.it/f7b7m1o2bm061.png?width=1130&format=png&auto=webp&s=f15cff1fe7ba29044f6e3ea71f0e1ba038b94225

And this is how things look percentage-wise:

    https://preview.redd.it/e78f52uhbm061.png?width=1149&format=png&auto=webp&s=1b8da7c4bcf7b0785a069c85923b2101466564c3

    https://preview.redd.it/pnvlhepkbm061.png?width=717&format=png&auto=webp&s=b228b894a63fd1a5433a8af2483a35a01ad12d3c

The data is gathered using 6 farmers per civ farming with no gap to a mill for 10 minutes each, with averages taken after 10 tests. Compared to other such surveys, mine found a few surprises:

    • The base farming rate is not 20 but the much lower 19
    • Civs no longer get capped around ~24 after Full Upgrades. Instead, all civs with farm bonuses (Aztec, Khmer, Slav, Berber) start ahead and just remain ahead of generic civs all the way
    • Khmer farming is almost always superior to Slav farming even when farms are perfectly placed. Slav farming only gains a temporary lead for a short window during the Castle Age
    • Khmer is still the best farm civ after the nerf
    • Aztecs farmers are no longer better than Slavs. Aztecs are worse than Slavs after the nerf
    • Most surveys ignore Heavy Plow. However, heavy plow has a significant impact of around 4%, which is reduced to 3% after Wheelbarrow, and 1% after Handcart. Therefore Heavy Plow is a major contributor that should never be left out.
    • Berber faster walking villagers is approximately equal to Heavy Plow. It improves base farming by 4%, which is reduced to 3% after Wheelbarrow, and 1% after Handcart
    • The Mayan farm penalty is now enormous. Without any techs, it is only around -1%, but grows to as much as -8% when all civs are FU.
    • Hand Cart now proves a much larger buff than Wheelbarrow. Previous farm surveys showed Wheelbarrow being stronger than Hand Cart. But now Hand Cart is the single biggest farming buff in the game.

    Feedback on the UI/UX

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 04:19 PM PST

    Hello

There are dissatisfactions with the UI's animation speed or artstyle but I'd like to briefly expand on what I consider to be the bigger problem which relates to the menus and buttons and their relevance, relateness and repetition. I'm sure most of you have noticed these but it might be helpful to compile all the problems noticed and give constructive feedback.

For those who want a quick tl;dr take a look here and for the way i see the relations check out this quick doodle

I'll do my best to describe them verbally and feel free to comment with anything i missed or described inaccurately.

    • CANCEL and RETURN buttons look exactly like buttons which describe menus themselves and they're inserted in such a way they appear to give the impression of another game type or option menu. at the same time X exists which performs the same function on the modal menus.

    • MULTIPLAYER options exist in a modal and below the player options on the main menu. SINGLEPLAYER options exist in a modal and via LEARN TO PLAY. if concentrating all play-options in modals was the idea, having others appear elsewhere in the main menu defeats that purpose.

    • MODS options exist in the PROFILE menu and in the settings gear menu

    • both MODDING options are quite hidden and relate more to EDITORS than where they're located

    • the SETTINGS gear menu has OPTIONS along with credits, history and mods which aren't as related

    • PROFILE options exist in the multiplayer lobby panels (clans, leaderboards) which relate to the ones in the main menu's profile modal featuring player search, mutes, bans, stats. they all describe community/social views and options

    • LOAD GAME button exists in the LEARN TO PLAY menu as well as the SINGLE PLAYER menu and it also features REPLAY viewing but not MP saves

    • ADDITIONAL RESOURCES from the LEARN TO PLAY menu might as well be next to NEWS or clicking the logo of the main menu since it accesses the webside directly (not a specific learn to play subsection)

    • RESTORE GAME option exists within MULTIPLAYER modal as well as the panes accessed through the FIND CUSTOM GAME button

    • the FIND CUSTOM GAME button opens the LOBBY BROWSER (unranked) but RANKED button opens RANKED menu

    • HOST GAME button from the MP modal and CREATE LOBBY button from the LOBBY BROWSER do the same thing

    • ART OF WAR buttons only light up slightly instead of clearly using complementary colors to show which button's selected

    • in OPTIONS menu clicking between panels works smoothly except for the HOTKEYS panel which briefly turns the screen black when clicking on. Other menus like the multiplayer panels have the same issue.

    • for a newcomer LEARN TO PLAY may be straight but WILLIAM WALLACE means nothing and deprives them of viewing the european map

    • HISTORICAL BATTLES can only be found by clicking the africa map, despite the icon opening a new map which features splinters of the entire world. it could've been a WORLD entry

Obviously there's a lot more work left to improve the overall structure such as wireframes and sequence diagrams as well as the performance problems, art and animation type & speed but hopefully the devs will come through as they have for the great work done so far!
