[SPOILER] Leaked Balance Changes on today's Battle Royal Tourney

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 03:25 PM PDT

I have a confession to make...

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 05:04 AM PST

I've never been able to do "Into China" fairly. How have you people been able to do it? I've tried building a resource base in the northern corner but it always gets taken out.

Is anyone else super streaky in ladder games?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 07:08 PM PDT

Some days I will win all 5 or 6 games I play, and climb to 1000 or 1050 then the next day I will get absolutely wrecked all day and shoot back down to 850. Does this happen to you guys?

What civ match-ups would you recommend I play against the AI with? I'm looking for some historically plausible matches for some fun even if it's unbalanced.

    Incan Eagles

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 02:28 AM PST

I think most would agree that Incan Eagles are a tier below both the Aztec and Mayan Eagles once they hit post-imp.

Fabric Shields turns them into huskarls (+10 pa) taking 60 arrows to kill. Unfortunately the extra +1 melee does little to help them out in all other melee engagements.

Compared to the Mayan +40 hp bonus that helps them tank arrow fire and melee damage the Incan bonus is lacking.

I play Incas a fair bit and I'm not suggesting that we need to buff them to be the 'go to' Incan unit. But maybe give them a clearer indentity against the Aztec and Mayan Eagles.

What would people think if Incas and had the fastest eagles? Maybe Fabric Shields gives a 10-15% speed boost as well. Slightly faster eagles would help against one of Inca's biggest counters in siege.

Do other people think Incan Eagles need a point of difference? Thoughts?

    Xolotl Warrior for Mayans

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 01:59 AM PDT

In the new Battle Royale mode, if yoy capture a camp which has stable, you can create Xolotl Warriors as Matans too. The Xolotl Warrior wasn't locked for Mayans. The tool to unlock it (Redemption to convert stables) wad locked. In this mode, buildings are converted like Monuments.

What is the one element of aoe2 you feel you are best at that gives you a competitive advantage in your rated games?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 03:52 AM PST

Just played a game at my 1000 Elo where I came up against a guy who went full hoang on me with knights, mangonels and monks, new exactly what he was doing, had great micro etc.

I somehow survived with mass pike man and a few knights. Came back and won the game almost exclusively because I produced more than him. He got to imp way before more but somehow only topped out an max army of 60 which I doubled.

This guy was clearly better at me in micro, scouting, sending multiple raids out at once, but he didn't create enough production buildiggs, or select all and shift queue. I honestly feel like my ability to do this was the only reason I one the game.

What is your biggest strength as an aoe player that carries you in games? Just interested to see what things people find gives them the biggest advantage, even if they are out played in other areas

Now that we have had our first taste of Battle Royale, what are your thoughts about it?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 09:25 AM PDT

In my opinion It'd be a great way to get friends into the game and (hopefully) a good way to quickly get a game without hanging out in queue for too long - though possibly longer queuetimes for normal games as a result?

    Thoughts on Battle Royale

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 05:08 AM PST

Battle Royale was showcased yesterday in a 16p tournament which was (surprisingly) won by T90. Congrats to him! It looks like great fun, but as Viper said it's not exactly perfectly competetive. This is fine for what looks to be a casual game mode, but it is still desirable to make civs roughly equally strong so that winners and losers aren't decided by what civs they get. This will probably be something devs look into once more game data is available, but some preliminary thoughts are:

    • Unit balance: Mobility and Siege seems heavily favoured on essentially all maps. Arbalests, Champions, Skirms and Hussars saw very little play. Access to strong Paladins, HCA or SO was often a determining factor in the power of a civ. To increase the variety in game play, maybe stats or prices should be altered to ensure unit diversity.
    • Relating to the previous point, civs with access to multiple power units also performed well, such as Teutons with SO and Paladin, or Magyars with HCA and Paladin. Compare this to for instance Vikings or Britons, who lack any super powerful unit to utilize.
    • Some maps were dominated by ships, which aggravates the issue of civ balance even further. Civs that lack Bracer, or even worse Bracer + Galleon (Malians) are at a significant disadvantage from the start of the match. Compare rolling Malians into Vikings, Portuguese, Saracens, Koreans, Byzantines, ..., and the game is set to be frustrating. Either water balance need to be improved for this game mode, or water should be less impactful on deciding the winner.
    • The changing of ownership of buildings could be made more clear, so that the distance needed to maintain control is visible. Also, maybe a short time window of 1-3 seconds could be added before switching control?
    • The colour grey was very similar to Gaia. Either Gaia or grey should be changed to improve visibility.
    • I am surprised that an AoE2 BR lacks any building component. It would be interesting to add the possibility of building fortifications to further incentivise going for the middle and buckling up (but risking being attacked by multiple opponents like Viper was in the Finals).

Are there any other ideas, hopes or worries from what we saw at the tournament?

When does it makes sense to forage bush instead of shore fish?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 03:09 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I had an insight about what would make it so that you would not spend as many villagers as possible to gather from a fast food resource.

    Basically, it's travel time.

The amount of active gather time you would spend to gather from all of your food is fixed, but the amount of travel time varies depending on the number of villagers you send.

Twice as many villagers sent, twice as much villager time

forage bushes and shore fish I picked as examples, because they aren't self propelled like herdables or huntables, and so you have to move villagers to them in order to harvest them. They also don't decay at all, meaning that more villager seconds per second doesn't get you more work time per worksite.

I haven't thought of a good way to say when the distance is too far to walk, but I can think of an easy case where is it is only worth it to send one villager to a fast food resource.

If the resource gathers instantly, you should only send one villager, as the villager time needed to gather it is just the travel time.

AoE2 doesn't have anything close to instant gather rate for resources, so gather time per villager for a resource patch is on the order of minutes before pathing causes gather rates to slow down, so there are no cut and dry examples.

That said, AoE3 has crates that you gather resources at 20x of the rate of world resources, in amounts that are worth while (700 resoirces) but fairly quickly broken down (100 villager seconds to break down that, which means that having 4 villagers on it means that they break down the crates in 25 seconds, which means that taking 5 seconds to get there starts to matter, particularly if you end up spending 5 seconds to walk back to a different work site.

Honestly, the more likely example in AoE2 is why it is worth it to avoid multi villager building one building to some degree, particularly for things like houses, which only have 25 villager seconds of work when build by one villager. ... aside from the 1/3 builder efficiency past the first villager on a project.

How do i learn to micro archers

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 04:31 PM PDT

    Hey,

I am 1200-1300 elo rating and what keeps me from getting better is mostly microing archers. I can feudal rush okayish but as soon as the opponent also has archers and microes them I am losing... I know I have to dodge the arrows of his archers and fire back but I simply don't manage to do that well enough. What is the best way to learn this or how did you guys learn it?
