Aztec may be trash 1v1, but they have a lot of value as a support civ on a 4v4 team

Was watching a streamer and someone in Twitch chat was asking how to play Aztec, to which the streamer said if you want to play Aztec just uninstall the game because Aztec is trash.

And that got me thinking. I can see how Aztec is really bad 1v1 because their units are pretty underwhelming. Your melee units just get kited. Your civ doesn't really have any fancy quirks. War huts/nobel huts doubling as outposts and barracks doesn't help, because the build limit actually hinders you late game, unlike Russia where you can train infantry instantly.

In 4v4 though, you have more ability to specialize. In the early game, you have a lot of support cards to help your team. if you get a fast age 2 you can immediately ship everyone 3 villagers early on to get them going, which is a huge eco boost especially when combined with other early team eco boost cards like Japan's.

Then in age 3 and 4 you team coin shipment cards that provide a lot of value to teammates.

Late game, your arrow knights are especially good. They are like culverin and howitzers in one, but with the mobility of ordinary infantry. If you can depend on your teammates to handle other units, spamming these can be pretty broken to push forward and deal with artillery. And since they're uber long range, they won't die as much, so your 7 nobel hut/war hit limit won't be as big of a deal.

    Lot fewer crashes, backend fixed?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 01:22 AM PST

I don't know if you guys have noticed it as well, but I haven't had a crash in a week or more, when I used to get a crash almost every other game. I've had multiple games run past an hour, and haven't had any issues.

Did the dev team fix any issues? I haven't seen a patch, so I imagine it must be a server-side update if anything?

    [OC] Guide to Deathmatch

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 11:25 AM PST

    What is Deathmatch?

Deathmatch is a game mode in AOE3 where you start with a decent chunk of resources and seek to build up as fast as possible.

Typically, you start in post-industrial age, with all non-imperial upgrades already researched. You also cannot age up to Imperial or Revolt. This means that all of your civilization's units will be Guard status, and you can send industrial age shipments ASAP. This also makes Asian civs comparably weaker than European civs, because you can't build any wonders!

There's also no trade monopoly win in Deathmatch! Hooray!

    About this guide

I'm specifically going to be talking about 1v1 here.

Combining armies and 2v1ing people can drastically change the available strategies... Team games are less about economies and more about army positioning, rotation, and map control.

    Economy

The first misconception about Deathmatch is that you "just build an army and attack" and whoever wins that attack, wins the game.

    This is fundamentally incorrect.

The key to Deathmatch is building both military AND economy as fast as possible. Your starting resources might pay for 2 full armies. If you're in a fight for more than 5 minutes -- all your initial resources are gone, and you'll need to get more food or gold ASAP.

    General Build Order

The opening of DM is the most intense part of any game in AOE.

This build is pretty standard for every civ:

    1. Select a villager, start building houses. I shift-click about 3-5 before getting the next villager started on work, then go back to queue up the rest. Sweden - build torps around mines. Japan - build shrines near hunts on the map.

    2. Fill up the queue on your TC for villagers.

    3. Select another villager (or 2), build a church. Send the XP upgrade when it completes which gives you 5-6 shipments. Insanely powerful. We'll talk about shipments later.

    4. Next 3 villagers, queue up barracks, stables, and artillery foundries. I do about 3 each, close to the town center, and then build forward bases as I get map control.

    5. With the explorer-- A) if there are natives on the map, go build trade posts, then build town centers. B) otherwise, start building town centers, THEN go build trade routes.

    6. As villagers train from your town center, send a few more to work on the government housing project. Send 2-3 to start building walls. As time is of the essence, I recommend looking up a walling guide to make pillarless walls (like this one) which build faster and less susceptible to splash damage.

    7. Send Minutemen from your town center around the 30sec-1min mark. attack-move them across the map to scout for enemy forward bases.

    8. Start building some outposts in front of your production.

    Building an Army...

As soon as your first few military buildings complete, you'll start pumping out units. Muskets / skirms + goons/heavy cav are nice. The more important thing to defend a rush are cannons. I build 5 culverins and 5 horse artillery immediately.

    Shipments

The first shipment I send is Stonemasons. Improved building time is huge in Deathmatch, as you have a lot of buildings to build in not much time.

Next, send Infantry, Cavalry, and Artillery training time cards if available.

After that, send any fundamental cards to a civ's army. Ie. dragoon range / artillery for ports, Fort building musketeers for russians, cheaper army units for anyone who has it (ie. cheaper janisaries for ottos)...

    Example Decks

I do not send my factories until AFTER I have a wall up. All it takes is a run by of some cavalry or some petards to ruin your day there, as factories are an important part of your economy.

    Economy

British have the best economy in Deathmatch. Building Manors gives you 20 villagers right off the bat, and then with the Estates card, you train 23 villagers at a time.

Germans can also build 3 mills and start pumping settler wagons with Germantown Farmers

Without imperial upgrades available, hunts and mines are always going to be the best option for resources. You should be able to strip the map of these fairly quickly, and then transition to mills and estates.

While your initial army may be 150+ pop, as you lose military units you should slowly replace them with villagers. An evenly-matched, economic Deathmatch game should eventually look like a treaty game (stuck in industrial), with 2 maxed economies, walls, and about 100 pop armies.

    Conclusion

Deathmatch is fun. It's fast, you get big army fights without waiting 40 minutes, and if you play it right, you also build an economy comparable to treaty games. Map control is extremely important, as is your general actions per minute. It punishes people who spam units, as one of the key components is to take efficient fights and preserve units.

    Definitely try it out!

    Instant cavalry??

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 06:27 PM PST

I have never really played as Russia but I did a 1v1 on Great Plains and I used the cavalry train time card, train time upgrade in the church, and also the train time upgrade when I created a native trading post and all my cavalry literally came out instantly. Was it always like this for certain civs?

Any tips for playing the Dutch?

I'm still a novice but after picking up age3de I've been wondering how to actually play my favorite civ. I played them back in age3 original but wasn't very good. For reference, I mainly do team fights.

    ROF

Is 8 damage with 1.5 ROF doing the same damage as 16 damage with 3 ROF? Thinking about Macehualtin.

    Deck Size

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 06:24 PM PST

So I wanted to play some skirmish free for all with AI, have plenty of cards, but the trick to get some extra cards (more than 25) in your deck, isn't working anymore. Anyone knows how to change it to 44, like on the original aoe3?
