Any help appreciated on why my game freezers please

Since the Birthday update, my game periodically (quite frequently) freezes for 1-2 seconds, catches up quickly (like it is in fast-forward) and then carries on as normal.

It does this in single-player campaign, skirmish and multiplayer. So it is not my connection (which is stable and good anyway). My PC is more than capable of running the game in Ultra.

This makes ordinary tasks hard when it happens such as luring the boar or building a wall. So forget things like quick walling and microing an army. 1-2 seconds doesn't sound like a lot but it's the difference between a mangonel wiping out all your archers or moving knights away from pikeman in time. Plus it's crazily infuriating.

I have included my settings and mods below if anyone can see anything obvious that might be causing this, please?

How to get to out of 1200 elo if you're stuck.

    Posted: 22 Dec 2020 10:42 PM PST

Okay, so I've seen a few people talking about how hard this is. I'm no pro by any means but these are some tips I picked up when I started which helped me learn quickly.

    1. Learn a build order and perfect it. Hera has some great videos in his zero to 2k youtube series, another great player to learn from on YouTube is TaToh. I'd avoid SpiritOfTheLaw etc. unless you want to know the math behind the builds. After you have one down you can learn more but it's good to start with one over learning ten at the same time.

    2. When you lose think about why and try to rectify that for next game. Were you open on one side
and didn't protect it? was your army out of position? Should you have made a castle on that hill?
Did you keep making archers when they were full skirms? Was there an easy opportunity to wall
and you didn't take it? Did you scout your opponent too late? Etc. Etc. It's a really great habit to
get into and will help you go up the ranks very quickly

    3. Find someone your elo who is willing to do 1v1's with you and I mean like 5+ in a row regardless
of who wins. Then repeat that as many times a day you can. (If they are slightly better than you
to begin with it is better: this gave me my biggest elo jump of 200
      points in under a week).

If any of you are 1500+ and are looking for someone to practice with, I'd be up for getting better too. Drop me a message.

    Have a great Christmas guys.

    Quick Question

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 07:19 AM PST

Does anyone know if this is cross save via the windows 10 / steam version? My cheap gamepass is almost up , so was thinking of getting them on steam while I can on sale so I own them, since I won't be renewing gamepass.

Merry dance of the villagers, but for how long?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 04:56 AM PST

As much as I appreciate the beautiful choreography that is executed with delightful precision I cannot help but wonder how long until our villagers stop doing the half circle bump high five that is rather reminiscent of partnered swing dancing popularised in the 1930's and 40's.

What did you do to get significantly better in this game? Or what specifically was it that boosted your playstyle to the next level?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 06:05 AM PST

Just wondering about above questions, playing occassionally with Friends online, very casual, rough idea about build orders but executing them poorly, get overwhelmed quickly from castle age on. What was it for you that changed your gameplay to the next level? Learning build orders to proper way? Watching videos? Don't really get better by just playing the game..

Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 10 Week 16: Khmer vs Tatars

    Posted: 22 Dec 2020 10:39 PM PST

A slightly early merry Christmas everyone :)

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Cumans vs Teutons, and next up is the Khmer vs Tatars!

    Khmer: Siege and Elephant civilization

    • No buildings required to Age up or to unlock other buildings
    • Farmers continuously add food to your stockpile without needing to drop off at TCs/Mills
    • Battle Elephants move +10% faster
    • Villagers can garrison in Houses (5 max.)
    • TEAM BONUS: Scorpions +1 range
    • Unique Unit: Ballista Elephant (Can cut down trees I guess)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Tusk Swords (Battle Elephants +3 attack)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Double Crossbow (Ballista eles and Scorps fire an additional projectile)

    Tatars: Cavalry Archer Sheep civilization

    • Herdable animals (i.e. Sheep) last +50% longer
    • Town Centers spawn 2 Sheep upon researching Feudal Age; additional TCs spawn 2 Sheep upon completion
    • Units deal an additional +25% damage when fighting from higher elevation
    • Thumb Ring, Parthian Tactics free
    • TEAM BONUS: Cavalry Archers +2 LoS
    • Unique Unit: Keshik (Cheap medium cavalry unit that slowly generates gold when fighting other units)
    • Unique Unit: Flaming Camel (anti-cavalry, anti-elephant petard unit that is built at the Castle)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Silk Armor (Scouts, Steppe Lancers, and Cav Archers receive +1/+1 armor)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Timurid Siegecraft (Trebuchets +2 range; enables Flaming Camels)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Okay glad this one is post anniversary patch! For 1v1 Arabia and similar maps, both of these civs are considered to be quite strong these days. Khmer did receive a bit of a nerf, but elephants were more commonly seen in TGs anyway - they still have a sic eco, great scorps, good cav, and access to Arbs. Tatars meanwhile are the talk of the town these days with their unending earlygame food supply. Beyond that, they have a pretty broad tech tree with a lot of mobility, as well as a sick UU. Which civ do you favor on this classic type of setting?
    • In team games, Khmer were up until recently one of the very best pocket civs, but they did take a hit to their elephant speed and farming eco. Regardless, they still are very strong. Tatars meanwhile have that amazing early game eco and a broad stable tech tree - even a great cav UU. However, they do lack that Paladin upgrade. Which civ do you prefer as pocket?

Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Chinese vs Japanese. Hope to see you there! :)

    Achievement hunting: Turkish delight

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 08:20 AM PST

I'm on a bit of a crusade to achievement hunt and am about 80% of the way through all of them. This one is by far the hardest. I do my best not to look up walkthroughs or youtube vids. here's how I did it after much trial and error:

    - Find all military willing to join you at game start. Max your food on vills and send all to mine the stone camps to the south of your base.

    - Send a posse of 2 vills to Karesi's base to the north. once the countdown begins, send the vills in to build a castle north of their TC and another in the main street where their military buildings are. Build a uni back home and research murder holes. When the time runs out and no alliance is made, your castles will cripple his military production so he isn't sending seige rams after your base. if you don't get all the buildings, you can send a force later to clean them up. blue eventually sends trebs and kills your castles but hopefully the damage has been done and Karesi is too weak to pose any problems for you

    - Wall off your base and create an open wall funnel to the west securing the gold pile. Cyan, yellow turks and the byzantines will come through there. 2-3 castles is enough to eat up what they throw at you. Keep an eye out for blue's Trebs and bombard cannons. Cyan will eventually build champions and send 4 trebs. If they get set up, they will 1-shot most of your buildings so go imp and keep hussars on patrol.

    - Do all the cav archer upgrades and mass them with 4 BBCs and chip away at yellow to the south while maintaining a watch on your base. had to do many saves and reloads to make this happen. There's gold and wood down there so as you get refugee vils, send them down there to keep your resources up. protect the monks with relics that come in also. i ended the game with 4.

    - The byzantines to the west and north aren't too bad but its worth taking them out because their attacks now consist of cataphracts, 5 monks, 2 trebs and 2 BBCs along with a shit ton of halbrediers. After the first byzantine castle falls, the Catalan company establishes itself to the north and sends Cavaliers, cannonners and halbs at you. They also set up shop near cyan. Take out cyan and by now all the turkish forces have surrendered. When you finish the last byz castle AFTER all 3 turkish factions are down, the achievement triggers.

i found that you simply have to take someone out early because once they all go imp and send trebs, it is impossible to keep up. they simply treb down your walls, mass in and kill you. Karesi is the best one to kill first because he's weakest and the siege rams are a bitch to deal with later. Oh, and the Byzantines can wololo your BBCs from far away which is ridiculous because they are seige units and monks are supposed to only be able to convert siege from close.

What is the best Civ for 9x Civ bonus mod?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2020 11:32 PM PST

It's 9x civ bonus and not 9x Tech.

Eg. Lithuanians bonus of +1 attack per Relic would be now +9

Ideas to play with a friend?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 12:52 AM PST

A friend of mine just started to play aoe2 and I would love to play together with him. I am a decent player (elo: 11xx) and he is completly new, and he does not want to invest time to improve (like learning BO, hotkeys, etc.). At the moment we played a few games against 2 moderate AIs - the problem is that it is extremly boring for me, and for him it is an extremly stressfull game (but he also does not want to much help from my side), so none of us has a good time when we play together.

Do you guys have any suggestions which game modes we could try?

Archer civs subjectively inferior in lower to mid elo (below 1600)

    Posted: 22 Dec 2020 01:12 PM PST

I've been finding from here that win-rates at lower to mid levels are a lot higher with cav civs like franks, berbers or huns than with archer civs like britons or mayans.

I personally am 1100 and enjoy winning with xbow deathballs in castle age, but i find that it's a lot easier and more consistent to win with scouts into knights or some variant of that. It's also honestly more fun and less frustrating, since going archers requires much more micro + upgrades + attention + walling, and if your base gets raided, you can't just defend so easily with your big slow xbow mass.

    Any opinions?

Is campaign progress synced in steam cloud?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2020 11:21 PM PST

Hello, I just bought the game in Steam and I want to ask if the campaign progress is synced to the steam cloud and if it will be available if I ever change PC (or uninstall and reinstall the game). I've read various old posts that say they don't sync but I don't know if this was an old bug which has been fixed or if it is how things work. Also, do I need to connect to xbox live for syncing ability (I don't really want to) or is it just for those who want to find their friends from their xbox live account?

P.S. I've played the original game many years ago only in single player and I'm really happy to join the community to this improved remaster. Looking forward to being able to play ranked games with all of you when my skills are improved enough!
