    CATAPHRACTS (OC)

TIL that 'elo' is not an acronym (as I assumed) but refers to the creator of the system, Arpad Elo, a physics professor.

Burgundians are going to be a good slinging civ, since their eco upgrades are available 1 age earlier.

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 10:10 PM PST

It's a popular strategy for 1 player on a team to advance to feudal and then send their extra resources to their ally.

Bergundians will have an advantage here because they have:

    • Coinage available in Feudal Age (reduces the cost of sending tribute)

    • the 2nd wood upgrade (the best "bang for your buck" upgrade - pays itself off quickly)

    • hand cart and heavy plow (they improve farming, although the payoff takes a bit longer)

    • gillnets could be very useful if there are ponds (a way to make more eco units without more TCs; fish traps can be quite good value)

    • caravan could be situationally useful (another way to make more eco units without more TCs, although they are quite expensive)

You would expect Burgundians to go Castle Age (since they currently have knights which return 50% of their gold cost when they die - a good bonus), but this could be a good surprise strategy (maybe in 3v3s or 4v4s).

How does a trash build work?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 05:55 AM PST

I'm talking about a feudal age trash all in.

What's the idea? You are making a ball of units that don't really threaten villagers. It seems really high risk low reward play. But there must be a point, otherwise people wouldn't do it. Granted, it's not too popular, so it's not the best thing ever. But surely, there must be some reasoning behind it. After all, I've seen some pros try it in tournament games.

In what situations might this be a good strategy? Or is it ever?

Do you add towers? Do you get upgrades? I suppose you will continue producing and try to overwhelm the opponent. Maybe add scouts later? What is the win condition? Is it to starve the opponent from resources, since you won't easily kill villagers? Clearly you aren't aiming for a faster castle time either. Is vill fighting part of the plan?

Does anyone have a build order?

Does the AI essentially cheat at higher difficulties?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 01:15 AM PST

I just played a pretty long and hard fought 1v1 castle age game against the AI on hardest. It was a meat grinder of them spamming plumed archers, and at this point in the game there was nothing left resource-wise except trees and farming, I also had 3 relics. So at this point my forces were mostly those that don't need gold: skirmishers, light cav, and pikemen.

I thought it odd that the AI was able to continue spamming plumed archers as they cost gold. Well when I finally overcame the AI I saw no gold left on their side of the map and only 1 relic. Looking at the achievements afterwards I saw that I'd beaten them in every resource gathered by a long shot: 253k wood against their 112k, about the same for food, and 75k gold against their 35k.

How else besides cheating is it possible for the AI to continue spamming units that cost gold so late in the game?

To Leitis or not to Leitis?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 02:41 AM PST

I've really enjoyed playing as the Lithuanians recently. The relic minigame adds a fun dimension to games, their food bonus can smooth out any kinks in Dark Age or kickstart a drush, and best of all Leitis are a beautiful unit to look at when running round the field (the most important factor).

Speaking of Leitis, I'm curious to hear what everyone's decision making is when deciding whether to focus on the Knight line or Leitis. Against someone like the Franks (which, let's face it is 90% of game at the moment) Leitis feel like a superb option (providing you have at least a couple of castles). Facing archer heavy civs, Paladin is clearly a better choice though on account of their superior PA, especially post Leitis nerf.

What about when facing large numbers of halbs, or eagles, or champions? Is the cost effectiveness of the Leitis enough to negate it's relatively weaker stats pound for pound vs the Paladin, or does the ability to mass knight numbers relegate the Leitis to more of a specific counter to heavily armoured units?

Anyone else having issues with the scenario editor crashing in AoE2:DE?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 08:15 AM PST

Playing single player or multiplayer runs fine for me, no issues, but when I try to use the editor I get a hard crash to desktop with no error message within 5-10 minutes, making it pretty much unusable. I've tried messing with the graphics settings and disabling the enhanced graphics dlc but nothing seems to affect it

    Thanks

As an Aoe2 DE player, would you recommend the AoeDE and Aoe3DE?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 07:50 AM PST

Hi guys. The Steam winter sale is nearly over, and I wonder if I should buy the Definitive Editions package on sale.

I did play AoE as a kid for years until AoE2 came out. AoE3, I did not play. Stuck to Conquerors and later the HD edition.

I love the units, graphics, soundtrack, campaigns, and custom campaigns in Aoe2DE. Is it worth venturing into the Definitive Editions of the other two games?

    Krepost bonus damage?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 02:28 AM PST

I was speccing a game today where a player made a forward krepost. I noticed the buildings it targeted were going down extremely fast compared to what I intuitively expected. around 65 hp per volley. it was completed stone gates and towers if its relevant

the stats were 9 (4) attack, so that's 9x4 - building armor? how could there be 65 damage per volley? is this just castle type attribute that I have never noticed before (like a bonus damage vs buildings)

How do I play Teutons with how expensive their gold stuff is?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 06:25 PM PST

I noticed a TON of their stuff, especially Monks and Castle units require a lot of gold, both for creating and for the techs. How are you supposed to engage in the late game without running out of gold insanely fast?
