Insights which have helped me both alleviate my ladder anxiety and effectivise my progress of improving at the game

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 03:11 AM PST

tl;dr you need to decide what a loss means to you before you enter the matchmaking queue. If you don't do that then your subconscious will do it for you and you might feel bad.

    1. Preface / Some things which are worth being kept in mind

    1.1 Build orders aren't everything

There are some attitudes that just knowing build orders will get you to 1500 elo – and I have come across some asserting just that in the AoE forums for instance. But there is undeniably a considerable amount of basic skills which needs to be mastered in order to pull off a perfect build order in the first place.

These are details like being able to use hotkeys automatically (not needing to think about the), keeping idle time under sufficient check, and keeping production up.

Other skills which are just as pivotal to winning games in AoE2 are decision making, map control, army control and micro management, as well as good economical management throughout the game.

1.2 Knowledge does not equal competence

Having theoretical knowledge about the game is one thing and being able to put that knowledge to use is another.

Using myself as an example here, I lost a 1v1 game because I didn't secure enough map control and the enemy was able to gain control of the gold and subsequently win the game. Despite that fact, I am quite sure I already knew the importance of map control before this match.

Unfortunately for me, simply having that knowledge did not translate to being competent in regards to map control in this match. There can be several reasons for this knowledge not transcending into competence. In my case, I was likely too focussed on other details such as army control and economy management at the expense of map control.

I think being conscious of what we know and of how much of it is knowledge or competence helps understanding our progress of getting better at the game and also alleviates focussing on the things we know but have not quite yet mastered how to do.

    1. My insights of what to do and what not to do

2.1 Stronger opponents provide the best learning opportunity which should be taken advantage of

You will always learn better from playing against opponents who are stronger than you as opposed to playing against opponents who are weaker than you. Stronger opponents will put you to the test and force you to push and expand your limits while weaker opponents will give you an easy time and not as many valuable lessons.

With this in mind I have found that it is easier to not dread playing against a stronger opponent and instead looking forward to it.

2.2 Don't let your losses go to waste

Losing a game is never as nice as winning a game. But, and I know this might seem paradoxical, I have found that losing a game can be more valuable for improvement.

As tempting as it is to just quickly exit the game and re-enter the queue once you've lost a match, there is a useful habit I have developed in how I react to losing a match. Once I've lost a game, I at the very least take a minute to reflect upon why I lost the game and ask myself two questions:

'What was it I did or did not do which made me lose the game?'

'What could I have done differently which might have changed the outcome?'

I don't leave the game behind me until I have a clear answer to myself of why I lost the game and what I've learned from it. This is not so much dwelling on the past as it is preparing for the future.

If necessary I also review the match by watching the recorded game. This allows me more clearly to see exactly how I played as well as how the opponent played. Replays (and especially CaptureAge with which we can now see idle time) I find are very valuable tools to help find out what I did or didn't do during a match and how the opponent was able to use that to their benefit.

    2.3 Learn by doing

I have found that most effective way to actually improve at the game is to keep playing. Watching videos and streams of pro players' POV gameplay or casted top level games might give theoretical insights and turn me into a knowledgeable player.

But the only way to learn how to put those insights to use and become a competent player is by me myself playing and putting the knowledge I have to the test (to see whether it's merely knowledge or if I can't make it into competence).

Another important realization I have come to is that unless you have a stronger player to spar and practice with, getting better at ranked 1v1s without actually playing ranked 1v1s is unlikely at best. As much as the AI is getting incremental improvements in patches, it is not able to challenge you as well as a human can. This can be less true for really low level (<800) players to whom simply drilling build orders against the AI can give them an edge. I nonetheless encourage everyone regardless of elo rating to try out playing in the ladder. I have found at least that playing against humans is a vastly more enjoyable experience than playing against an AI.

    1. Conclusion

I think that if we don't deliberately address to ourselves the meaning of entering and then losing a match, our subconsciousness will do it for us, and not necessarily in a good way.

Maybe you feel awfully nervous going into a ranked game, and then terribly frustrated once you lose a game. If that is the case, there is chance there is a belief rooted deep within you, put there by your subconsciousness. That belief is that winning is the only acceptable outcome, and that if you lose you have failed as a human being. Sounds preposterous, right? But if you had that subconscious belief – maybe unbeknownst to you - before going into a game, getting rid of that feeling of dread after a loss can be easier said than done. "It's just a game" we can try telling ourselves at that point, but if the sense of dread has walked into the room and pulled up a chair and sat down, it won't leave easily.

I think my insights offer a somewhat tangible solution to this unwanted fear of losing. We should bring up this belief from our subconscious (bring it up whether we think it's there or not) and put it in the light, and address it to ourselves. An important part is that we do this before we enter into a ranked game and not afterwards.

A rooted belief in the subconscious won't go away by simply saying "no" to it. We need to address the question marks the belief claims to answer. Accomplishing this might be easier by viewing the belief not as a inanimate object but instead as a living part of ourselves. Don't speak at it, but have a dialogue with it and show it why it's irrational.

    - "If we lose the game, it will have been a waste of time!"

    - "No, it will be a new opportunity to grow."

    - "What do you mean? We want to win, not lose!"

    - "A loss offers us something valuable that win never could, a way to become a better player."

    - "We don't want to be some silly loser with a 'way to become better'. We want to be a good player who wins games! Not loses games."

    - "A loss will enable a path to being that good player you desire us to be. We cannot be a good player without becoming one, and this is the way."

    - "What do you mean 'this is the way'?! Winning is the way! Not losing, you dumb fool. Do you mean we should want to lose instead of wanting to win?"

    - "No, I am not saying that. We should indeed do our best to win the game."

    - "Then what are you saying?!"

    - "I am saying that while winning is desirable, accepting the outcome of the game before we have started is vital. Whether that outcome is victory or defeat."

    - "How are we supposed to accept losing when winning was the desirable outcome?"

    - "If we win we rejoice. If we lose we start investigating what fault lies with our gameplay. Then we address that fault. And then once we have addressed that fault we will not lose for that reason again."

    - "So if we lose we get a valuable opportunity to secure more victories in the future, resulting in more victories overall?"

    - "Just so, whatever happens this game – we are either going to add a victory or we are going to do important work in ensuring more victories in the future."

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is an essay style text stemming from a slightly rewritten script from a relatively short (4 minutes) video I made this week. I've seen posts and questions from several people regarding ladder anxiety and feeling bad about either losing or just the prospect of possibly losing.

Originally I just had the idea to make a new "how to improve" youtube video which had tips which none of the existing "how to improve" videos on youtube offered. My "tips" were more a sort of insights and attitudes to how to not only react to but also take advantage of losses to our benefit as well as addressing the view we have of what the road to improvement in AoE2 is.

But when reading what people were writing about their experience of feeling bad about losses whether they wanted to or not I realised my insights might aid not only in improving effectively at the game but also to alleviate that anxiety and have an overall more enjoyable experience of the game.

I think these insights have certainly helped me in that regard, so this text is an effort set in a desire that these insights might help others as well.

    [STATISTICS] The Desertification of Arabia

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 09:16 PM PST

I've been going over 7 different versions of Arabia, gathering data about starting woodlines, specifically:The amount of woodlines (#w)The distance from the starting Town Center (d)The amount of trees per woodline (#t)

    The findings in chronological order:
(If watching through your phone, scroll left over the table to see more)

    Woodlines #w Trees #t Distance d
    AOC Original Arabia 2-4 126 11
    KOTD 2 Arabia 3-3.5 96 14
    HC 3 Arabia 3-4 90 15
    RBW 2 Arabia 2 115 8
    KOTD 3 Arabia 4 57 15
    RBW 3 Arabia 4 61 14
    Current Ranked Arabia 3 68 15

\Some versions of Arabia were much more consistent, other required much more data to be gathered due to chaotic consistency like HC 3 and AOC.*Distance is measured by in-game tiles, diagonal tile equals 1.4 normal tile.*Woodline is considered belonged to the TC only in 25 tiles radius or less.*

The forgone conclusion followed by the findings is the odd deforestation, or shall I say desertification of Arabia that is going on these days. We can roughly estimate the accessible trees for the starting TC by multiplying the number of average woodlines and the average amount of trees in each one of them, here are the results sorted quantitatively:

    Overall Amount of Accessible Trees
    AOC Original Arabia 378
    HC 3 Arabia 315
    KOTD 2 Arabia 312
    RBW 3 Arabia 244
    RBW 2 Arabia 230
    KOTD 3 Arabia 228
    Current Ranked Arabia 204

This is the least amount of trees since not just DE launching, but the history of AOE 2.What can explain this drastical decline, can it get even lower? Is this part of an attempt of the developers to fight the walling-meta? Have they gone too far?

Arabia has changed, and that's just the trees we're talking about, not including the distance of the starting berries and gold mines or elevations from the TC.

Perhaps there should be two maps, Desert and Arabia. The first would be the current version, the latter would be some sort of Voobly/Tournament version of Arabia. The gap is big enough justify two different maps.

Thank you for reading, I'd like to hear more from you guys about your experience with the Current Arabia.

Is there a multiplayer Survival/Horde game mode?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 03:47 AM PST

I'm looking for something like this - Survival Mode

Basically, you and your allies have to build a base and defend it against waves of enemies of increasing difficulty and size. Even better if there are powerful bosses that spawn every X waves.

I've tried the Barbarossa brawl but it doesn't let you customise any settings and it's not even available in multiplayer.

    AOE2 HD version in 2021?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 07:19 AM PST

Some friends and I have been wanting to get some online multiplayer AOE going for some time, but Definitive Edition is too bloated for most of our machines (no gaming PCs). The HD version seems more manageable for system requirements.

Is the AOE2 HD version still active for multiplayer? Is this still a good option?

We also have the original install discs but not enough for everyone.

    Thanks.

Adding Tournament Maps to Ranked Pool

So whenever I'm watching tournaments like Red Bull WoLoLo 3 or Hidden Cup, I always see how creative some of the maps are. Is there a reason why the deva havent added a couple of these maps to the voting pool on the forums?

I have AOE2 DE on Steam and generally have more fun if I know the people I'm playing with. I will play against AI, 1v1, or team games, but would consider myself to be a mediocre player at best. So would be nice to meet other low to mid level players.

If interested shoot me a DM.
