    Scouts bugging?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 06:27 AM PST

Playing de after a month or so.

I wanted to know if there was any change in the last month or so which causes the scouts to bug out?

I notice a couple of times they just stand around without attacking. Also they seem to bump about a lot when chasing down a villager.

    Is anyone else facing this?

Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition: Moderate Strategy

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 05:18 AM PST

Hi everyone, I just started playing AOE2 Definitive Edition a week ago and I'm pretty hooked! Played a couple 1V1 on Standard difficulty (2nd easiest) and an crush the AI in about an hour and a half or so. I decided to step up vs moderate and am just not able to make any headway in taking them down.

I battled against them for about 6!! hours, and while I can get into their camp and destroy a few buildings, I just can't completely eliminate them. Their castles (I think) shoot a bunch of arrows at most of my guys and pick them off pretty quick.

How can I better breach their defenses? I mostly spammed cavalry, pikemen & some knights ( I play a the francs). End of game stats showed I had way more villagers than them, and a larger army. They had a lot more gold though because they captured 4 relics vs my 1.

Any tips would be appreciated! I think I can mostly hold my own in defending my camp against them but I just can't get over the final push to win.

    Thanks everyone!

Mod idea: that cube mod, but you can turn it on and off in game

Either that, or a button that would take away all the buildings and resources and just show which grid spaces are occupied by solid objects.

Kinda new player here; I wrote a story of my ranked game!

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 11:07 AM PST

Greetings, I am a fairly new player (around 30 h game time) playing a little under 900 elo in ranked. Therefore behind the scenes there was definitely idle time, dumb mistakes and such. But this game was very even with back and forths with very dynamic gameplay, which makes for the best AoE games according to me. For some reason I am feeling inspired to dramatize and write it like a story so here we go.

    Prologue

I queue upp for a ranked game, the nervous nerves of the beginner is on. I play the Celts and I match up against the Ethiopians, our arena; Arabia. Instantly I knew from watching T90 that I archers might be a problem. I enter the game with the plan to execute the fast castle build order from the Art of War.

The Dark Age - The Era of Mistakes

As the match begun I went at the build order as planned. I found the sheep, I killed the sheep, I ate the sheep. After I hectically had found all the animals that my people were promised I sent the scout to find the enemy; after all I smelled archers in the air and I wanted to be prepared. But in sending my scout in to the fog of war it appeared I had actually sent him into the very center of the enemy base. I quickly told him to fuck off away, the Town Center fired upon him, but alas he survived with a fifth of his health. But for a short while I had neclected my home. TRAGEDY, for shortly before discovering the Town Center I had sent a hunter to a boar. In my epic rescue of the scout I had forgotten him and thus he had died.

Scarred but determined I continued my build order and sent back the scout to the enemy to gain intel on their strategy. Sadly the scout ran into a pack of vicious enemy miners and died heroically. Not liking where this was going and fearing the fog of war I began to wall my base and built a barrack for militia to once again try to scout my enemies plans. It was during this where I received information that my enemy has gone to the feudal age, some minute before I would be. Now scarred and scared, but determined; I sent to of my militia into fog of war to find out what my enemy was doing.

The Feudal Age - The Era of Blood

Shortly after arriving in the feudal age I made contact with the enemy, my worst fear realized; it was archers. It was on a hill of the middle of the map and while my Celtic militia were fast, they stood no chance to these archers. Instantly I begun work on my own archery range, hoping to counter the archers with skirmishers. My builders also begun work on a market and a blacksmith, and soon I was on my way to the castle age. At this time I had foolishly only walled the eastern part of my base and from the fog of war I saw a rider of the Apocalypse come, and with him an army of ten archers. They arrived in the east, but could still shoot my eastern woodline. One dead, two dead.

My skirmisher numbers were still to low to take a fight so i bid my time. Next, they went after my gold miners to the west. Warned by the appearance of their scout, the managed to escape to the town center. The enemies archer number steadily increasing, I bid my time. This time they came for my woodline in the north, the bulk of my economy. TRAGEDY, for it was a slaughter. The death tool increased, but I bid my time. Finally my skirmishers were elite and my projectiles were fletched; I went to defend my village; my empire. An epic fight took place, with their horsemen taking the charge. In the end I was victorious, but at what cost; my economy was decimated, quite literally.

The Castle Age - The Era of Redemption

Eager to press my advantage I reorganized my economy, reassembled my army and pressed forward. There, on the hill of the first fight of the end of the first age, the burial ground of my militia; my enemy made his stand. Still against the same horseman of the first age and replenished archers, the battle was fought uphill. Once again we proved victorious, for the hill was won! This time I got to go on the offensive and made my way into the enemies base. I ran past they town center and raided the woodline and goldmine of my enemy. Their economy was indeed disrupted, but in the meantime my opponent had gone to the Castle Age and more importantly; new technologies were being researched. My brave skirmishers didn't stand a chance, for from the ranges garrisoned soldiers sprang into action, now armed with crossbows. They killed every single skirmisher. Now these crossbowmen were going for a counter push and my skirmisher army was gone.

But on top of the legendary hill my secret weapon lay waiting. And when my enemy finally noticed it they were already dead. For whilst I was raiding a siege workshop had been constructed, and from it an mangonel was created; an excellent counter to crossbows. With their army gone I took aim at one of the enemies new, exposed town centers. And I remembered the wise words from the ancient master: "Celts eat TC". A fierce battle was fought. From my hill I alternated between bombing the TC, the repairing villagers and the crossbow reinforcements. With my own skirmisher and mangonel reinforcements and reparing villagers. In the end the Town Center fell, but the fight continued. A brief pause in the enemies reinforcements ensued, so I pushed and destroyed their first line of archery ranges.

Then their reinforcements came. Now they also had mangonels in their ranks, more than me even. There were losses from both sides, but their numbers made the Ethiopians victorious in the end. This would have been disastrous if not for the fact that I had the hill fortified with a grand castle. Their push was deflected and so began a stalemate. Following my example they too build castle att the bottom of the hill and for the first time a knight was seen in their ranks. To answer this halbardiers were recruited into our own ranks. I knew there were just one thing that could brake this stalemate. Resources was sold and bought and at the market and I was on towards the Imperial Age.

The Imperial Age - The final Era

There was peace for now. The economies were booming, but the military numbers were slowly rising and secondary castles were constructed. After some time I reached the Imperial Age. Once there I gained access to a powerful new weapon; the trebuchet. A weapon to surpass stone walls. But the second the first trebuchet was operational, the enemy attacked. Armed with rams leading the charge this would prove most dangerous. Ill positioned in front of the castles my melee units ran forward into crossbow-fire which blocked the very sun. Knights pushed forward untill they were on top of my mangonels, one by one the fell untill there were only one left.

Alas in the end the battle was decided before it even started; it was over for I had the high ground. My castles shot powerful volleys, my mangonels slung stones like none had seen before. When the last of the enemy rams fell my castles were once again invincible. And from their mighty protection my trebuchets could safely destroy my opponents castles. Halfway to the Imperial Age but with their castles soon gone, my opponent conceded. The Celts stood victorious!

    Ending Notes

Well there it is, I don't know why I wrote this; or rather why I was inspired/motivated enough to write this. But it was fun at least, I guess I felt this match needed to be honored in some way :). Funnily enough, when watching the replay of it it seems my opponent was always ~20 villagers ahead of me at all times. Guess I have some improvement to do to my economy game ;).

    How to fight incan cancer?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 07:08 AM PST

Ive tried time and time again, but I cant figure out how to fight it, they go up at like vil 18 and I cant do anything against it. Unless I invest extremely heavy early walls I cant get them up in time. Hes got 10 vils in my base and just places down towers right on me, I cant vil fight as by the time im feudal he already has a blacksmith placed down. I only beat this BO once but it was inca war so that doesnt count.

I'd like a nerf to their villager wars (make the blacksmith upgrades not affect vil fights) since thats where most of the power comes from, its like having 10 maa-in-training that can build towers in your base right when you hit feudal, before you can even place down ranges or stables you have to fight that off.

How do you fight this? Seriously.

    wheelbarrow or vills ?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 01:02 AM PST

what is better ? to create 3 vills or to research the wheelbarrow in feudal age , i think 3 vills time = the wheelbarrow , and 3 vills cost 150 food , the wheelbarrow 175 food + 50 wood .

sorry about the english . ;)
