Why the Indians should get Camel Cannoneers, not Elephant Archers

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 04:04 PM PST

So hear me out guys. I know there's been a lot of talk about the historical innacuracy of the Indians civ, but I don't think its actually that bad.

The Indians are clearly based on the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughals. We know this to be true, because these empires used camels, and fittingly, the Indians have Imperial Camels. The Mughal Empire was known as one of the first great gunpowder empires. So what do the Indians have? Shatagni, a Hand Cannoneer technology. The other unique technology "Sultans" refers to the Delhi Sultanate.

So I suggest that the devs should lean into this idea. Make the Indians solely represent these empires by replacing their Elephant Archer UU with the Zamburak, which were essentially camel-mounted cannoneers used by the Timurids, Mughals and Safavids (Persians). This could be a great unique unit for Indians, with a bonus against infantry and elephants, as historically they were used against the war elephants of other Indian empires.

Subsequently, by creating a clear focus for what people the "Indians" civ represents, it makes it easier to add other more specific peoples from India to the game, like the Tamils or the Bengals. And the Tamils could get the Elephant Archer.

And this is all in the name of keeping civs distinct as more and more are added over the years.

Viper: “Lets make the game 100% playable. Lets get rid of problems, crashes, make lobby system better”

Viper view of current state of the game, and what he would like to be changed in the future. Agree 100%! Maybe people like him, that are really 100% dedicated to this game, could be heard a bit more from Devs side as well.

Difference between campaign difficulty levels in original Age of Kings?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 05:40 AM PST

The original Age if Kings has five difficulty levels instead of the three in HD and DE. What are the differences between those? I know the differences between the five skirmish AI levels (e.g. the easiest AI never attacks first and never builds Wonders), but those shouldn't apply to the campaign AI anyway, because it only (or mostly) builds structures such as Castles and Wonders when scripted to do so anyway, or when rebuilding them.

I'm aware of the standard/hard difficulty benefits/penalties for the player/AI as well, as they are listed on the wiki, but what do the easiest and hardest campaign difficulty setting do on top of that?

    Changing Pallete color in AGE?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 07:40 AM PST

how to change the color palette from AoE2 to AoE? I'm trying to convert Photon Man but replacing a slp with Photon Man's, it causes a palette bug, getting weird, so I was wondering if it's possible to switch palettes to AoE using AGE (Advanced Genie Editor)?

    An Appeal to Unrealism

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 11:19 AM PST

It's not uncommon to see threads on this subreddit about historical realism. There's been an insightful conversation going on here about how the Indian civ is a little off-kilter regarding their (perhaps unwarranted) access to camels and their (definitely unwarranted) lack of access to Battle Elephants.

This theme crops up everywhere: why do the meso civs get blacksmiths at all? Why do the nomadic civs get castles? Why do the Sicilians get to be represented in the game when they're so close to Italians, while the term "Indian" refers to a vast subcontinent with many distinct groups, but they all get lumped into one civ?

My intent in posting this is not to ignore these inconsistencies/potential inconsistencies, minimize their importance, or comment on the accuracy/legitimacy of these concerns.

Instead, I'd like to point out the good that is coming out of these inconsistencies:

    This sub talks about history.

    A lot.

It's really cool when the devs really nail representing a real-world group. It just feels good.

But I wonder, would we be talking about history as much if every civ were spot-on perfect?

It's not very often that you see appreciation posts saying "Oh gosh I just LOVE the Huns in this game!" followed up by a 3-page analysis of why they're true to history. [I picked them as a random example; I don't know enough to comment on their historicity.]

A game based on history should strive to be historically accurate as much as possible, but I'd just like to submit for your consideration the idea that we see more posts about history when the game gets something wrong than when it gets something right. We're learning a lot more from AoE's mistakes than from its successes. Sure, it's frustrating to see a part of the world you identify with get rough treatment at the hands of a game, but I've learned a lot more about the various empires on the Indian subcontinent from people explaining why the Indian civ is inaccurate than I would have from 7 perfectly-executed Indian-based civs. There are lots of people here who are enthusiastic about the many different nations and groups that have existed throughout history and will post asking for more civs from x/y/z region because there's untapped potential there. Whether or not it results in new/more accurate civs, we still benefit from their research and knowledge about world history.

In the meantime, the game is fun despite its historical mishaps. Maybe the Indians really shouldn't have Camels and really should have Elephants, but in the meantime the game isn't being ruined by OP Indian Elephants, and we can be thankful for that.

So keep having those conversations. Keep those critical appraisals coming, and be thoughtful in how you read/respond to others on those threads. This game isn't perfect, but it is fun, and if it's prompting historical research to figure out for ourselves what's wrong and what's right, that's really all we can ask for from a game.

And most importantly, you should check your TC. It's probably idle.

Performance issues since the last patch

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 03:25 PM PST

    Hi,

I wonder if any of you experience the same as me since the last patch. My game has been running rather smoothly but since the last patch many problems have risen:

    1. Lagging when someone ages up. No clue why this is happening, had no problems before.
    2. The speed is often uneven. You can see it here: https://youtu.be/9ppNpYV2k88?t=10. The FPS is constant, yet the game speed is still faster-slower sometimes. Very very annoying.
    3. The game sometimes freezing for seconds.
    4. My friend's game literally crashes every time he enters Castle Age when we play multiplayer. Basically we couldn't play 2 games without restoring.

Are there any fixes for any of these? I love this game, and have been playing a lot lately. It feels very bad that it slowly gets unplayable because of these small performance bugs. Not that I have a bad PC (at least in my opinion):

    CPU: i5-8500
    RAM: 16 GB DDR4
    GPU: GTX 1060 6GB
