    A civ a month #2: Britons

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 06:23 AM PST

Welcome back to the XIV century! I'm here again, the end of february brings us to the shores of Albion. A full month playing as the britons. I'm still getting over it: the month is gone and here I am, telling what's known by all, but with my own words. I play arabia, I play 1v1 and I'm a 12xx player.

    What about britons?

Britons are an archer civ. Their stable sucks. Their infantry line is there, but who uses them anymore. They don't have big mangos. They don't have cannons. They have archers. They shoot arrows. That's it. You already knew this, right? But let me rewrite it for you. Menerell, what's the defining thing of the britons? Well, this week I have a bonus and a malus for you:

    • They shoot from farther, starting in Castle Age.
    • They don't get thumb ring.

Why am I giving so much importance to the thumb ring, even above other bonuses like the faster shepherds or the cheaper TC? Because with britons, you want to play archers. And briton archers both are awesome and eat farts. Especially in feudal age. They don't get a chance against cheaper mayan archers or the crazy powerful ethiopian archers. Jeez, they even lose against koreans.

So, read this carefully. Probably you've heard that britons are OP. Briton archers have the worst aim and the worst firing rate among all the archer civs, and they'll die 1v1 until their bonus kicks in. I repeated this sentence every morning instead of saying my daily prayer, until I learned my lesson. Don't try to go full feudal archer against other archer civ. Or against a guy that has 10 skirms. It's suicide.

They partially make this problem up by having a faster producing range, that is, if your economy can pay for it. But I found it more useful when trying to recover from a disaster. you can replace your dead guys faster, and hit again. Or build up a more powerful Castle Age army. But please, don't go head on against vietnamese skirms in feudal age. You've been warned.

Breaking the will to fight among the enemies

When you reach castle age and you get Yeomen, the tide turns in your favor... a lot. Briton archers can outshoot not only other archers but also mangonels, making them very good at hit and run. Hit the mangonel, run the the fresh shadow of your castle. Repeat. Snowball. The whole civ seems to have been designed with the Battle of Agincourt in mind.

Longbowmen: close but still untouchable. There's nothing more infuriating than fighting 40 longbowmen. There's even a joke about it. 40 longbowmen sit at the counter of a bar. What's the joke? There ain't no counter for 40 longbowmen. Sure, they would miss an elephant at point blank, and it takes some time for them to reload, but just the first volley should be enough to make the enemy rethink his attack.

I've won games where, if the player had continued playing, he would have won the game. Or maybe not, because to fight, you need gold. And the gold was mine because...

If you occupy the hills and control the resources, you'll fight with advantage

Briton TCs are cheap. Dirty cheap, considering the importance of wood in early Castle Age, when playing as an archer civ. You can easily have 5 TCs by the end of Castle Age, and If you manage to control the middle ground with a castle, the game is quite decided.

    Franks, the ultimate enemy

England won that battle near a small village in Northern France in 1415, but eventually lost the 100 Years War against France. I wonder if last week Hera or Vyper said Franks are OP, but about 25% of my matches have been against Franks. And I've lost... well, all of them. I honestly don't know how to counter them effectively. I've tried going full pikes, but then I hit scorpions. I tried monks but they were killed by light cav. It seems that the horrible stable and the mediocre siege shop doesn't help against full cav civs.

I've tried to hit early, using the sheeps bonus, but Franks have an similar eco bonus plus more efficient farms. I've tried to mass archers fast and hit in castle age, but frank stables work faster too. I've tried occupiying the middle and controling resources but franks have cheaper castles. And let's forget that time that tried to open scout against them. What a joke.

To the day, this remains a mistery. Franks are definitely OP, but against britons are just... a nightmare.

    Last thoughts

I enjoyed playing britons. I enjoy a lot playing this game, so it was no surprise, but I learned a lot of things too. Expand your eco. Be patient. Occupy the center. Wait for your power spike. Snipe vils, one at a time. Hit and retreat. Expect to be hated. Expect salty enemies. Expect to be insulted.

This month I also played TG a lot, and even though Arabia is my favorite map, I've played a couple of Black forest games. Brits are famous (or in-famous) for being great at defending choke points. I'll just say something for the occasional forest brits... beware the mongol onagers!

March is here and I'll be choosing a cav civ. Lithuanians? See you in April... Eime medžiatum!

Why do Chinese open with scouts?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 11:58 PM PST

Chinese are considered an archer civ. But as far as I can remember the meta is to open scouts with them and whenever I get Chinese, that is automatically what I do. I was just rewatching HC3 final and in game 1 Saladin is Chinese. T90 and Dave keep repeating that "he's Chinese so he'll open scouts." I'm curious why this is the meta. Why is that most archer civs do things like M@A into 1 or 2 range archery range, but Chinese open stables?

Garrisoned skirmishers no longer add any extra arrows?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 11:24 PM PST

I remember at some point skirmishers used to add some extra arrows, not many but you could get at least 1 or 2 extra. Now even if I garrison 25 imperial skirmishers into teuton town center, it adds 0 arrows. Same for watch towers and castles.

Does anyone know when or why this was changed?

Beating the Extreme AI isn't so crazy. You can do it with only Swordsmen.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 02:47 PM PST

    Hey folks!

With the current AI challenge, I'm seeing people finally succeed in beating the Extreme AI! I wanted to share that it's easier than I thought it would be if you keep it simple: use only the Militia-line.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5-VbVsC6qg

I'm starting to produce content for AoE2, largely aimed at beginners-intermediates. We get awesome stat-based videos from Spirit of the Law, bugs explored by T-West, and great games from the pros like TheViper and Hera. But I don't see too many videos aimed at people that haven't been playing for ages.

Let me know if you find this helpful!

    Converting units/buildings

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 03:00 AM PST

I've got some questions about converting units/buildings:

What charactaristics are actually converted, which not?

    1) If you convert an archer and then upgrade to x-bow, that archer will be upgrade too, won't it?

    2) If you convert an archer but already have the x-bow upgrade, will it be an archer or a x-bow? And if it is an archer, will it upgrade to arb when the tech is researched?

    3) I heard that if you convert a hun stable, you'll get the 20% bonus. What happens if you convert british archers? Do you still have the +3 range? (or will he forget that once he is converted 11) So you could have elite longbowmen with thumbring?

Have you done any experiences on the stuff above? Thanks in advance for helping me understanding the conversion system. :)

Unique (dumb) strategies that actually work

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 04:05 PM PST

I have always loved playing valley with Vikings and building their cheaper docks and a few fishing ships. But the real goal was having 15 or 20 longboats to totally secure the map. A few months back in one of the tournaments maybe 2v2 world cup a guy made caravels to own the middle. T90 didn't know it was even possible to move boats on the sand. So I'd love to hear unique ideas. Even if the strategy just looks good on paper. I find I enjoy working out the details and making plans far more than just spamming trash. Even on a 20 year old game I'm quite sure there's still great new ideas.

    Genghis Khan 3 achievement

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 02:26 AM PST

Did you start your town at blue's base, or you transported your units across the river and camped outside yellow city?

I tried to set up a base at yellow's island, obtained the six bombard cannons, but I lost my army to yellow's army.

What are your top 5 civs and why?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 09:08 AM PST

I'm curious to know what you go for and why. There are so many civs and I'm sure there are some hidden gems out there.

    Mine in no particular order:

    Khmer - Farm bonus

    Huns - No houses

    Vikings - Ship bonus

    Portuguese - Cannon things
