Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 11 Week 15: Aztecs vs Teutons

    Posted: 20 Apr 2021 10:14 PM PDT

    Deus vult vs Quetzalcoatl!

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Celts vs Saracens, and next up is the Aztecs vs Teutons!

    Aztecs: Infantry and Monk civilization

    • Villagers carry +3
    • Military units created +11% faster
    • Monks gain +5 hp per Monastery tech researched
    • Start with +50 gold
    • TEAM BONUS: Relics generate +33% gold
    • Unique Unit: Jaguar Warrior (Powerful anti-infantry infantry)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Atlatl (Skirmishers +1 attack, +1 range)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Garland Wars (Infantry +4 attack)

    Teutons: Infantryand Defensive civilization

    • Monks have 2x healing range
    • Towers garrison 2x units; Town Centers garrison +10 units
    • Murder Holes; Herbal Medicine free
    • Farms cost -40%
    • Barracks and Stable units +1/+0 armor in Castle Age, +2/+0 armor in Imperial Age
    • TEAM BONUS: Units better resist conversion
    • Unique Unit: Teutonic Knight (Extremely slow, powerful, and heavily-armored infantry)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Ironclad (Siege weapons +4/+0 armor)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Crenellations (Castles +3 range; garrisoned infantry fire arrows)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Alrighty, so for 1v1 Arabia, Aztecs have traditionally been king, whereas Teutons are generally considered a bit too slow. Indeed, the Aztecs should have the advantage early on due to their numerous early-game bonuses, but Teutons themselves have plenty of ways to stay alive. If the Teuton player can survive the initial onslaught, can they outmuscle the Aztec army with their heavily armored infantry and cavalry?
    • For 1v1 Arena, both of these civs are quite popular. A certain snake recently uploaded a video of his top 5 Arena civs, placing both civs in his top 7. On this map, Aztecs can actually use their early game advantages just as well - only this time to take map control and relics. Teutons, however, generally seek to slowly grind down any civilization that stands in their path. Can Aztecs get far enough ahead in midgame to close it out, or will they run into the inevitable brick wall of Teutons?

Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the . Hope to see you there! :)

Would be fun to have user flairs of the different civ symbols for the subreddit.

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 04:44 AM PDT

I wouldn't know where to start with it, I'm far from tech proficient. But if someone on the subreddit knew what they were doing re: user flairs I think it would be a fun little gimmick to introduce.

Can we start pressuring the devs to fix team game elo?

    Posted: 20 Apr 2021 02:28 PM PDT

    https://ratings.aoe2.se/

So for those that are unfamiliar, at the end of a team game the amount of elo you will win/lose is calculated from the highest elo in the opposing team instead of the average. This leads to elo inflation, and is why the average teams elo is so much higher than the average 1v1 elo. This has a couple of effects in practice:

    • If you have a poor win rate, you will still go up in elo after lots of games
    • New accounts start at 1000 TG elo. This mean smurfs will have to win hundreds of games before getting to their rightful elo, ruining the fun for lower ranked players
    • By the time you get to 2K+ you end up combination of very good players with <50 games played, and very bad players with 100s of games played and a 40% (or worse) win rate. Both of these players are rated as equally skilled in matchmaking and generally leads to horribly imbalanced games.
    • This effect is exacerbated over time, to the point that you can pretty much tell right off the bat if you will win or lose by looking at your teammates win rates
    • Playing 1v1s after playing team games will start you at your team game elo. So if you are 2k TG elo (probably around 1.1k player) and try to play your first ranked 1v1, you will play your first game against someone who is around 1k 1v1. If you win it will jump you right up to 2k 1v1 elo and you'll have to lose about 20 games to get to your actual level

This has been known about for a long time. So what is the excuse for not fixing it? It sucks the fun right out of team games. How has this game been out for 18 months without this ever being addressed?

Age of Empires II interactive wallpapers

    Hi everyone!

I am happy to share the three Age of Empires II interactive wallpapers I have created using Wallpaper Engine on Steam. Credit for the art of course goes to Atomhawk, the art designer for AoE II: DE (https://atomhawk.com/age-of-empires).

I have recorded my desktop to show you the results below! Please note that the recorder did not record my cursor. The interactive element happens when the cursor moves over each picture.

Below you the videos you will find the link to the Steam page. You will require Wallpaper Engine to use these wallpapers.

I really hope you enjoy these!

    https://youtu.be/AO8AjrjZngI (Steam link: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2439903337)

    https://youtu.be/a4-cuhuIvHs (Steam link: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2441122267)

I do note that these are in 5120x1440p resolution and currently do not know how well these scale (they should scale fine to 1440p but issues may arise for 1080p scaling). If these do not scale well to other resolutions, please do let me know. I am happy to recreate these for different resolutions.

Edit: Video quality was bad, used Youtube links instead.

Either the map pools must be boring or match avoiding must be fixed

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 06:39 AM PDT

Sitting in the RM que now, wait for five minutes, any time its an "interesting" map, for example with the current rotation Megarandom, Islands or Land Nomad/Nomad, the match just fails because someone skips it.

I dont want to play Arabia / Arena every game. If I wanted, there is the lobby browser. This should be addressed, it is infurating to wait for a game with such a large chance to just fail to get it going.

I would rather take boring maps if I must, but this should be fixed

I would call on the community to stop this behaviour but there are too many cowards who refuse to play on different maps, even in known to be broken Team Ranked ELO.

Conscription icon implies soldiers are being paid

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 08:46 AM PDT

I know it's been pointed out with ballistics icon (it shows a BBC, not effected by balistics, shooting a castle, stationary object) but did anyone notice the conscription icon makes it seem like you're researching "paying your soldiers" rather than what it really is? IDK made me smile a little, any others that seem weird I'm missing?

    Gameplans with PlanetofLies, Portuguese

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 03:25 AM PDT

This will be the first in (hopefully) a long series of gameplans. To me the main benefit of a gameplan is knowing what your current and next prority is going to be.

Disclaimer: I am not saying this is the only way to play the civ, nor that it's going to work in every situation

Portuguese plan 1: We start with a pre-mill drush, Portuguese don't need to collect 10 gold and thus have slightly easier build.

In Feudal we go for double range archers.

In Castle we go for a 3 tc boom with double range crossbow with either monks or scorpions for extra safety, towards the middle of castle we start taking stone

In imp we upgrade our crossbow to arbs, we switch to elite skirm and make quad stable cavalier. Get up to 6 ranges, 2 seige workshops for rams. We can skip some ranges and go for light cav if the opponent does not go for pikeman

Pro's: Early aggression Good eco Hard counter to Skirms Easy switch from cav + skirm to arb + light cav

Con's: Hard early build Slow feudal time Defensive castle age No upgrade to Paladin Late castles

Has anyone tested any new Burgundian builds with the public beta?

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 07:50 AM PDT

The upcoming balance changes for the Burgundians made quite a big change to their early game and eco in general. I've tested a them out a bit, but my build orders tend to have a bit of slack in them. I was wondering if anyones had a decent go of seeing what they are capable of with the upcoming changes?

    Had a good experience today

    Posted: 20 Apr 2021 12:47 PM PDT

I played someone today and after the game he stayed and gave me pointers and told me how I could have won. The next game we queue each other again and I follow his advice exactly and win the game. Then he had the nerve to be really cool about it and congratulate me while talking some more strategy.

Please stop falling for the unique unit trap

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 08:14 AM PDT

More and more do I see this, especially on arena.

Civs with a powerfull unique unit that will exclusively make them, unique units have the downside of being hard to mass due to being made from only castles (with the exception of huscal and tarkan)

But this shouldn't be the only thing you go for, yes a deathball of Mangudai is strong but 20 mangudai won't outlast anyone going for Archers, skirms or knights if they are producing from +10 production buildings.

I see games thrown away because of lack of production buildings and focusing on only UU.

    Count stuck villagers as idle

    Posted: 20 Apr 2021 11:10 AM PDT

    Hi,

Question to the devs; is it possible to count stuck villagers as idle? Surely there has to be an easy way to detect this. Upvote if you're interested in such a feature. Also: thanks a lot for the great improvements over the last couple of months.

    Toxic players in unranked.

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 12:05 AM PDT

I'm an alright player, average straight down the line.

There have been a few games recently, playing in unranked games, where my own team mate who's either around the same skill level as me or a bit below, will constantly insult me and other team mates of ours. This usually happens when they're being attacked and resign.

This still happens if I, we, help him out during those situations. There's a real lack of communication with some people.

Is this normal in your experience? It's just weird when it comes from your own team mate.

What has been your most annoying "I refuse to lose" tactic so far?

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 08:53 AM PDT

We have probably all been there: despite having clearly lost with all your buildings razed and armies scattered, you simply refuse to concede defeat and keep building new TCs with your last villager to drag things out for as long as possible.

Of course, building TCs is just one way to escape defeat...

What has thus far been your most cunning, underhanded tactic to continue your lost game and frustrate the hell out of your opponent?

DM or mention in comment the civ you want ( +how you want) and for what version of the game. It may take a while if I get many requests. I won't charge nobody

What level AI should I be able to beat consistently before jumping into ranked 1v1

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 07:42 AM PDT

Hello everyone. New to the sub and playing aoe2. Been watching it for the last couple years and decided to mix up my gaming from the normal fps shooters I play. Looking for advice when to jump into 1v1 ranked. Or is it just something I should just do and learn as I go. I guess I would rather not go 0-15 or something in the start haha.
