    Capoch's Build Orders Guide

    Hey everyone!

The new build orders guide is available for Twitch subscribers! It contains more than 50 pages on how to improve your skills on AoE2!

All you need to do to get the guide is subscribe to www.twitch.tv/capoch. Remember, if you have Amazon Prime or Prime Gaming, you can subscribe for free or if not, it costs 4.99USD.

After subbing, you must join my discord channel (https://discord.gg/65NwUgz), go to discord connections in settings and sync your Twitch with your discord. You will then find a private channel in my discord called "build-order-guide" where you can download the guide. It comes in two languages (english and spanish) and the idea is to keep it fresh by adding new content every month (2 builds at least) so stay tunned!

Here are some sample pages of the guide. The cover page has a "birthday" vibe because my birthday is in April. I hope you guys like it and sorry about this self-promotion post!

    Kind regards,

    Capoch.

Thanks to everyone who watched the Challenge Showmatch yesterday!

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 02:53 PM PDT

Hello, just wanted to say thank you to everyone who watched the showmatch yesterday. Also, thank you T90 & slam for the fantastic commentary, as well as TheViper & Hera for providing very entertaining gameplay as always. If you haven't seen it, feel free to checkout the VOD here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/987297012

If folks have feedback or suggestions for future showmatchs, feel free to provide that as well. Thanks!

Here is the list of challenges that were planned for each match:

C1 - Bible Camp: Place 100 vils of the same gender into a walled enclosure with only an outpost at the center. Win not required.

C2 - Doubt Castle: Build a castle using only converted villagers. Win required

C3 - Road Trip: The same villager must travel to all four corners of the map and build an outpost there (or as close to corner as possible). The villager can only travel via ram, which must pickup the vil from the TC. The vil cannot travel more than five tiles away from the ram. After building the first outpost, the villager must survive. However, replacement rams are allowed and outposts do not have to survive. Win not required.

C4 - Blood Sacrifice: Every eco upgrade requires you to delete five villagers. You must build a wonder and delete 50 villagers at the base of the wonder. Win not required.

C5 - Golden Horde: You can only make gold units and villagers. Win required.

C6 - National Park: You must create an enclosure containing your deer plus one enemy deer. The enclosure must have forest on one side and walls on the other three. If enemy deer is gone or inaccessible, you may substitute three wolves. Win not required.

C7 - Great House Wall: Create a continuous chain of buildings connecting two opposite sides of the map. No walls or trees allowed. Win not required.

C8 - Unholy Alliance: Your opponent must have all five relics when he resigns. Win required.

C9 - Traitor Zoo: Convert at least two specimens of five different enemy units (E.g. Archer/Crossbow/Arb would be three different types). Place converted units into a zoo containing walls on four sides. Win not required.

C10 - Capitalism at all Costs: Generate 250 gold in trade with your opponent. Win not required.

    HD vs DE civ updates

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 06:29 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I have a small question for you.

I have been playing AOE2 DE for a few weeks now and planning some online games with friends on the steam HD version (not everyone could run the DE).

I was wondering if the DE civs updates are also applied to the HD. Also, there is plenty of information about the DE online with the tech trees, civs bonuses, but couldn't find the same for the HD, is there any? That would be very useful if the civs are balanced differently between the two versions.

    Thanks!

Strategy Thesis of the Week: Incas are better when you don't vil-rush (and they're one of the best designed civs in the game and Kamayuks are insane)

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 08:51 AM PDT

I am going to continue with my thesis of the week "series". This time I want to speak about one of my favorite Civ which was one of the most hated as well. The Inca Vil rush is going to be nerfed out of the game - finally we all can go back to enjoy this amazing Civ being played as it was supposed to be! (Someone even opened a thread about how to play them now - I am in shock!)

    • Disclaimer: That stuff is rather supposed to be thought provoking than 100% true and I'll go for some clickbaitish headline now and then to get the discussion rolling. So, feel free to give your opinion and don't be too angry about me. ;) Also I want to add that my view will, in some cases, not translate into top-level-meta because the time-windows and their use is tighter up there, but with having a current ELO of 1700, my thoughts should be applicable for 98% of the player base.

I am always advocating for the Kamayuk and count Incas under the best designed Civs of the game. Having a 73% win rate with them I never used the vil rush. The beauty of them is their ability to counter everything and to have multiple game plans available, some of them being unique or almost unique and still good but not op - what Civ you can say that about?

In the other thread about the vil-rush-nerf, someone stated that the nerf would make them "another blah civ like Koreans" but Incas are like the least blah civ there is. What makes them special?

    • Extremely smooth Dark Age which can be turned into a smoother Feudal transition than what most Civs can do
    • One of just three civs with access to Eagle Warriors
    • One of the best unique units in the game
    • Cheaper Castles to get to them
    • Unique Infantry-counter which also buffs the Eagles indirectly
    • Vils that are harder to raid
    • It's way easier to avoid getting housed - it sounds banal but we all know that it is in fact a problem, even up to the highest levels. This also safes them 25 wood per each 10 population

All of that is bringing them into the highest win-rates through all ELO-levels except top level and that have been always the case, even before the vil-rush stuff started to get common. On lower levels they had the highest win rate at some point in the past because of their smooth Dark Age.

So, how do you play them? Let me just start with one key aspect which i feel to be broadly overseen:

Kamayuks are actually the best counter to Knights that is in the game. (Genoese Crossbows come close but are much harder to afford.) They trade similar or even better than Pikes, they don't need to be massed as much as Pikes to be effective and they actually do well against pretty much everything else while Pikes get killed by everything else and Camels get smashed by Archers and even more by Pikes. They are so good, that they actually counter Paladin really effectively (not just hardly cost efficiently or in superior numbers like Halbs do) and they're also one of the few real counters to Konniks. Kamayuk is cheap, produces quickly and is not hard countered by anything, you basically always have enough time to add the counter to the counter (Eagles or Slingers or Skirms or Siege). They're also very convenient to micro and are even able to use choke points. It's just an amazing unit.

With the Knight arguably being the best and most common unit in the game, that is a huge asset to have. Against almost any civ, you can play into Knights and when they add Pikes, you just add some Scorps, when they go into Camels you add Pikes of your own and you have the upper hand again. Against Kamayuks? Not that easy. (Btw, it's also harder to raid with Kamayuks protecting the base than with Pikemen running around, because their range makes them attacking quicker, you can't just dodge them all the time.)

With also having access to Eagles, they also have the best counter against archers (except for Huskarl) available, which makes them having the best possible counter for both main strategies of this game. If you manage to get an Eagle mass, you force your opponent into Longswords or Knight which you can counter with Slingers and Kamayuks faster and easier than what Mayans and Aztecs can do. So while your Eagles are the worst, they actually can give you more momentum.

Except for (and ahead of) a Kamayuk- or Eagle-centered gameplan, you also have the option to go for a standard play with M@A into Archers. That is typically one of the tightest early builds and any eco advantage helps you to get quicker into the Archers. With the additional llama, you can afford the M@A and the wood upgrade easier and you have to transition later to farms which makes it easier to drop the range. With consistently saving wood on houses, it's also easier to get towards the second range and the blacksmith or to add a few Skirms without damaging your farming eco. If it goes well, you can stick to the archer play as you get fully upgraded Arbelest.

When the opponent has to commit to Skirms or Siege, you have the super easy Eagle-transition available which is the backbone-option for Aztecs and Mayans too. When you fear a big Knight transition, you just send a few to stone and you get quite comfortably to your Castle, you can hold with Archers and the Castle and have the Kamayuks coming.

Oh, and by the way: Kamayuk - Siege Ram on Arena is absolutely insane against most civs.

Bottom line: The Incas are one of the best balanced Civs in the game, one of the most unique at the same time and one of the Civs that are most dependend on decision making. They must be seen as a Counter-Civ but can also - kinda differently to Byzantines - turn their counters into strong offensive power. They share this quality probably with only one civ which is the Malians. Beautiful civ design really.

Where did the taunts come from?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 06:37 PM PDT

I've always been curious about the background of the taunts. Some of them sound like sound bites. What were they? Were they recordings of the developers goofing off? Were they homages to previous games? And who were they? I've looked around and couldn't find anything. Are there any records of where the taunts came from?

    Insane griefing from a player.

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 01:38 PM PDT

I have never seen someone do this. In a Ranked TG Arena, the blue player started talking smack for no apparent reason; I said I'm going to mute them and proceeded to do so.
A couple of minutes later there are siege workshops in my base destroying my own base with Onager attack ground.

I play aoe2 because of the (usual) mature audience, players like this ruin the game. I really want to make sure this player gets punished for this (yeah, I'm salty). What else can I do other than reporting in-game?

4 Reasons the Bohemians could sit nicely in a new DLC

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 12:14 PM PDT

    1) They fit neatly into the game's time period - the Duchy and then the Kingdom of Bohemia existed from 870 to the end of the medieval period and beyond.

    2) If we take the adjective 'Teutonic' as meaning 'German speaking' it is debatable how effectively the Teutons can represent the largely Czech speaking Bohemians.

    3) Potential for a genuinely interesting UU in the Hussite War Wagon - Perhaps an anti-cav mobile tower with a 'pack/unpack' action? Definitely potential to do something innovative with it.

    4) Plenty of scope for interesting campaigns - the Hussite Wars would be my personal pick. Note that the Bohemians already feature in two campaigns and that there is also a 'Bohemia' map in the pool.

    Poll about the Umbrella system

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 03:51 AM PDT

As you know many people start to talk that the new civs in next DLC will be Polish and Bohemians, and both of them actually are SLAVS. IMO i really hate breaking the damn umbrella system and add every single village that was under the umbrella in that time as a kingdom/civ/empire, so i just want to know what do you think?

What cosmetic changes would you make in AoE2?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 10:04 AM PDT

By cosmetic changes I mean anything that doesn't affect gameplay, only visuals or audio.

    My changes would be:

    1. Rename Vikings to Norse and Teutons to Germans (and remove horns from berserkers)
    2. Change byzantine voices to greek instead of latin
    3. Give all civs a unique castle model like sicilians and burgundians

    What would yours be?
