    A civ a month #3: Lithuanians

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 06:59 AM PDT

Did you think march pass by without me writing a new post? You fools! Go back to your castles!

Welcome again to the 14th siècle, a land of dangerous perils and unforgetable passions, a time where a simple chess game could end up in a war. This month we travel North to the Baltic pagan lands, to the Lithuanian duchy!

    Lithuanians 101

Lithuanians (lithus from now on) are a cavalry civ. They have 3 defining factors:

    1. Their heavy cavalry gets +1 attack with every relic you pick
    2. They start with +150 food.
    3. Their foot trash moves faster.

From there you can see we are talking about a civ very inclined towards the cavalry strategies, like scouts to knights, since you can have almost 2 scouts for free due to the original food bonus, and your cavalry gets better when you pick a relic. Mind that before picking the relics your cavalry is just vanilla freshmen, summer knights if you've read GoT, so it's nothing like the french or magyar cav. You need to fight for it, and trust me, it's gonna cost you money. Picking those relics fast strains more your eco than dating that posh girl while you work at the cafeteria of your school.

Puritans would say that you have also a good drush FC, even the famous insta drush. Well if you can pull that rabbit out of your hat well for you! You should be writing this guide and not me. Against a couple of civs it's better to drush, wall and go for a FC, but you need to remember that lithus aren't great at booming, so be careful. And don't get trushed.

    Fighting your peers

Against other cav civs like franks and magyars or even huns you have this advantage: you can reach feudal before your opp, and if you're lucky you can deny their stables long enough to make them lose advantage. Also, your spears move faster, so it's easier to micro them into hitting the targets (or avoiding them). I've been able to outpace with a 18 pop scout rush (17 vils + scout) mostly all the other cav civs sauf mongols. But unless you're clever this advantage goes away fast. Some of the other cav civs have an early advantage like more HP, free upgrades, faster training. The key here is hit fast and be thinking already of castle age, not overcommit, and micro like crazy.

    Fighting the invaders!

Archer civs are at risk if they send their archers mindlessly agaisnt you, our skirmishers, cunning warriors raised in the forests of Samogitia, can make Grybukai out of them. Scouts + skirmishers is a devastating feudal composition, if your eco is still there to pay for it.

Win your battles by making no mistakes

If you and your opp survive the first encounters, the way for castle and imperial will be long and full of terrors. The enemy knows you, they've read the wiki the same as you, and they won't let you pick your pretty relics. They'll fight them with teeth and nails. They doesn't have to prioritize them, but you do. Sending a couple of pikes to every relic will kill most probably kill your monk and delay your eco. Meanwhile they can ready their armies to fight against yours while you're still weak. That's why you need to be sage and pick your fight. Don't let the enemy destroy your forces before they are ready. Flee to fight another day. Come back when you're strong and show them how the Lithuanians fight.

Let me rephrase this. There isn't a worse feeling in all AoE2 (well maybe been inca trushed) than losing a big big cavalry fight. So pick your fight and don't be that guy.

    Personal thoughts

Overall the lithus were funny to play and I learned a lot about how to manage a cav army. It's very important to learn that no matter how strong for knights are, they'll still lose to pikemen, so army composition is a must. Skirmishers is a good choice, and kt + sk has been the way to go, except for some cases where weird compostions defeated me hard.

The whole thing about the relics, seen from the outside, seems very OP but I didn't feel like it gave me a lot of advantage over my opps. In some cases yes, it was a nice plus to have there when things were very tight, but it wasn't a deal breaker except in one or two games. And honestly, sometimes it delayed my economy more than helped my army. I think this civ was less inspiring than britons or byzantines, and I felt less inclined to play, or who knows, maybe it was just my mood (march was quite hard!).

Please comment and tell me your opinion about Lithuanians!

Next month I'll be playing vikings. I want to play a civ with a strong economy for a change. Let's see what happens. See you in May!

Trying to gather all of the resources on a ludicrous sized 1 player game of Amazon Tunnel

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 07:34 PM PDT

    Time is set to fast.

    Huns.

    Post Imperial Age.

    Resources set to standard.

    Win Condition is conquest.

    Pop cap is 500.

    Let's do this.

I am currently 38 hours into my game(according the timer. I am on fast, so it is actually half that time I have kept it running). I have collected the relic. I have lots of TCs. No lumber camps have been made. I am using TCs to drop off resources. I built a mill to recycle my farms, and mining camp(s) to gather the stone/gold at the center of the map. No tunneling with trebs has been done.

I have collected over 7 million wood. I am probably about halfway done with the map's worth of trees. As an added bonus, I am going to try and convert all of my wood into food, by making 499 farms and trying to waste all of my wood on them, by remaking them until I either have to close the game, or run out of wood. It might take some time. I sometimes build a new TC closer to the wood line to make the trip easier. I currently have 498 villagers chopping wood, and one monk which was used to get the Relic. I killed my starting scout. The map, BTW, was set to explored. I only have to chop down all the trees to get all the resources. I made many farms and 6-8 TCs to get the almost 500 vills I needed. I am letting it run in the background. I would stream if I had the equipment. if I finish the trees before I need to close down the game, I would like to know how to upload the game as a replay that won't break or something when using it on a new patch, so people can watch. I will update this thread periodically with new developments.

UPDATE: I have almost 8 million wood.

UPDATE: Counted my TCs. 41. Enough stone to make 21 more.

UPDATE: That last villager, for shits and giggles, is working a single farm. He has collected over 60,000 food so far. He has been at it for awhile.

UPDATE: I got gold from all the gold mines on the map. That + The relic I have, has netted me just over 50,000 gold so far!

UPDATE: ABOUT 9.4 MILLION WOOD SO FAR. 10 MILLION, HERE WE COME.

UPDATE: 62 TCs. Now I will make Lumber Camps after awhile to speed it up. I only have 56 stone left.

    UPDATE: 10 MILLION WOOD.

Talk me through your Burma strats for 1v1 and TG

What does your opening look like

    What are they good at?

    What do they struggle against?

    Arambai? More like ArambWHY amirite?
When do you build these, how many do you need for them to be effectful.

What does a post-Imp none arambai Burma look like?

Did I make the right call?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 04:17 AM PDT

I'm analysing a arena game I played recently.

It was a 3v3 game and I was playing turks, I went for a fast imp and was on the flank, their flank didn't see it coming and was just pushed out of his base.

I decided to go for their pocket who was mongols who managed to push me back with mass light cav, magudai and siege ram.

It was a messy fight, the mongol player was clearly better than anyone in our team, micro was on point taking out my bombard's and just overwhealming me.

I had gold to spare (as trade started happening) so I went for heavy camel as turks to counter the light cav and the magudai.

We had pretty much a 3v2 going on, the flank did reboom and had the ocasional trash army but was mostly out of the picture, we won in the end but I feel like it took a long time.

The mongol player was dug in and had a ton of castles up, so I wonder was heavy camel the right call, or should I have spammed hussar and maybe even cav archers?

I always forget that cav archer is an option, after I got initially pushed back I did ditch the HC's for the rest of the game (as there were no spears coming out) but I wonder if It could have been cleaner with macro descisions.

PSA to my friends on the ladder

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 01:52 AM PDT

This one goes out to all my brothers and sisters climbing the ladder. Especially though my people on the lower end of the elo spectrum.

First of all know I love you all.

    Second though...

If you're gonna send 11s and 105s and little hearts... BE SURE and I wanna emphasize that hence the caps. Just be very very sure, you're gonna win that game....

Because man... imagine feeling as stupid as the two people who did that to me on the ladder tonight feel. No one wants to feel like that.

Learn from thier mistakes. Be better aoe 2 people.
