Dodging in ranked is getting out of hand

    Posted: 01 May 2021 05:07 AM PDT

The higher I climb the more you see it happen, people skipping on certain maps.

Yes you can argue the system just needs an overhaul, but seriously, I actually like playing some "unpopular" maps, especially on teamgames.

Being in queue for nearly an hour because there is 1 guy that wants to play only arena or only arabia and will just dodge the match every time is really annoying.

It doesn't make much sense that there is no penalty for doing this, most games will grant you a loss for quiting during the lobby time.

Worse still is people who fail to dodge while everyone else is just playing the game, then after 5 minutes you see someone "resign" while they never joined the match in the first place.

I think there are legit reasons for dodging, but I also think there should be consequences for people abusing the "system"

One could basically keep queuing endlessly without planning to play and just wasting everyone's time.

Maps with lots of cliffs, relative to map size?

Maps with lots of cliffs, relative to map size?

I realized today that Mongolia only generates lots of cliffs on smaller map sizes. If you compare the smaller sizes to bigger sizes, you can see that the proportion of cliffs to the rest of the map decreases the larger the map size is, like there's only a set number of cliffs regardless of map size. Image attached demonstrates this- you get somewhere around 30 cliffs of varying sizes per map, regardless of map size:

    https://preview.redd.it/ub467e60ifw61.jpg?width=302&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=191d1659d4b62f187bdaf048fc7c5282105eecc6

This disappointed me some, I really liked how on small sizes Mongolia had lots of distinct elevation features and more of a feeling of asymmetry and interesting terrain flow which made locations very distinct and memorable, rather than like "Everyone has one island" or "theres one mountain in the middle and otherwise everything around it is samey". Not complaining about those things- that sort of design is very valuable for competitive play and so on, but I just wanted some weird random terrain to spice up casual play especially for ludicrous map sizes.

Are there any maps that generate lots of cliffs even on ludicrous map sizes?

    Teuton scouts are under rated.

    Posted: 01 May 2021 06:19 AM PDT

Teutons are one of the only civs who don't access to light cav, so it might make you want to avoid the making them entirely, at least after feudal. Yes, they are very low hp and don't have a ton of attack, but imp scouts do have all the blacksmith upgrades and you get the extra two melee armour as teutons. Plus they are as fast as teuton get. imo they are the only cheap effective raiding unit you can use as teutons in imp. Knights are to slow and valuable. Got extra food from those cheap farms? Spam scouts into the enemy eco. Teutons are good at grinds, but have a bit of a hard time finishing it off because of their general slowness. Scouts are basically a free way to make up for this.

    AOE2 DE Bug with villagers

It has occurred several times already. If I send 1 or more villagers to build something near by there is a little chance that they will just go to the center and sit there until I reorder them to build.

Op-ed from a random fan: Microsoft is on a slippery slope with Expansion Packs, and needs to take care to preserve the prestige of AoE2.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 02:22 PM PDT

AoE2 is what I consider a 'prestige' title. When you think of AoE2, you think of quality and of its position among the RTS elite.

It's not the kind of game or franchise that I associate with 'cheap cash grabs' , but I'm worried that it's getting close. (I won't get into AoE Online because this post is long enough)

I am all for expansion packs; African Kingdoms? Hell yeah! The Last Khans? Awesome!

However, at what point is new content big enough to justify calling itself an "expansion pack" instead of just being "bonus DLC"? This is a distinction that's going to be different for everybody; I am only stating my opinion here.

Look at The Conquerors, AoE2's first expansion: Five new Civs, Four Campaigns (if you count the Historical battles), as well as new technologies. This is like the benchmark by which other expansions should be compared to.

Now, let's look at one that's more recent, Rise of the Rajas: Four new Civs, Four new Campaigns. Okay, that's pretty similar; we also have a gorgeous new architecture set to boot, new tilesets and environmental art, and the southeast-asian civs even have their own unique identity with exclusive access to battle elephants (just like how the meso civs from The Conquerors have their own unique identity). Nothing's going to match The Conquerors, but Rise of the Rajas still feels like a proper expansion pack to me.

This brings me to Lords of the West. This latest expansion offers only Two new Civs and Three Campaigns, and no new art besides the few unique buildings/units for its two civs.

LotW is the first expansion in AoE2's history that to me, doesn't feel like an expansion pack. Not only is the amount of new content smaller than previous expansions, but the new civs don't even come with a new architecture set. In the past, whether it be the African civs, Southeast Asian civs, or Central Asian civs, there's a certain 'prestige' that a new architecture set adds to an expansion pack. It makes that expansion pack feel more legitimate, carrying on the tradition established in The Conquerors.

Yes, the voice-acted campaigns are very nice, but LotW lacks the extra production value to really feel like an expansion.

It's important to note: I LIKE LotW. I think it's absolutely worth the $15 price (though admittedly nowhere near as good value as other expansions). But does LotW feel like an expansion pack to me? No, I don't think so.

And ultimately, I think that this is why LotW suffered some pushback when it was announced. When an expansion pack like The Conquerors came out, fans don't go: "Oh lame, I have to buy this thing to play with the OP Meso civs". No, an expansion pack should be a big, exciting addition to a beloved game, and I've always felt this way until LotW.

I can excuse LotW this once; but I sincerely hope it's not a precedent. Words/names have power, and if every 'expansion pack' has the lower amount of content that Lords of the West does, then the term 'expansion pack' will lose significance for AoE2 over time. And I'm admittedly a bit worried that Dawn of the Dukes will continue to cheapen the term 'expansion pack', the way that LotW did for me.

This is where I get a bit into conspiracy-theorising, but LotW felt a bit like an experiment to me, as if Microsoft asked: "how small can we get away with making this DLC while branding it as an 'expansion pack'?".

So please, Microsoft, preserve what it means to be an AoE2 Expansion Pack. More-frequent, smaller releases may seem tempting; but I really do believe it'll hurt the brand's reputation as a 'prestige' title in the long run. And I'm sure we all want AoE2 to be in it for the long haul. Again, I need to stress: I still 100% support the release of new content / expansions; I just really believe that those expansion packs need a lot more oomph than LotW had, in order to justify being called Expansion Packs.

    Thank you for reading!

TLDR; Lords of the West may be enjoyable, but it doesn't feel like an expansion pack; it's too small compared to previous expansions, and doesn't have the same level of production value (previous expansions also had new art, tilesets, and architecture sets to really sell their themes and civs). Releasing multiple 'expansions' like LotW will, over time, cheapen the AoE2 brand. It's a slippery slope, and Microsoft needs to be careful in order to ensure that a new Expansion Pack announcement has the significance it should have and isn't 'just DLC'.
