    Recently started playing again!

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 06:31 PM PDT

Hello! I bought the definitive edition recently and I've been wanting to play again. I'm a huge RTS fan and I've played a lot of CoH2, AoE2, SC2, SC1, etc.

However, I haven't touched this since 2013, and I have a couple of questions. How is the community, population wise? How do you fast level cities (I'm being kicked constantly in custom games lol)? Anyone willing to play games with me?

So far it looks pretty dead; I know Age3 isn't the most loved of the AoE franchise, but I'd love to be able to play it regularly.

You resigned in the first 5 mins of the game, what happened?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 12:32 PM PDT

Apart from disconnects and crashes obv, why did you decide to leave and ruin the game for all the others?

Unfortunately I see this happen way too many times in AoE 3. Why would you go through all the struggle, finding the right lobby, waiting for it to fill up and finally starting the game only to immediately resign again?

Just trying to understand people who do this...

Updated Tutorial: How to extract unit portraits PROPERLY

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 09:01 AM PDT

Recently, an update ( I think since the US civ) changed the way the archive files are organized, I am not sure exactly. I still see in the wiki or somewhere else people using the unit portraits in the wrong way (with the white transparent part for player colors). This tutorial explains you what you have to do. It is an updated version of the same tutorial I have published before, but with different software and methods.

    1. Download Resource-Manager. Seems like this software is new (we will use this softwre instead of DragonUnPacker+HyperRipper, because it has the benefit of understanding the filenames of each picture.
    2. In Resource Manager, open the file UIResources1.bar located in Age of Empires III - Definitive Edition\Game\UI
    3. At the bottom of the program, type png in search file. It will filter all files and display only png files.
    4. Sort the file list by size. You will see that the first portrait starts at 1,093,097 bytes (file size).
    5. Select and extract the files that you want. Extract them as PNG in a folder.
    6. If you have selected multiple files, these files are probably going to be extracted in multiple folders and subfolders. You might use the following bat script to move all the files into the first parent folder and remove all sub-folders. It is very useful to display together at once and have a clear view of everything in windows explorer. Don't forget to put the path of your folder containing the pictures into this bat command.

@ECHO OFF SETLOCAL SET parent="PUT THE DIRECTORY PATH OF YOUR FOLDER HERE BETWEEN APOSTROPHES Ex:C:\Users\Admin\Desktop\MyFolder" CD /d %parent% FOR /r %parent% %%d IN (*.*) DO MOVE "%%d" %parent% FOR /f "delims=" %%d IN ('DIR /a:d /s /b ^| SORT /r') DO RD "%%d" ECHO Done. Press any key to terminate script. PAUSE >NUL
    1. Next, once you have your picture files in one folder, download Bulk Image Converter.

    2. Use Bulk Image Converter to convert all your png files to BMP (!). This will remove the transparent part and replace it with the base texture that usually goes on top of the player color ingame. Don't forget to check the box "Delete original files after conversion" in BulkImageConverter.

    3. You may now convert all your bmp files to PNG.

    4. DONE! You now have a folder with every unit portrait of the game -with their NAME! Enjoy.

Help with AOE: War Chiefs campaign anybody?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 10:27 AM PDT

I am currently stuck in I think it's the fifth scenario, the one with two fixed guns and etc... It seems that I can't manage the resources gathering, production, building, combat and guns all in the same time, at least not without neglecting one or more in a devastating way. What can I do better? Thank you!
